Lithuania (Europe) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Lithuania in Europe.
Lithuania is situated on the Baltic Sea and has a long history, fortified castles and splendid palaces, a country that has many religious buildings and where religious faith has become an art form. Vilnius, the capital, is a city of Baroque mixed with Gothic, Renaissance and Classicism, a melting pot of culture. Its main landmark is Castle Hill with its red-coloured Gediminas Tower that marks the beginning of the city's history. The Boulevard begins in Cathedral Square where, adjoining the cathedral, is a fine white bell tower. The Cathedral’s interior still radiates a Gothic sense of space. The local people are particularly proud of the cathedral’s copy of the Turin Shroud. In the Middle Ages when the Grand Dukes ruled, the ancient capital of Trakei was the political centre of Lithuania’s power. The later built Water Castle is the real landmark of Lithuanian history. Grand Duke Vytautas had the castle extended and from it ruled a vast empire which, for a short time, stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Around forty kilometres northwest of Vilnius lies the archaeological site of Kernave, Lithuania’s ‘Troy’. The exhibits date from the tenth century B.C. until the Early Middle Ages. During the first centuries A.C., large settlements were established in the Pajauta Valley, which were protected by the Castle Mountains. On the edge of the Zemait Highland in the north lies Şiauliai, Lithuania’s fourth largest city, much of which had to be rebuilt after the Second World War and that since the sixteenth century had been an important market and trading city. Sundial Square is the city’s main landmark with its impressive sundial that was created for the city’s seven hundred and fiftieth jubilee in 1986. Full of European history, Lithuania has become a modern day country with magnificent castles, ancient towns, nature and culture and is a destination that is bound to please!

Kernave (Lithuania) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Kernave in Lithuania.
Around forty kilometres northwest of Vilnius lies the archaeological site of Kernavė, Lithuania’s ‘Troy’. During the first centuries A.C., large settlements were established in the Pajauta Valley which were protected by the Castle Mountains. Evidence of a burial culture was found such as the tomb of a horse that was discovered in 1998. Artefacts from the Iron Age, such as axes and spear heads, have been uncovered and bones from different time periods. In 1390, the Crusaders burned down the city yet Kernavė has been a World Heritage Site since 2004. Close to the Archaeological Museum and in front of the Catholic To The Holy Virgin Mary Church, is the reconstruction of an older church. The wooden Saint Nicholas Church was destroyed by fire but the groundwork of the building is depicted by numerous stones. There is also a nineteenth century white stone mausoleum and a wooden chapel. There is evidence that various mounds were created in order to support fortifications. They were called, Castle Mountains. A most powerful system was created that consisted of five imposing castle buildings formed a common defence complex to protect the settlement in the Pajauta Valley. Grand Duke Mindaugas had his fortress built across all five mounds and had it protected with palisade fences and defensive walls. This archaeological, open air museum brings Lithuania’s history to life in an interesting and remarkable way. From here was forged the economic and military power of Lithuania in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Thus the definition, Lithuania’s ‘Troy’ is well deserved. An archaeological excavation site that uncovers the very roots of the Lithuanian State!

15 Basic Things To Know Before Visiting Lithuania

Unfortunately most people around the world don’t know much about Lithuania. In some ways this is a blessing - since the beautiful old towns and city centres of the country are never too busy in the same way as perhaps London, Paris, and Amsterdam. While its nice for residents and the tourists that DO know about Lithuania, I’m sure the country’s tourism organizations would love to change this.

Vilnius (Lithuanian) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Vilnius in Lithuania.
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and a melting pot of different cultures. The city’s main landmark is Castle Hill with its red Gediminas Tower that crowns the steep hill and marks the beginning of the city's history. Within the tower is the Gothic castle of Grand Duke Vytautas which was built of red brick in 1419. The Boulevard begins in Cathedral Square which was where Grand Duke Mindaugas had the city’s first cathedral built behind which was situated his palace. The basilica contains a copy of the Shroud Of Turin. The Saint Johannis Church is part of the university complex. Along with its impressive altar, this modest church is one of the country’s most beautiful examples of baroque design and possesses no less than ten altars. Beyond the five bridges of the Vilnia, the artist Republic of Užupia welcomes with its state symbol of a golden angel with trombone. This old residential neighbourhood almost fell into total disrepair but a number of artists have subsequently settled there and its charming backyards have now been improved by several small art galleries. Vilnius is surrounded by forests and meadows on the banks of the Neris, a European Capital Of Culture full of fine architecture and vibrant spirit!

