Long Island USA

Long Island is an island in the southeast of the U.S. state of New York, just east of Manhattan. Stretching northeast into the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island contains four counties, two of which are boroughs of New York City (Queens and Brooklyn), and two of which are mainly suburban (Nassau and Suffolk). The term Long Island often refers only to Nassau and Suffolk counties in order to differentiate them from New York City, though all four counties are on the island and part of the New York metropolitan area

Places to see in ( Rochester - USA )

Places to see in ( Rochester - USA )

Rochester is a city on Lake Ontario, in New York State. Old industrial buildings cluster near the Genesee River’s High Falls. A vast collection of toys and dolls forms the core of the Strong National Museum of Play. The George Eastman Museum, on the early-1900s estate of the Kodak founder, has photography exhibits, film archives and gardens. Rochester Museum & Science Center has hands-on displays and a planetarium.

Big-city culture and small-city charm combine in Rochester, a mid-sized city on the shores of Lake Ontario. The birthplace of amateur photography, Rochester has long been known as Kodak Town, but its fame was established well before George Eastman came on the scene. Today, its historical treasures complement modern family-friendly attractions that rival those found in much larger communities.

In Rochester, you can find the only museum in the world dedicated to play; award-winning music, dance, and acting ensembles; a dense festival calendar covering nearly every weekend of the year; minor-league sports of the highest caliber; and a trio of majestic waterfalls right in the middle of the city. The gateway to the scenic and culinary delights of New York's Finger Lakes region, Rochester is the perfect place to begin your exploration of Western New York.

Rochester, known as The Flower City and The World's Image Center, is the third-largest city in the state of New York, after New York City and Buffalo. Lake Ontario lies to its north, with the Genesee River flowing northward through the city and over a set of three waterfalls. The historic Erie Canal also runs along the city's borders.

Rochester isn't the most popular place for sightseeing, although the Genesee River gorge and its three waterfalls are certainly worth a trip. For nature lovers, the most scenic of the city's parks is probably Highland Park, although Genesee Valley Park has more recreation options.

Rochester does have a good number of cultural attractions, though, especially for a city of its size. The most prominent of these is the Strong National Museum of Play, absolutely a can't-miss attraction if you have young kids with you. History buffs will want to stop by the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, a mecca for students of the women's rights movement. And fans of photography will be awe-struck by the collections at the George Eastman House.

Rochester is a city of small neighborhoods. Most center on one or two main streets and are no more than 5 to 10 blocks in length. The East End, High Falls and Corn Hill are all considered downtown, though each is at a different end. Most of the rest of the popular neighborhoods are on the southeast side. Neighborhood of the Arts, East Ave, Park Ave, and Monroe Village are fairly well connected to each other, but are separated from Swillburg and South Wedge on the other side of route 490. The Public Market is near Neighborhood of the Arts, but East Main still needs a lot of work to connect the two. Charlotte is northwest about a fifteen minute drive from center city.

The flagship festival is, of course, the Lilac Festival, which has been drawing visitors from out of town to Highland Park for over a century. Newer, but no less popular, is the Rochester International Jazz Festival, which has quickly grown into one of the world's top music festivals. Less well-known outside of Rochester is the Park Ave Fest, but it epitomizes the local festival scene and shouldn't be missed if you're in town that weekend.

( Rochester - USA ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Rochester . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Rochester - USA

Fair Harbor Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour to Atlantic Ocean ???? from Great South Bay New York USA

Fair Harbor Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour to Atlantic Ocean ???? from Great South Bay New York USA ????????

The gorgeous harbor at the center of town is where residents gather for “Sixish” on the dock at sunset, enjoy a top notch dinner at Le Dock, grocery shop at Pioneer Market and cool off with an ice cream cone at Unfreindly’s. The bay front swim area and playground are always filled with happy noise and sandy kids.

A “Barefoot Community”, Fair Harbor is a laid back, informal, bustling community. The architecture is as varied as its residents, from humble 1940’s cottages to spacious modern homes. Many of New York’s professionals flock to this lovely, lively town. Whether with children or single, the residents are here for relaxation and fun.

