10 Best place to visit in Saltburn-by-the-Sea United Kingdom

Saltburn-by-the-sea, UK

Note: This video was taken before the 2nd and 3rd UK's national lockdowns.

Saltburn-by-the-sea is a seaside town in North Yorkshire which was developed into its current form during the mid to late 19th Century when Henry Pease, of the local Pease family of Darlington, had a vision of a town rising out of the cliff while he was walking along the coastal path to Marske. The Pease family agreed to develop Henry’s vision and purchased some land from the Earl of Zetland in 1860.

Of course, a seaside town needs a sandy beach to walk along and Saltburn by the sea is no exception. A mix of sand and shingle and backed by a promenade and colourful beach huts the area is a popular location for surfers. Due to its location the sea is suitable for beginners and experts alike, with several businesses offering surf lessons or surfboard and equipment hire.

Saltburn by the sea really exudes the Victorian vibes, with its inviting sea and relaxing gardens no other place along the coast of North Yorkshire.

8 THINGS TO DO AT SALTBURN BY THE SEA

Despite being in the depths of Winter, I was keen to get to the coast. I hopped on three trains to get to Saltburn by the Sea and explored the small Victorian seaside town.

Despite it's size, I discovered all the staples of a classic British seaside. I climbed up on the Cleveland Way for some fantastic views, wandered along the pier via the arcades and had a great meal at the Seaview restaurant.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Saltburn Pier

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Saltburn Pier

Saltburn Pier is a pier located in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. It is the last pier remaining in Yorkshire. The Stockton and Darlington Railway arrived in Saltburn from Redcar on 17 August 1861, prompting a growth in day trippers and holiday travellers.

The engineer for the railway line was John Anderson, who saw the investment opportunities in the new town, buying land from the Saltburn Improvement Company. He bought plots in Milton and Amber Streets, as well as Brittania Terrace/Marine Drive - both now Marine Parade - where he designed and erected the Alexandria Hotel. Appointed resident engineer of the SIC in 1867, he designed the town's sewerage system

In October 1867, Anderson formed the Saltburn Pier Company, to undertake construction of a suitable pier. Contracted as designer and chief design engineer, Anderson followed the new pier format developed by Eugenius Birch in his ground breaking design for Margate Pier, by specifying iron screw-piles to support a metal frame and wooden deck.

But access to the pier was difficult from the town via the steep cliff, so Anderson was contracted to build the Cliff Hoist. Constructed of wood, it allowed 20 people to be placed in a wooden cage and then lowered by rope to beach level. It opened on 1 July 1870, some 14 months after the opening of the pier, it was approached from the town by a narrow walkway. The passengers then descended 120 feet (37 m), after water had been added to or taken away from a counterbalance tank.

SALTBURN BY THE SEA, SATURDAY 30th APRIL. NORTH EAST UK DRONE FOOTAGE.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, commonly referred to as Saltburn, is a seaside town in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England, around 26 miles (42 km) south-east of Hartlepool and southeast of Redcar.

It lies within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire. It had a population of 5,958 in 2011.

The development of Middlesbrough and Saltburn was driven by the discovery of ironstone in the Cleveland Hills and the building of two railways to transport the minerals.

Old Saltburn

Old Saltburn
Old Saltburn is the original settlement, located in the Saltburn Gill. Records are scarce on its origins, but it was a centre for smugglers, and publican John Andrew is referred to as 'king of smugglers'.

In 1856, the hamlet consisted of the Ship Inn and a row of houses, occupied by farmers and fishermen. In the mid-18th century, authors Laurence Sterne and John Hall-Stevenson enjoyed racing chariots on the sands at Saltburn.

Victorian era

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, the gardens, c. 1890–1900
The Pease family of Darlington developed Middlesbrough as an industrial centre and, after discovery of iron stone, the Stockton & Darlington Railway and the West Hartlepool Harbour and Railway Company developed routes into East Cleveland. By 1861, the S&DR reached Saltburn with the intention of continuing to Brotton, Skinningrove and Loftus; but the WHH&RCo had already developed tracks in the area, leaving little point in extending the S&DR tracks further.

In 1858, while walking along the coast path towards Old Saltburn to visit his brother Joseph in Marske-by-the-Sea, Henry Pease saw a prophetic vision of a town arising on the cliff and the quiet, unfrequented and sheltered glen turned into a lovely garden.