Trakai (Lithuania) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Trakai in Lithuania,
In the Middle Ages when the Grand Dukes ruled, the ancient capital of Trakai was the political centre of power of Lithuania. Small, colourful traditional wooden buildings line Karaimu Gatve and the descendants of the first Karaer still live there. The gabled buildings face the street and contain three small windows, one for God, one for Vytautas and one for the inhabitants themselves. In 1409, following his third baptism, the church was founded by Duke Vytautas and became a part of the protective system of the Trakaer city. Both its facades and interior decoration contain features of the later Gothic and Baroque construction. The construction of the Water Castle began with the erection of a palace and a deep ditch that contained water from the lake separated the palace from the promontory. At the same time casemates and towers were built and a wall with three towers on each corner surrounded the promontory. The main entrance to the castle was only accessible via a drawbridge and an additional portcullis provided further protection. Within the former treasury are objects that belonged to the Teutonic knights. Indeed, it was Duke Vytautas who made an alliance with the Teutonic Order and thus came to power in 1390. Magnificently crafted jugs, plates and cups of gold, highlight the wealth and power of Lithuania’s royal court. This beautifully preserved castle complex with its unique architecture of stone and wood has a national significance for Lithuania: it is a symbol of the courageous steadfastness of the Lithuanians against the Crusaders!

The ULTIMATE Baltic Road Trip | Itinerary | Lithuania | Latvia | Estonia | Europe Travel

Check out our 2-week Baltic road trip itinerary:

In 2019 Bradley and I went on an epic road trip through the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

We absolutely LOVED it! The great thing about a Baltic road trip is that it's fairly flat, so you can stick the car in cruise control and take in all the beautiful views that surrounded you.

A Baltic road trip adventure is cheap too, as they're some of the cheapest countries in mainland Europe!

The sights are amazing, the people are friendly and the food is delicious.

So if you're thinking of road tripping the Baltic countries, then do NOT hesitate!

Pssst, if you're wondering who Tinggly are, then find out here!

Kuršių nerija (Lithuania) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Kuršių Nerija.
It is a short ferry ride across the Curonian Lagoon, from Klaipeda to Curonian Spit, the most extraordinary landscape in Lithuania. This is a peninsula which stretches in a narrow arch from Klaipeda to Russia’s Kalinigrad, over ninety eight kilometres off the coast. The lagoon side is sheltered, and therefore, calm and covered with reeds. This is where a nature conservation area begins which became a World Natural Heritage Site in the year 2000. Alexander Von Humboldt described this natural phenomenon as one of the strangest and most beautiful coastal regions in Europe. In the northern part there are pine and birch forests, exceptional plants and flowers, and where an elk may suddenly appear. But the ecological balance of the peninsula is fragile, since centuries ago deforestation was carried out on a large scale. Further south the interplay of forest, meadow and sand can also be seen. In particular the island side of the lagoon prevented desertification. Here, the Parnidden Dune is a good example: on one side, forest to the edge of the dune and, on the other, sand to the coast. Spit is ninety eight kilometres long and three hundred and eighty metres wide at its narrowest point. It separates the lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Man almost irreversibly destroyed this paradise by his irresponsible actions and it almost became a desert. However, this natural world has been saved just in time.

Latvia Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Latvia.
Latvia is a small Baltic republic, a country with a strong national identity, situated within the centre of the Baltic States. Throughout the course of history its desire for freedom has always taken it forward. Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Saint Petri Church is one of the oldest in the centre of the city and, at the same time, a main landmark. It is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the development of the city. Close to Riga is Jurmala, today a popular health resort on the Latvian Riviera, with splendid bay-windowed villas, battlements and towers, formerly Baroque and later with a nod at Gothic. Thirty kilometres of beaches with bright erinaceous quartz and a mild climate created a holiday paradise in the nineteenth century. Amid the fertile Zemgale Plain is the magnificent, huge Baroque Jelgava Castle, the largest in Latvia. In 1737 the residence of the then secular ruler of the Duchy Of Kurland was built on the ramparts of an ancient castle of the Livonian Order. Beneath the southeast corner of the castle is the Crypt Of The Dukes, a tomb vault with thirty superbly decorated sarcophagi of tin and wood. The picturesque primordial river valley of Gauja has for centuries attracted travellers from each corner of the world. This Livonian Switzerland not only has the charm of primary nature, but also all the ambience of the Middle Ages. Today’s Latvia is now striking a healthy balance between a market economy, ancient traditions and the burdensome legacy of a turbulent past. Its journey into the European Union has been a success, thanks to courage, strength and faith!