The magnificent harbor view from the dock is the best on the island. Everyone gathers here in the evening for “Sixish” to toast the setting sun. Kids sell their wares while adults mingle and share a glass of wine. Fair Harbor is the perfect town for single professionals to meet and for families with kids who all like to run free.

It is easy to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle here. The lifeguarded bay beach is a gathering place for parents to relax and chat while the kids swim out to the raft or climb in the newly renovated playground.

Unfriendly’s ice cream store is nearby for refreshments when the going gets tough.

The Lifeguard-patrolled ocean beach is wide, sandy and clean. A pair of shoes is rarely spotted in this town.

The center of town is on the bay front with the Pioneer gourmet market, Unfriendly’s ice cream stand, Corliss General store, the Loading Dock liquor store, post office, and fire house. Events are held frequently at the fire house.

Le Dock restaurant on the bay front has a spectacular view and fine dining. Be sure to make reservations well ahead of time.

The first-rate volunteer fire department services Fair Harbor, Dunewood and Lonelyville, its close neighbors.

Although there are almost 400 homes, it is a closely knit community, with a strong and active membership in the Fair Harbor Community Association. They oversee the town services, including choosing the doctor, lifeguards, and maintaining the marina.

They sponsor the Annual Pine Walk Crafts Fair on the dock and bay front 4th of July weekend, which has grown into a major showcase for local artists.

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season.

Hurricane Sandy was referred to as “Superstore Sandy because it had lost some of the traits needed to call it a hurricane. Sandy developed as an ordinary hurricane in the Caribbean, but as it moved up the East Coast and encountered cooler air and water, it began to loose its tropical characteristics. Hurricane Sandy was no longer a hurricane when it made land fall on Fire Island which is why it is also called Superstorm Sandy. The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.

Life In a Floating Slum in Africa - Makoko

The capital of Nigeria, Lagos, is home to a remarkable yet starkly contrasting community known as Makoko - a floating slum that vividly embodies both the resilience of the human spirit and the dire consequences of urban poverty. Beneath the surface of Makoko's waterborne vibrancy lies a harsher truth: the waters, a vital life source, are tainted with sewage and pollution. This environmental crisis is a daily battle for the residents, who face the constant threat of waterborne diseases. The lack of adequate sanitation facilities means that much of the waste and sewage from the densely populated settlement ends up directly in the lagoon, compounding the challenges of maintaining a healthy living environment. Poverty in Makoko is pervasive and profound. Yet amidst these hardships, the spirit of Makoko endures, presenting a deep and complex life narrative in one of Africa's most dynamic urban landscapes. Let us journey to Makoko, and explore how people live in the largest floating slum in the world.

Point o' Woods Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour from the Great South Bay New York USA 2021 4K video

Point O' Woods is a hamlet that consists of a private vacation retreat on Fire Island, New York, in Suffolk County. Although it resembles a village or small town, with services such as a ferry port, a general store, church and fire department, the private community is open exclusively to members and their guests, who are the only persons allowed in through the hamlet's gate, or allowed to use the private ferry that runs to Point O' Woods from Bay Shore on Long Island.

Point O Woods feels like another century, and residents here guard their privacy. This stunning community borders Ocean Bay Park on the west and a stretch of open National Seashore to the east. Ferries leave from Bay Shore

AMAZING HISTORY!!!

#newmexico #oldwest #history #fulltimervliving

Hello there, folks! Today, I'm excited to take you on a journey through the rich history of Fort Selden. This United States Army post used to stand right where Radium Springs, New Mexico, is today. The story of Fort Selden is a real adventure. It all began as a campground along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Believe it or not, it even served as a Confederate Army camp back in 1861. Fast forward to 1865, and the U.S. Army took control, establishing Fort Selden with the mission of protecting westward settlers from Native American raids. But, as time went by and the American Civil War ended, the fort started falling apart and, in the end, was abandoned in 1891. The decision to expand Fort Bliss and the lack of funds for repairs were major factors in its eventual abandonment.

