A visa is required by any foreigner whose country is not member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Your visa is valid for a maximum stay of three months (90 days). It may be extended, but this must be arranged in the country by contacting the General Office of the National Police in Ouagadougou. The Embassy does not issue a long-stay visa.

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa around 274,200 square kilometres (105,900 sq mi) in size. It is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north; Niger to the east; Benin to the southeast; Togo and Ghana to the south; and Ivory Coast to the southwest. Its capital is Ouagadougou. As of 2014, its population is estimated at just over 17.3 million.

Formerly called the Republic of Upper Volta, the country was renamed Burkina Faso on 4 August 1984 by then-President Thomas Sankara. Residents of Burkina Faso are known as Burkinabè. French is an official language of government and business.

Prior to the conquest of what is now Burkina Faso by the French and other colonial powers during the late 19th century the country was ruled by various ethnic groups including the Mossi kingdoms. After gaining independence from France in 1960, the country underwent many governmental changes. Today it is a semi-presidential republic. Blaise Compaoré was the most recent president and ruled the country from 1987until he was ousted from power by the popular youth upheaval of 31 October 2014.

The northwestern part of today's Burkina Faso was populated by hunter-gatherers between 14,000 and 5000 BC. Their tools, including scrapers, chisels and arrowheads, were discovered in 1973 through archeological excavations. Agricultural settlements were established between 3600 and 2600 BC. The Bura culture was an Iron-Age civilization centered in the southwest portion of modern-day Niger and in the southeast part of contemporary Burkina Faso. Iron industry, in both smelting and forging for tools and weapons, had developed in Sub-Saharan Africa by 1200 BC.

Historians debate the exact dates when Burkina Faso's many ethnic groups arrived in the country. The Proto-Mossi arrived in the far eastern part of what is today Burkina Faso sometime between AD 700 and the 11th century, the Samo arrived around the 1400s, the Dogon lived in Burkina Faso's north and northwest regions until sometime in the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries and many of the other diverse ethnic groups which currently make up the country's population arrived in the region during this time.

During the Middle Ages the Mossi established several separate kingdoms including the kingdoms of Tenkodogo, Yatenga, Gourma, Zandoma, and Ouagadougou. Sometime between 1328 and 1338 Mossi warriors raided Timbuktu but the Mossi were defeated by Sonni Ali of Songhai at the Battle of Kobi in Mali in 1483.

During the early 16th century the Songhai conducted many slave raids into what is today Burkina Faso. During the 18th Century the Gwiriko Empire was established at Bobo Dioulasso and ethnic groups such as the Dyan, Lobi, and Birifor settled along the Black Volta.

The Karifuelga Waterfalls, Burkina Faso

Another awesome day here in Burkina Faso, I rode out to a place called the Karifuelga waterfalls just outside of the town of Banfora. All over Burkina Faso the tourism infrastructure has been better than anywhere I've seen of yet in west Africa. Although I'm sure when I get to Ghana it will trump this place as well. Anyways, the waterfalls are only about a 20-30 minute drive from town and are really cool. You're not going to find Niagara Falls here, but the Karifuelga waterfalls are still really beautiful, and you'll have them all to yourself!

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

What is supposed to be a nice tour through the various museums in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso turns into a bit of a dud. The national museum is closed and the music museum is down for renovations. However, Ouagadougou is a nice place to just wander around even if it means not visiting any museums or doing normal touristy things. One of the things I take in on this day is the beautiful Grande Mosque in Ouagadougou which is absolutely brilliant. Next to the mosque, there are plenty of shops, vendors and heaps of activity. In general, Ouagadougou is about as comfortable as any capital city in west Africa.

10 Best Destinations to Visit in Djibouti

Though it occupies a tiny corner in Northern Africa, Djibouti has copious amounts of beauty and sites that you really can’t believe unless you’ve seen them for yourself. Few places have such a variety of landscapes – like volcanoes, sinking plains, limestone chimneys with steam coming from the top, salt lakes, grand canyons, and gorgeous plateaus.
For those that love outdoor adventure, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy here. Enjoy snorkelling with the sharks, diving, kite surfing, and hiking. The country isn’t overly developed outside of the capital so spending time here makes for the perfect eco-travel experience as you get a peek of ancient nomadic life.

Getting to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

In this very short episode I head from the beautiful Parc National Deux Bales to the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou. The trip is fairly uneventful which means that most of the footage is from the drive. After arriving in Ouagadougou I really just take a day to chill out. Since being in Africa, I really haven't taken as much time as I needed to just relax, watch movies, and do nothing work related. While it seems like I'm always messing around, I usually spend about 6 hours a day on my computer working, and I rarely take a day off.
Thus, Ouagadougou will be my first full day off in a long time in Africa.
Anyways, Burkina Faso has been awesome so far. I really liked Bobo-Dioulasso so I'm hoping Ouagadougou is also really cool. This is one of my last stops in Burkina Faso before heading southbound and out of the country.

Banfora Is One Of The Best Places in Burkina Faso

Banfora is a city in south western Burkina Faso with a population of 93,750 people. It is the capital of the Comoe province. The city lies 85 kilometers south-west of Bobo-Dioulasso, on the Abidjan – Ouagadougou Railway.
Banfora is a sleepy town in one of the most beautiful areas in Burkina Faso. It has delightful accommodation and eating options and therefore makes an ideal base for exploring the lush surrounding countryside. The town itself has a lively Sunday market, with plenty of goods from nearby Côte d'Ivoire.
The town of Banfora is easily Burkina Faso’s biggest tourism center, and there is good reason why. While the town of Banfora itself is quite pleasant, it is the surrounding region that is full of worthy tourism gems. The best part is that all of the places are easy to visit and hassle-free. From waterfalls, to hippos, to the beautiful Sindou Peaks, there’s enough excitement around Banfora to keep you in the area for at the very least a couple days. This town has all the makings of a backpacker’s paradise, and I have to think that if it manages to cling somewhat to what it is now, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a much larger tourism destination than it already is.
