Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal - THE HIGH PASS
Annapurna Circuit trek in central Nepal climbs to an altitude of 5,400m through Thorung La pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world, below peaks that rise 6000-8000m in elevation from the Annapurna Range. We attempted to complete the trek in about 15 days starting mid-December of 2013, when the shoulder season promised much smaller crowds but with it a risk of deep snow that early winter can bring to the Pass.

Once done with the Dhaulagiri Trek we continued from Jomsom to Kagbeni to start a 10 days long Upper Mustang Trek. First two days we followed the road - or should I rather say an environmental destruction? - than kept as much away from it as we could.
There was a massive progress on the road construction during the quiet Corona time in Upper Mustang. Original trails were destroyed since no one gave a f***
Once in Lo Manthang having a rest day we took again a motorcycle to see the area arround the border north of Lo-Manthang City.
Foreigners - other than Nepali - are not (!!) allowed closer than 10km to the boarder. We had a superb day even getting invited to a local house.
Than the way back - again we took the alternative route away from the road. It ment to move up every day 1000-1500hm than walk on top of the valley and get down into the villages again. Challange every day.
Last day ended again in empty Muktinath and the Bob Marley Hostel. Last walk to Jomsom and the 20-25min flight to Pokhara. Another rest day and it and slowly my one month in Nepal was over.

It starts with a flight from Pokhara to Jomosom, and from there via Kagbeni and Tsarang to Lo Manthang where we stay for a few days to enjoy the harvest season, monasteries and culture of the old capital.
Then we head west over very remote and high passes into the Upper Dolpo area to explore rarely visited valleys. Over exposed passes and down narrow gorges we finally reach Gemi and follow the trodden trail down to Jomosom.

Upper Mustang Trek
Upper Mustang is found in Nepal's Himalayas, not far from the Tibetan border. When Nepal's royal system first came into place, it was a sovereign state with its own distinct culture, traditions, language, and architecture. Before 1992, the area was off-limits to outsiders, but since then it has grown in popularity as a hiking and tourist destination. The Tiji Festival, the historic walled city of Lo Manthang, and the breathtaking vistas of the Mustang Valley, including the arid, desert-like terrain that contrasts with snow-capped peaks, are all open to visitors.
This area is a restricted trekking region in Nepal. We need special permits with a license-holder trekking guide for the trip. Nowadays we can do a jeep tour as well as a trek on walking.

Upper mustang is famous as hidden kingdom of Nepal - they have their own king and this is kind of interesting fact of Upper mustang region.

Upper mustang trekking has few options of starting the trek; either you can starts with flight to Jomsom or you have option to drive from Kathmandu to Jomsom. Also you can mix both driving and flying mode of transportation. If you take the flight or drive; both of the journey will have great mountain view and scattered villages of Nepal in distance looks pretty. Flying above the clouds near the mountains is nice experience and saves time instead of taking jeep or bus to Jomsom. For your information the small plane you take to fly to pokhara and from phokara to jomsom has less thrill but more beauty. Unlikely to flight to Lukla, flight to jomsom from Pokhara is by the side of the mountains and over the high hills, which make the flight awesome.
On arrival at the airport of Jomsom you can drive to Kagbeni to start your trek in upper mustang region or do a day trekking from Jomsom to Kagbeni village.
However jeep goes all the way to upper mustang, as government of Nepal is opening road to China via Korolla boarder. Korolla boarder is above the last village of upper mustang village known as Lomantahng. But you must drive with 4 wheeler Jeep. The road after Jomsom is completley off road so the jeep tour could also be an option in a luxury travel.
kagbeni village is gateway to upper mustang. Above this village the upper region of mustang is famous as upper mustang region of Nepal - also known as hidden kingdom of Nepal.Upper mustang has different culture and this is a special area of rain shadow zone in Nepal. The monastery in the region are more architectural. Upper mustang region has Nepal's old Buddhism practice as these people has their own king. The king of upper mustang is not ruling but the people here respects their king.
Upper mustang has different landscape than other part of Nepal. The view from the hill top near syangboche is far and wide. We can see the contrasting view of mountains and the dry landscape of rain shadow zone - upper mustang. If you are trekking in monsoon, the region does not get rain but the clouds on the sky might make snow capped mountains invisible in several moments.
Upper mustang region are from Dhaulagiri range and part of Tibetan mountains. The cultural and traditional importance of local chhorten on the trekking trail are attractive and match the existence with the landscape of upper mustang. We believe that, spinning the Buddhist prayer wheel means purifying our soul. As many times as these prayer wheels spins it equals that many chanting of mantra ohm manne padhme Hum. The mantra of Ohm manhe Padhme hum is written on the side of the wheel.