DRIVING BY SELDEN, NY, RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX , 4K/60. WINTER 2021.

History
Early settlement
The farmers who first moved to what is now Selden in the mid-18th century referred to the area as Westfield (or sometimes as Westfields). One of the better known early residents was Captain Daniel Roe (1740–1820), who fought in the French and Indian War and served as a captain in the Revolutionary War,[2] and for whom Captain Daniel Roe Highway is named. Roe built a house in Selden along Middle Country Road before the Revolutionary War.[3] Roe is buried in a small family cemetery south of Middle Country Road behind the Old Westfield shopping center.[4][5]

From The Diary of Captain Daniel Roe, 1806–08 (1904), caption reads: School house near home of Capt. Daniel Roe. Near the tree, at the right, tradition says the Tory Captain Richard Miller fell from his horse in 1776.
Roe sided with the Patriots in the lead-up to the Revolutionary War. In the fall of 1776, Roe was assigned to lead a raid against the Tory and Hessian detachment near Selden led by his cousin Richard Miller. Miller was a wanted man, and Roe himself had pledged 10 pounds of the bounty offered for Miller's capture. When Miller rode right by Roe's house in uniform, he was confronted by Roe's men and ordered to dismount. Instead, Miller fired his pistol and turned to flee, whereupon he was shot by the militiamen. Miller was then carried into Roe's house, where he died.[6][7]

Nineteenth-century farm community
A school district for the Westfield area was first created in 1815, carved out of the districts for New Village (now Centereach) and Coram. Originally named District 25, it was renumbered as District 12 in 1842,[8] which it remained until the formation of the Middle Country Central School District in 1957.

When a post office was opened in 1852, Westfield had already been taken as a name by a community upstate. Upstate attorney (and later judge) Henry Selden promised to do something handsome if the community named itself after him. The name was adopted, though it is usually said to be unknown whether he ever followed through on his promise,[9] and probably did not.[10] While some sources report that the attorney had no known connection to the community, one newspaper reported in 1858 that Selden and attorney Edward Boyle (the namesake for Boyle Road) acquired a large tract of land in the hamlet shortly before the post office opened, and started to develop it.

As of 1885, Selden was home to 88 residents and a Presbyterian church (built in 1857), and noted for producing melons and early garden vegetables from its farms.[10][12][13] Around 1897, the popular cross-island Bicycle Path was completed and ran through Selden. A popular stop along the path, Wheelmen's Rest, was in Selden and run by Albert Norton.[14]

Twentieth century and growth

The Selden home of Daniel Roe, From The Diary of Captain Daniel Roe, 1806–08 (1904)
In 1916, the Suffolk County Tuberculosis Sanatorium opened on land then considered to be part of Holtsville. The location, including some of its original buildings, became in 1961 the main (Ammerman) campus of Suffolk County Community College, which today has an enrollment of over 11,000 students.[17]

From 1919 to 1959, Telescope Hill on the south side of Selden was the location of a fire lookout tower. During World War II, a German U-boat spotted from Telescope Hill was later captured[18] but not identified.

In 1935, a new public school building was built near the same location as the prior school building, near the intersection of Bicycle Path and Middle Country Road. That building was renovated in the 1980s and became a branch of the Middle Country Public Library.[14][19]

The main thoroughfare, Middle Country Road, was paved from Smithtown and through Selden to Coram around 1927-8. The rural nature of Selden soon began to change, when in 1931 (when it had around 131 residents [19]), real estate agents began marketing small lots to New York City residents as retreats from urban living, in a development called Nature's Gardens.[9] This was located on the south side of Middle Country Road and Evergreen Drive. Suburban development increased in earnest in the early 1950s, and by the early 1970s Selden had become a primarily suburban community.

In 1972, the first Westfield Shopping Center opened at the intersection of Middle Country and Blue Point roads, with a Hills Supermarkets location.[21]
