I Snuck into Britain's Most SACRED SITE

Blick Mead is, according to our best experts, the genesis of the Stonehenge ritual landscape. I emailed the old folks home at Amesbury Abbey, politely asking to visit the site but they never got back to me. So after a nice Italian dinner and a bottle of wine, I suddenly had the courage to go and see Blick Mead for myself.

Inside the small town of Sherborne on Travel with Kate

Come to for more.
Or follow me at

Like many, I’ve harbored the dream of experiencing the English countryside for years. In my mind were images of rolling green hills dotted with quaint villages and Downton-Abbey-style estates. So on my last trip to London, I decided to get out into the English countryside to finally see it for myself. And you know what? It was not far from my imagination.

The region I visited is called Dorset. And please note, I misspoke in the video it is SOUTHWEST of London!!

And Sherborne, one of the many small towns there, is known for having a complex history dating back to Roman times with an impressive array of architectural wonders. And I’d love to come back to explore more of this place, preferably not in the dead of winter!

There is more to see in Sherborne that didn’t make it into my video. Most notable is the Sherborne Castle, Sherborne Lake, and the Sherborne School. These are all beautiful sites to see. Bring your walking shoes!

It really could not have been easier to get to Dorset from London. For Sherborne, jump on a South West Train from Waterloo Station to Sherborne. The train stop is right in town letting you off not far from the abbey. This makes an easy escape for a daytrip or a long weekend.

The antique shop I visited is called, Robin Wheatley Antiques. And that was Robin himself who so kindly let me throw a camera in his face. Also, the restaurant, The Green is easy to locate right in the middle of town.

I have to thank Visit Britain for facilitating my getaway into the countryside.

NORTH AND SOUTH WHEATLEY: Bassetlaw Parish #18 of 66

Bassetlaw has been a district that's been a part of my life for a long time. I attended school in Gainsborough, which is in the Lincolnshire district of West Lindsey, but situated right on the Bassetlaw border - The River Trent. Because of that fact, a lot of my school friends came from the
district, and as such, the closer I get to Gainsborough on this mad mission of mine, the more familiar I am with the villages in question. Today's parish is certainly one of the ones that I know very well.

On a ridge of land that dips down down a hill and you drive through it, you'll find two small villages that are now amalgamated as one singular parish after joining forces in 2014 from the original two parishes they once were, and together with Norton and Cuckney, these two reduced Bassetlaw from 68 parishes to 66. The joint council makes a lot of sense. For starters, the two villages are clearly separated by the beck that runs through the middle of them, but you can walk over it quite easily in many places - it's not like it's a major river.

The two villages have always been linked throughout history anyway. Both of them relied on each other for labourers when it came to the Hiring Fair - an annual event that took place on the village green to make sure farmers in this part of the world had enough labour to tend to the land over the winter.

There used to be two churches here, only one now remains active, because the other one is now in ruins, but is certainly an attraction now that it's been restored and turned into a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It even features on one of the village signs! There are plenty of old buildings in and around the parish here - take the Old Hall with it's Cartwright family crest, the Wesleyan Chapel, and the old bakehouse on Top Street.

This one was always going to end in the cemetery, for reasons that will become apparent. This is the beautiful parish of NORTH AND SOUTH WHEATLEY.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the district of Bassetlaw. There are 66. Here's the EIGHTEENTH one - North and South Wheatley.

COSSALL: Broxtowe Parish #1 of 10

BROXTOWE PARISH #1: COSSALL

Welcome back to Nottinghamshire everyone. Our first look at the Borough of Broxtowe comes in the form of Cossall, a village located right on the border with Erewash about 1 mile east of Ilkeston. This is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Cotshale. A pretty hilltop village, its surrounding valley is drained by the River Erewash and historically much of it would have been fenland.

There are several notable historical figures associated with Cossall including John Shaw, Richard Waplington and Thomas Wheatley – three men who fought at the battle of Waterloo. Cossall was also the village that author D H Lawrence used as the background for his 1915 novel “The Rainbow”. In real life, this was the actual the home of Louie Burrows to whom Lawrence was engaged for a time.

Broxtowe was once a centre of heavy industry and although Cossall is seemingly quiet now, it was definitely a major part of that history. Coal mining was an important part of the local economy and the village once played host to Cossall Colliery, sunk in the late 1870s. Serving the colliery was a railway line, but before that came along, the Nottingham Canal passes through the village. Its main purpose was to transport coal from the Erewash valley into Nottingham, and although its been disused since 1936, its remains are still clearly visible.

Let’s see if we can find them, as we take on the first of the 10 parishes in Broxtowe

Stonehenge tour

It was filmed in Summer 2018, finally i manage to edit this video.

Don't forget that the closing time is different from the last admission inside.

Wikipedia:
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, two miles (3 km) west of Amesbury. It consists of a ring of standing stones, each around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide, and weighing around 25 tons. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred tumuli (burial mounds).[1]

Archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the first bluestones were raised between 2400 and 2200 BC,[2] although they may have been at the site as early as 3000 BC.[3][4][5]

One of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom, Stonehenge is regarded as a British cultural icon.[6] It has been a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument since 1882, when legislation to protect historic monuments was first successfully introduced in Britain. The site and its surroundings were added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage; the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.