Travel Videos (Subscribe Now) ????

Lithuania is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. Even some travelers focusing their trip on the Baltic countries seem skip Lithuania since Latvia and Estonia are more easily accessible via air travel. This is a huge mistake! Vilnius is a cute, quirky capital that was a delight to experience and explore. Although I could list many, here are 8 reasons to travel to Vilnius, Lithuania:
8 Reasons to Travel to Vilnius, Lithuania
=================================
1. Vilnius has a beautiful historic Old Town filled with baroque architecture.

You could easily spend a day leisurely exploring Vilnius’ charming Old Town, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Europe’s largest baroque capital. Pop into shops, stroll the winding streets and admire the impressive baroque architecture. Don’t forget to saunter around Vilnius University’s picturesque courtyards, admire the gothic architecture of St. Anne’s Church and wander through the impressive Gates of Dawn before you head down Vokiečiu gatvė to settle into a cafe and people watch.

2. You can admire breathtaking views of old and new from above.

You’ll find Gediminas Hill looming over the city. You can climb up the hill starting from the steps behind the cathedral if you’re looking to break a sweat or you can purchase a ticket and take the funicular up. You’ll be treated to sweeping views of both Old Town and Vilnius’ modern day city center once you arrive to the top.

It was a neat experience gazing at the cobblestone streets and historic buildings to my left and skyscrapers and city lights to my right. I’d recommend planning your trip to the hill later in the day so you can catch sunset. Head to SkyBar or the TV Tower for more panoramic city views.

3. Vilnius is super inexpensive.

One of the many reasons I have always loved eastern European countries is because of how affordable they are. Lithuania is very inexpensive by Western standards. I found Vilnius to be the least expensive capital city on my trip through the Baltics – prices were much less than in Riga and considerably cheaper than Tallinn. You can grab a cheap meal for around €5 and a beer for €1 if you’re on a budget, or you can splurge on luxury travel experiences, like a hot air balloon ride, for far less than you will pay in other countries.

4. But, the city also offers luxury.

Vilnius also has you covered if you happen to fancy the finer things in life. Stroll down the posh Aušros Vartų gatve filled with high-end shops, upscale hotels and mouth-watering restaurants. (As an added bonus, the street is also home to several beautiful historic churches). Seeking a “refined” spot to grab a local brew? Try Alaus Biblioteka, a posh library themed bar where your drink options are “cataloged.” (Tip: Move the bookshelf in front of the main bar for access to a “secret” room and sitting area).

5. Vilnius is brimming with history and museums.

Aside from gorgeous architecture, the city also has several interesting museums. The Museum of Genocide Victims is housed in a former KGB Headquarters and is dedicated to the Lithuanians who were imprisoned, deported or murdered from WWII through the 1960s. I’d also recommend visiting the Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum which documents the shocking details of Lithuanian Jewish Life during the Holocaust. The museum is small and the exhibits are simple, but it was an extremely moving experience.

6. Lithuanian food is delicious.

I knew nothing about Lithuanian food before my trip, but now I know it’s delicious! Be sure to try blyneliai (sweet or savory pancakes) and cepelinai (potato dough dumplings filled with cheese, meat or mushrooms).

My favorite Lithuanian specialty was saltibarscai, a cold beetroot soup which closely resembles Pepto-Bismol, but is refreshing and rather addicting. Try Foto Dvaras for a fun and tasty experience, even if the cave-like atmosphere comes off a bit kitschy.

7. Vilnius is quirky and rebellious.

Did you know that there is a self-proclaimed independent state inside Vilnius’ city limits? Just outside Old Town and across the river you’ll find the quirky artist’s quarter of the “Republic of Užupis.” The micro-nation of Užupis has its own constitution, national anthem, a bishop, four “official” flags and will even offer to stamp your passport for you. This curious area is definitely worth the short stroll from Old Town.

After you’ve perused the hippie commune shops and walked the graffiti-lined alleyways, grab a bite at Uzupio Kavine’s giant riverfront patio.

