GERMANY: Tecklenburg - medieval town

Tecklenburg is a town in Germany set against a decor of the Middle Ages, located at the foothills of the Teutoburg Forest (Teutoburger Wald).

Tecklenburg retained some of its medieval townscape to date.

Main sites include the ruined castle (now serving as open air theatre during the Summer) and the Stadtkirche (the main, old church) including tombs of the dukes of Tecklenburg and others prominent in the history of the county and city.

The castle was built around 1250. Anna von Tecklenburg-Schwerin made a lot of construction changes. Around 1700 the castle was old and the bricks were used for other buildings in Tecklenburg. Only a ruin was the result.

Today, Tecklenburg is a lovely tourist place, a place to relax and to walk around. The city's center streets represent old European charm. As you walk these streets, you sense becoming part of history - 100's years of lives lived out in these same streets.

1. Schloss Osnabrück
Osnabrück Castle served as the residence of Protestant Prince-Bishop Ernst August I of Osnabrück and his wife, Sophie of the Palatinate. Since 1974, it has housed Osnabrück University’s administration. The castle, its gardens, and statues, including the Lyra Monument, are protected as historic landmarks. In 1662, Ernst August, dissatisfied with the existing Iburg Castle, began building a new baroque-style four-wing castle in 1667, with various architects contributing to the design. The central building (Corps de Logis) included residential and guest rooms, a chapel, and a grand hall. Sophie, inspired by French castles and gardens, was instrumental in designing the castle garden.

2. Rathaus Osnabrück
The Town Hall of Osnabrück was built in the late Gothic style from 1487 to 1512. It is one of Osnabrück's most important buildings and emblems and continues to be used as the city's town hall today. The Treaty of Westphalia was negotiated and signed by the combatants of the Thirty Years’ War at the town halls of Osnabrück and Münster in 1648.

3. St. Marien Osnabrück
St. Marien is an Evangelical Lutheran parish and market church in Osnabrück, considered one of the city’s most significant architectural landmarks. Initially mentioned in 1177, it dates back to an earlier structure from the 10th century. The current Gothic hall church, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, replaced earlier Romanesque structures. WWII bombings damaged the church, prompting archaeological excavations during its post-war reconstruction from 1950, which revealed at least three previous churches.
The first structure was a 10th-century single-nave market church with a defensive design. It was replaced in the 11th century by a larger, single-nave church with a 14-meter tower. The third church, from the 12th century, became a three-nave basilica. In the 13th and 14th centuries, St. Marien was transformed into the Gothic hall church seen today. Positioned centrally in Osnabrück’s market square, it is one of four medieval churches surrounding the city center.

Tecklenburg 10. 06. 2017

Tecklenburg Stadt, Burg

Spring (Easter) in Tecklenburg (HD)

Tecklenburg is a town in the district of Steinfurt, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located at the foothills of the Teutoburg Forest, southwest of Osnabrück. In the 12th century the county of Tecklenburg emerged in the region that is now called the Tecklenburger Land in the western foothills of the Teutoburg Forest. It was annexed by the neighbouring county of Bentheim in 1263, and Tecklenburg still had a count until the 19th century. Even today, some local descendents of the Bentheim / Tecklenburg families are sometimes considered as (former) nobles. Much like many other European (former) nobles, their family can be traced back to Charles the Great (800's) or is linked with the blood lines of old European royal families (e.g. in the case of the Bentheim-Tecklenburg there is a link with the House of Orange - the Dutch royal family).
Tecklenburg retained some of its medieval townscape to date. Main sites include the ruined castle (now serving as open air theatre during the Summer) and the Stadtkirche (the main, old church) including tombs of the dukes of Tecklenburg and others prominent in the history of the county and city.
Today, the city of Tecklenburg (from a perspective of size really not a city but a town) is a lovely tourist place, a place to relax and to walk around or to enjoy a long weekend of doing nothing - beautifully. The city's center streets represent old European charm. As you walk these streets, you sense becoming part of history - 100's years of lives lived out in these same streets.... Farmers, traders, men, women, children, nobles, inn keepers, tradesmen, poor folk, city rulers, local clergy, old folk and young ones.... and yes...now even you.
It is so hard to imagine that this place is so close to bustling, 21st century German urban areas like Munster. Tecklenburg is a place to relax today set against a decor going back to the Middle Ages.