The Pease family owned Middlesbrough Estate and had control of the S&DR, and agreed to develop Henry's vision by forming the Saltburn Improvement Company (SIC). Land was purchased from the Earl of Zetland, and the company commissioned surveyor George Dickinson to lay out what became an interpretation of a gridiron street layout, although this was interrupted by the railway which ran through the site. With as many houses as possible having sea views, the so-called Jewel streets along the seafront—Coral, Garnet, Ruby, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond and Amber Streets, said to be a legacy of Henry's vision, were additional to the grid pattern.

The Zetland, now an apartment building, formerly the historic Zetland Hotel
After securing the best positions for development by the SIC, money was raised for construction by selling plots to private developers and investors. Most buildings are constructed using 'Pease' brick, transported from Darlington by the S&DR, with the name Pease set into the brick. The jewel in Henry Pease's crown is said to have been The Zetland Hotel with a private platform, one of the world's earliest railway hotels.

The parcel of land known as Clifton Villas was sold by the SIC in 1865 to William Morley from London who built the property, 'The Cottage' (now Teddy's Nook) on a site originally intended for three villas. The SIC stipulated in the deed of covenant that any trees planted along Britannia Terrace (now Marine Parade) were not to exceed 1' 6 above the footpath (46 cm) to preserve sea views for Britannia Terrace residents and visitors.

The Redcar to Saltburn Railway opened in 1861 as an extension of the Middlesbrough to Redcar Railway of 1846. The line was extended to Whitby as part of the Whitby Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway.

Geography
The coastline at Saltburn lies practically east–west, and along much of it runs Marine Parade. To the east of the town is the imposing Hunt Cliff, topped by Warsett Hill at 166 metres (545 ft). Skelton Beck runs through the wooded Valley Gardens in Saltburn, then alongside Saltburn Miniature Railway before being joined by Saltburn Gill going under the A174 road bridge and entering the North Sea across the sandy beach. The A174 road number is now used for the Skelton/Brotton Bypass.

Cliff lift

The Saltburn Cliff Lift is one of the world's oldest water-powered funiculars—the oldest being the Bom Jesus funicular in Braga, Portugal. After the opening of Saltburn Pier in 1869, it was concluded that the steep cliff walk was deterring people from walking from the town to the pier. After the company was taken over by Middlesbrough Estates in 1883, they discovered that the wooden Cliff Hoist had a number of rotten supports.

The Saltburn tramway, as it is also known, was developed by Sir Richard Tangye's company, whose chief engineer was George Croydon Marks. The cliff tramway opened a year later and provided transport between the pier and the town. The railway is water-balanced and since 1924 the water pump has been electrically operated. The first major maintenance was carried out in 1998, when the main winding wheel was replaced and a new braking system installed.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a seaside town in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England

Saltburn by the Sea has maintained much of its original charm as a Victorian seaside resort including its pier, the colourful Italian Gardens and walks through Riftswood. Saltburn has the oldest water balanced cliff tramway in Britain that is still in operation, linking the town with the pier 120 feet below. You can park at sea level where the old fishing village straddles Skelton Beck. The Ship Inn remains as a focal point, steeped in smuggling folklore. The Cleveland Way passes through along the coastline and follows a steep path up to Huntcliff, once the site of a Roman Signal Station.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Saltburn Beach

Saltburn is a seaside resort with a rich heritage dating back to the Victorian heyday and beyond. The town was developed off the back of the Industrial Revolution and the local iron industry in particular. Whilst the boom times may have long passed many of the trappings of the Victorian era remain. There is the pier; once 1,500ft in length, but following many years of neglect and a few disasters, the pier stands at less than half this length.

Situated directly behind the pier is Saltburn's cliff tramway. This was constructed to provide an easy route up and down the 120ft cliff for the delicate ladies of the day, allowing them to be wafted down the cliff to their waiting bathing machines below.
The lift still operates and is the UK's oldest water balanced funicular lift.

Other Victorian highlights include the formal Italian Gardens which are served by a miniature railway. Saltburn beach itself is a sand and shingle affair backed by a promenade and with plenty of facilities close at hand. Saltburn is home to one of the best surf spots along this stretch of North Sea coast. Facing directly north it picks up more swell than neighbouring spots. It is also protected from the wind by the imposing headland of Huntcliff at the eastern end.

Saltburn by the Sea and its Beautiful Beaches Drone Video

A Flight around Saltburn by the Sea on the East coast on a roasting hot UK day, with Huntcliff Cliffs a mile to the south (110m high approx) , some of the highest cliffs along this stretch of coastline and seemingly hosting many seabirds on them, nearby amazing expanses of ancient sea bed, and further north towards the town huge beaches and an old Victorian Funicular cliff railway (not working by the looks of it) leading to the Pier.
