23 Things To Do In Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam

When I was in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), along with eating as much Vietnamese food as I could, one of my goals was to film a travel video about some of the best things to do in Saigon. After putting together a complete list, it turned out to be 23, and I hope this list of attractions will help and inspire you to visit Vietnam’s largest and most exciting city.

1. Binh Tay Market - Binh Tay Market is one of the largest wholesale distribution markets, and a perfect place to go if you’re looking to go shopping in Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Thien Hau Temple (Pagoda) - Located in Chinatown, in District 5, the temple is dedicated to Thien Hau and I really loved the sculptures and the elaborate design of the temple.
3. Museum of Ho Chi Minh City - This museum offers a glimpse into the history and development of the city and Vietnam.
4. Bitexco Financial Tower - This is the tallest building in Saigon, and you can either go to the Skydeck or a cafe at the top for a view of the city.
5. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) - Probably one of the most well known tourism things to do in Saigon is to visit the Independence Palace, the the former home of the president of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
6. Saigon Cathedral of Notre Dame - With the French influence in Vietnam, the Notre Dame cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church. Attend a service or just visit.
7. Central Post Office - Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is an attraction mainly for its design and architecture. It’s a beautiful building.
8. War Remnants Museum - Although this is not one of the happiest attractions in Saigon, it’s a place to remember and honor the horrible events that are a result of a war.
9. Opera House - Right in Dong Khoi area, and there are still opera shows available.
10. Dong Khoi Street - This is the height of high end shopping in Saigon.
11. Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - The zoo itself is not too great, but the beauty of the Saigon zoo is the botanical gardens, and the lush gardens, and taking a break from the city.
12. FITO Museum (Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) - I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese medicine private museum - very interactive and educational.
13. San Art Laboratory – If you love modern art, the San Art Laboratory is a great place to see and visit in Saigon.
14. Turtle Lake at Night - If you’re looking for some things to do at night in Saigon, head to Turtle Lake to chill out, relax, hang out with friends, and eat snacks.
15. Ben Thanh Market - One of the most famous things to do in Saigon District 1 is visit the Ben Thanh Market, one of the major central landmarks of the city.
16. Phu My Hung and Starlight Bridge - Located outside of central Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My Hung is a modern development, and a great place to walk around.
17. Water Puppet Show - Though originally from the north of Vietnam, water puppet shows are popular also in Saigon. I went to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet theater.
18. Museum of Vietnamese History - Probably one of the most extensive and important museum showing the history of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
19. Rooftop Bar - Seeing Saigon from above offers a great perspective.
20. Fine Arts Museum - This was my favorite of all the museums in Saigon. The museum is housed in a well preserved building, and the art is amazing - located right in District 1 across the roundabout from Ben Thanh Market.
21. Jade Emperor Pagoda - Dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the pagoda has a real ancient feel to it, and it’s worth seeing when you visit.
22. Local Wet Market - One of my favorite things to do is visit a local fresh wet market, which you’ll find all over the city. The ingredients, food, and culture, all stand out at fresh markets.
23. Vietnamese Street Food - By my ultimate favorite activity in Saigon is eating street food, and there are an abundance of delicious Vietnamese street foods to sample.

Thank you for watching this video about the top 23 things to do in Saigon, Vietnam. I hope it has given you some great ideas to help you plan your visit.

5 Things To Know Before You Travel In Vietnam

Traveling in Vietnam is an absolutely amazing experience. The people, food and culture is wonderful. Here are 5 things you need to know before traveling in Vietnam!

1) You will see more motorcycles in one place than you have ever seen in your entire life. Literally there are thousands of them. It's the easiest form of transportation in Ho Chi Minh City (formally Saigon). As a result, you'll see a lot of people wearing masks to protect their faces from the exhaust. In addition people will pack as much on a single motorcycles as possible, including families of 4 with their stuff. Because of all the traffic in the city, it's also very, very difficult to cross the street as there really aren't any traffic laws (that are enforced at least). So to cross the street you've just got to look for an opening and go, but be VERY careful, and never run just walk, they'll move around you.

2) There is FANTASTIC food. There are sanitation issues with water so I'd be careful not to eat anything that isn't boiled or cooked very well just to be on the safe side and be sure to eat some Pho.

3) Vietnam is still a developing country and as a result people are more desperate to make money…so be careful with your stuff i.e money, wallet, camera. If it's left out it will magically disappear. If it's in your pocket it may magically disappear. Pick-pocketing is a real thing and at times they work in groups so make sure everything is not only away, but in a zipped pocket or a pocket that will take you some time to get something out.

4) Shopping! Go shopping, things are very, very cheap. 21,200 dong = 1 USD. Make sure you bargain and never take your money out until a set price as been decided, otherwise the price just might go up, and don't lie about not having the money because when you pull out your money they'll notice you had more, just be honest and say you don't want to pay that much for something. Your can also get your nails done, get a massage or even get a custom made suit. A 6ft guy got a custom made suit, with nice material for $220 USD. It's insane. Just don't take advantage of others and make sure no one is taking advantage of you.

5) You'll learn a lot more about the Vietnam War (The War of Vietnam as they call it). If you're an American the sentiment may feel anti-American in some places like the Cu Chi Tunnels as well as the War Remnants Museum. This may make you feel uncomfortable (if you're an American) but it's their perspective. Personally I think there is value in learning as much about a topic as possible. However everyone was very open and kind and the overall sentiment was leaving the past in the past and working towards a better and brighter future.

Side note: What I don't mention in the video is that there are also a lot of French people because the Vietnamese were under the control of the French for about 100 years and there is a lot of influence in their architecture. I was referred to as Madame a lot which showcases the continued strong french influence.

If Ho Chi Minh City is the cosmopolitan hub of Vietnam, then Hanoi is center of tradition and culture. While the city is sprawling, many parts retain its old city feel.

I started the day strolling through the Old Quarter, the tourist center of the city where many restaurant, shops, and bars can be found. I stopped by Ca Phe Pho Co, a wonderful cafe with a view of Hoan Kiem Lake, that serves egg milk cofffee. Then, I made a pass around the lake, stopping by the Temple of the Jade Mountain and learning a little bit about local ancient folklore. From there, I headed to lunch at the Hanoi Social Club, a cafe retreat that serves a delicious Western menu. Next I made my way to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, though I could get into the building because it's closed in the afternoons. And then it was just a short stretch to the stellar West Lake, where many people go for outdoor recreation and socializing. In the middle of the Lake is Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest temple in Hanoi. Finally, I ended the day with a blind massage and a delicious bowl of bun bo nam bo! I'd say it was a pretty good day!