8. Vilnius is a great base to explore Trakai’s fairytale island castle.

You’ll find the village of Trakai just 30 minutes from Vilnius. Trakai is best known for its stunning medieval castle situated on an island surrounded by lakes.

Lithuania is celebrating 100 years of independence. Sort of. While it shook off more than a century of Tsarist rule on February 16, 1918, it was reoccupied at the end of the Second World War and only regained its freedom in 1990. Nevertheless, the country is marking the centenary, as is sure to be hoping the next 100 years is rather less fraught.

It seems an opportune time, therefore, to examine what this Baltic nation has to offer travellers.
1. It’s the dead centre of Europe
Admittedly several nations have laid claim to being bang in the middle of the continent – Belarus and Hungary to name two – but the spot near the village of Purnuškės has the backing of the scientific community. A monument marks the spot, while the nearby Europos Parkas hosts the world’s largest sculpture made of TV sets. What are you waiting for?

2. It’s as cheap as chips
Not convinced yet? Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, regularly ranks as one of the cheapest city breaks in Europe, with a pint likely to cost below €2.50. “Spend time wandering along the wonderfully atmospheric cobbled streets of the largest medieval old town in central and eastern Europe,” says Telegraph Travel's Adrian Bridge. “Take in an architectural heritage that blends elements of baroque, gothic, renaissance and Russian, and join young locals in all-night party mode.” Don't mind if we do.

3. It’s one big film set
The BBC filmed much of its recent War and Peace drama in Lithuania and neighbouring Latvia. “Lithuania has been making films for years,” wrote John Gimlette, who travelled on a War and Peace tour for Telegraph Travel. “Usually it plays the role of Russia, although it has also been Tudor England (Elizabeth I) and even Sherwood Forest (Robin Hood).”

4. This hill of crosses is the stuff of nightmares
Just north of the city of Siauliai, the Hill of Crosses is believed to have come into being after a battle in 1831 at the site. Since, crosses and crucifixes large and small, as well statues of the Virgin Mary and Lithuanian patriots, have been left by Catholic pilgrims. The hill is now home to some 100,000 crosses.

5. Not content with a hill of crosses?
There’s a hill of witches, too. A stone’s throw from the Curonian Spit (more on that later), this outdoor sculpture gallery near Juodkrante features about 80 wooden characters linked to Lithuanian folklore and pagan traditions.

6. Lithuania is mates with Iceland
And everyone loves Iceland. The country was the first to recognise Lithuania as an independent state in 1991. Islandijos Street (Iceland Street) near Vilnius city centre is a testament to a fraternity still held.

7. It boasts tremendous sand dunes
Lithuania shares half of the Curonian Spit, a 61-mile strip of sand dunes that keeps the Curonian from the Baltic Sea. A Unesco World Heritage Site, it is home to the highest moving sand dunes in Europe, with an average height of 35 metres and some stretching to 60 metres. Matthias Lüfkens visited for Telegraph Travel: “Pine trees carpet this slither of a sand dune – a rare natural wonder, preserved in an almost perfect state by the region's former Soviet rulers, who forbade any foreigner to set foot on it.”

8. There are three other World Heritage Sites, too
The other sites protected by Unesco are charming historic centre of Vilnius; the Kernavė Archaeological Site, which boasts a testimony to some 10,000 years of human settlement; and the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of markers linking 10 countries across Europe.

9. It has almighty internet
Believe it or not, the Baltic state enjoys one of the fastest internet upload speeds in the world, owing to having the most fibre-optic broadband capacity in Europe.

10. Vilnius boasts this gorgeous cathedral
The neoclassical church was completed in 1783.

11. Its university is equally impressive
It is one of the oldest such institutions in northern Europe, founded in 1579.

12. It was once the largest country in Europe
Another surprising fact given its modern day size, but Lithuania, as the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, was the largest nation in Europe, taking in parts of present-day Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and Russia.

13. It has monuments to its tumultuous past
Occupied by both Nazis and Soviets in the 20th century, the remarkably family-friendly Grutas Park, near Druskininkai, is the final resting place of an array of USSR-era status and relics removed from around the country after it regained its independence in 1991. There is also an exhibition on life in Lithuania under the Soviet Union.

14. And if you’re into that kind of thing…
You'll love the decommissioned Soviet nuclear missile base at Žemaitija National Park.
