Palestinian Food - RARE Zarb BBQ Arabic Cooking in Bethlehem + STREET FOOD in Palestine!
SUPER RARE Palestinian Zarb BBQ in Bethlehem!
MORE INFO:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to a very SPECIAL episode of Chopstick Travel. Today, we will be taking you inside the home of a Palestinian family for a full on ZARB meal in Bethlehem. Zarb is a roast chicken meal, made with spices like sumac, chili and za’atar. The chicken originally was baked underground in the dessert, by the Beduins, but this family re-created a modern version of the oven, and show us the process of how it’s done.
We also take you to eat some delicious Palestinian food all around Bethlehem, while checking out some of the main sites, like the Church of Nativity and Shepherd’s Fields. Who knew Bethlehem had so much to do! One of the top highlights was a visit to Sammie’s shop, for a secret concoction tea and to listen to his singing. Did you know Sammie appeared in Conan O’Brien’s show?
If you want to experience the BEST of Bethlehem or elsewhere in Palestine (West Bank), then get in contact with Peace by Piece Tours, we highly recommend their expertise. Location & price information is not available as it is a part of Peace by Piece organized tours.

There are few cities in the world that can compare to Jerusalem in terms of ancient history and religious significance. It’s one of the most fascinating cities in the world, and it’s a city that I’ve wanted to visit my entire life. Finally, along with my friend David ( and Rafram, we explored Jerusalem to discover the food treasures the city has to offer - and let me tell you, you’ll find some incredibly delicious food in Jerusalem!
We started off the Jerusalem food tour by first walking around East Jerusalem and starting with the best plate of hummus I’ve ever had. We then toured around Old Jerusalem, and enjoyed some incredible Palestinian food kebabs cooked by an incredible man who cooked with serious love and passion. Another highlight in Jerusalem was the mutabak, a thin pastry stuffed with cheese and baked.
After eating our way through Old Jerusalem, we then headed into West Jerusalem and went to lunch at an Israeli Jewish restaurant serving a mix of amazing dishes. The food was home-cooked in style, and absolutely sensation. A few more snacks and sightseeing throughout the afternoon, and that brought us all the way to dinner where David had made reservations to eat at one of the hottest restaurants in Jerusalem, Machneyuda Restaurant. It was quite an experience, and an amazing meal and lively atmosphere to wrap up this ultimate Jerusalem food tour.
Here’s all the food and places included in this Palestinian food and Israeli food tour of Jerusalem:

It was a lot of food in a single day, but it was one of the greatest food and learning days that I’ve ever had in my life. The generosity of the people we connected with, paired with the food, was truly a memorable experience in Jerusalem.
Thank you again to David ( and Rafram for showing me some of the best food in Jerusalem!

Welcome to another episode of Chopstick Travel. Today we take you on the ultimate street food tour through the Holy city of Old Jerusalem, within the city walls only. Old Jerusalem is an ancient area, and is packed with street foods, teas & coffee, fresh produce, historic and religious relics and endless sightseeing opportunities.
We take you to eat some delicious Palestinian food all around the city, starting with the simple Za’atar bread. Next we locate some spiced lamb kebabs, cooked fresh over fire. And to wash down the kebabs, a delicious & cheap hummus! We then find a bizarre yellow sweet, called date bread, as a dessert. After, we head to a famous Palestinian spice shop, where you tell them exactly what you’re going to cook, and they create the perfect spice blend for you. We picked up local spices - za’atar and sumac, as well as a special spice concoction. Next, we take a short break with some street side Arabic coffee, spiced with cardamon. We decide to do some sightseeing to digest some food. Our first sight was a short stop to the Western Wall. Then we visit an ancient sweet shop, over 150 years old for mutabak. We then visit the next sight - the Dome of the Rock, and then the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. To end our insane day of eating street food inside the old city, we pick up a pomegranate/orange juice, freshly pressed, and head to a small shop selling kanefe.
All shops, restaurants and sights are located within the city walls. There aren’t addresses, but using Google Maps, you can type in the name of the shop and it will give you an approximate location. A better option, ask shop owners inside the Old City. They give great directions. Here are the names of the shops/approximate locations:
- Za’atar bread - NEAR DAMASCUS GATE ENTRANCE
- Lamb kebabs - ON SHUK HA-TSORFIM ST. (also near Shaheen Kebab)
- Hummus - ARAFAT HUMMUS
- Date bread - NEXT TO ARAFAT HUMMUS
- Spices - SEA OF HERBS JERUSALEM
- Arabic Coffee - can be found all around the Old City
- Sight #1 - THE WESTERN WALL
- Mutabak - ZALATIMO SWEETS (we had to ask a shop owner for directions)
- Sight #2 - DOME OF THE ROCK
- Sight #3 - CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE
- Pomegranate & Orange Juice - NEAR THE AUSTRIAN HOSPICE
- Kanefe & tea - CONFECTIONERY JAFAR

This is the final video in this series, thank you for watching. You can watch the entire series here:
We met up with my friend David ( and drove over to Nazareth to eat at, what David considered to be the best Palestinian food restaurant - especially famous for his kebabs.
Diana Restaurant - This is a gem of a restaurant in Nazareth. He makes the kebabs by hand, mixing the meat and spices, and chopping and mixing all the ingredients with a giant sword. The Palestinian food was incredible, the kebabs and I especially enjoyed the lamb fillet and stuffed lamb ribs. It’s not a cheap restaurant though - Total price - 650 ILS ($181.95)
Galilee Mill - In Nazareth, we stopped at Galilee Mill, one of the most incredible spice shops.
Liman, Israel - Finally to end the day we drove over to a small town called Liman to eat at Michael Local Bistro, a restaurant that David considers to be the best in Israel. The food was very high quality and made use of very high quality ingredients. Total price - 700 ILS ($195.95)
Again, big thank you to David, go check out his amazing food adventures:

PALESTINIAN FOOD in Jerusalem
We walk in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem in the search of Palestinian food. We stop for falafel, sweet baklava and finally for a whole palestinian dinner where I see how they prepare me a laffa bread filled with meat, hummus, vegetables and many more delicacies.

In this episode, we partnered with Delicious Israel to learn about the origin of the food, the fresh ingredients used and the best places to find them. We started our day with Sabich for breakfast, a very popular street food you can eat almost any time of the day (so healthy!), and then a Turkish dessert, Malebi with Arabic coffee. Then, we enter the Carmel Market to sample some local spices and enjoy two types of hummus. Next, Inbal takes us to a local kitchen to eat Yemini food, a bread that is fried with egg and with hummus and zhug (SPICY!). We then try Syrian cookies, and stopped by a stall making fresh pitas. We end the day with a fresh, street-side falafel. All food featured in this video was paid for in full by us.

During my Palestine trip, I visited a huge bazaar in a historic city called Nablus, which is famous for the sweets and the Turkish bath, hammam.
In Nablus, I was positively overwhelmed by its exotic spice stalls, piles of fresh vegetables, clothing racks, and bustling energy.
