Nandana Fort in Pind Dadan Khan, Jhelum
In February 2023 the Department of History & Pakistan Studies (University of Gujrat, Pakistan) organized a study trip to Nandana Fort in the district Jhelum under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Kashif Ali.
Nandana Fort in Pind Dadan Khan is an ancient site having a temple, a mosque and remains of (perhaps) a Buddhist stupa.
Nandana Pass had witnessed the marches of Alexander's army back in 326 BCE.
Nandana was the stronghold of Hindu Shahi dynasty when Mahmud Ghaznavi attacked the site a thousand years ago.
Nandana was the place where Abu Rehan Al-biruni calculated the circumstance of Earth.
Nandana mythically is the garden of Indra the prime deity and it's trek beggins from the village Baghawala which was visited by Mughal emperors as well and it was hunting ground of Emperor Jahangir.

It is bounded on the south-east by the Jhelum river, and is traversed in its northern portion by the Salt Range. The hills consist of two roughly parallel ranges about 6 miles apart, with a strip of richly cultivated and fairly level uplands between. The southern slopes of the hills are steep and barren. The rest of the tahsil consists of a belt of alluvial plain, a portion of which is much affected by saline deposits. The population in 1901 was 170,130, compared with 173,071 in 1891. It contains the town of Pind Dadan Khan ( population, 13,770), the headquarters; and 207 villages. The land revenue and cesses in 1903-4 amounted to 2.8 lakhs. KATAS and MALOT are places of considerable archaeological interest, the village of Jalalpur possesses historical importance, and the Mayo mine at Khewra is one of the chief sources of the supply of salt in India. Home Garden Tour in Pind dadan khan Jhelum - Proud Gardener TV
In my native village of Pind Dadan Khan, Jhelum, Punjab, Pakistan, I visited my uncle's home garden. Even though he lives in Islamabad, he travels all the way to manage this beautiful garden. I was amazed to see a wide variety of fruits, seasonal vegetables, and pretty plants he had grown with love and care.
The garden was like a colorful paradise with many fruit trees, such as plum, banana, lemon, pomegranate, fig, and papaya. There were also grapevines, guava trees, mulberry trees, and lychee trees. It felt like a magical place with so much natural beauty.
Among the fruits, the plum tree was a standout, full of juicy plums hanging from its branches. The banana tree swayed gently, and the lemon tree added a splash of bright yellow to the garden. Pomegranates with their ruby-red seeds and figs with their sweet taste were a treat to the eyes and taste buds.
The garden was not just about fruits; it had many delightful flowers too. The rose plants were elegant, and their fragrance filled the air. The garden was alive with the sound of birds and insects, as they enjoyed the blossoms and the sweet nectar.
My uncle's passion for gardening was evident in every corner of the garden. The grapevine and guava tree were thriving, and the papaya tree looked promising with its ripe fruit. His care and attention to detail were apparent in the healthy and vibrant plants.
As the sun set, the garden took on a golden hue, and I felt a sense of peace and gratitude. This visit reminded me of the beauty of nature and the joy of tending to a garden. I left with a heart full of admiration and promised to return to this green oasis soon.

Khewra Salt Mine – Khewra - North Pind Dadan Khan - Jhelum District - Punjab - Pakistan
Khewra Salt Mine
The Khewra Salt Mine (or Mayo Salt Mine) is located in Khewra, north of Pind Dadan Khan, an administrative subdivision of Jhelum District, Punjab Region, Pakistan.
The mine is located in the Salt Range, an outer range of the Himalaya Mountains which rises from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is Pakistan's largest, the world's 2nd largest.
The mine is famous for its production of pink Himalayan salt, and is a major tourist attraction, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year.
Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, but it started trading in the Mughal era.
The salt reserves at Khewra were discovered when Alexander the Great crossed the Jhelum and Mianwali region during his Indian campaign.
The mine was discovered, however, not by Alexander, nor by his allies, but by his army's horses, when they were found licking the stones.
Ailing horses of his army also recovered after licking the rock salt stones. During the Mughal era the salt was traded in various markets, as far away as Central Asia.
The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr. H. Warth, a mining engineer, in 1872 during British rule.
After independence, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over the mine, which still remains the largest source of salt in the country, producing more than 350,000 tons per annum of about 99% pure halite.
Estimates of the reserves of salt in the mine vary from 82 million tons to 600 million tons.

Nandna Fort & Hindu Temple, Pind Daden Khan, Salt range, Pakistan
There is a 1500 years old Nandna Fort and Vishnu temple, at Baghanwala, Pind Dadan khan Pakistan. The word Nandna means ‘Lord Vishnu’s garden’, in Sanskrit. Nandna Fort and temple always had a beautiful fruit garden at its foothill. This is because of the perennial stream of fresh water that originates from the foothills of Salt Range.
Nandana Fort was perched by its builders on top of a natural 1500 feet high mountain that overlooks a cut in the salt range. This cut was the ancient road to Indian plains from Taxila.
Rayhan Al Biruni (973-1050AD), the Muslim researcher, stayed at Nandna somewhere around 1017 AD, for a while, to reconfirm the radius of the earth as measured by the Greek using Astrolabe technique. It is said, Al Biruni’s aligned his scale with a protruding hill, just south of Nandna fort, which is still there. Al Biruni’s readings were off by less than 200 miles.
You’d have to turn drive all the way to Lillah Interchange on Motorway, exit towards Pind Dadan Khan, drive on to Darya Jalap and turn left from the Garibwaal Cement Factory chowk. It’s just a 10 minutes driver from this chowk to Baghanwala village. From Baghanwala you’d have to hike for 30 minutes to the top of Nandna Fort and temple. It takes 3 hours to drive Baghanwala on the motorway. It gets pretty hot in the summers while going up, but you can always chill on the return journey from the natural springs down below.
