Our visit Oxford travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, colleges, museums and the university. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Oxford tourism brochure, Oxford itinerary or Oxford, England city tour.

15 Things to do in Oxford Travel Guide | Day Trip from London, England video transcript:

Good morning here in London. Today we are taking a day trip. Yes, we sure are. And we're heading off to Oxford. I mean this is obviously a destination that is quite famous. The most famous University in the world.

It is not far from London. So it is a day trip. We're really excited. We're going to film a travel guide to Oxford.

A couple of tips to keep in mind if you're traveling by bus. It is usually cheaper if you book in advance. Also, we noticed that weekdays were cheaper than weekends so we are going on a Friday today and got a good deal.

We made it. We have arrived and that was an awesome trip. We got to see London and the countryside.

Food always comes first. We're about food always. We cannot go sightseeing without a bite of food. We found a pub that is nice and cozy. We're right in the corner and this place apparently specializes in fish and chips.

The University of Oxford has no known foundation date but teaching of some form has taken place here since the year 1096 making it the oldest University in the English speaking world. Today the University is made up for 38 self-governing colleges a few of which are open to visitors.

So one of the things you can do when you visit Oxford is go around and tour the different colleges. We paid two pounds and now we're inside Trinity College.

Trinity College was founded in 1555 and it’s one of the smallest colleges in Oxford admitted just over 400 students. This college has produced some noteworthy figures, including a few prime ministers.

We also saw had a quick glance at Radcliffe College and the Bodleain Library, before continuing on to the University Church.

This is the oldest Botanic Garden in Great Britain and it was originally founded as a medicinal garden. The Garden was also frequently visited by Lewis Carroll, an Oxford mathematics professor, and the gardens were a source of inspiration for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Oxford Castle is a partly ruined Norman castle dating back to Medieval times. During the 18th century it housed the local prison, but today those same walls are home to a hotel.

So I think that is a wrap for our day trip to Oxford. Time to catch our bus. We're tired but we've done the main things we wanted to do. I hope you guys enjoyed this travel guide to Oxford and that it gives you a good idea of how you can kind of explore the city on a day trip from London. If you can come for longer because we wish we had 2 or 3 days here.

This is part of our Travel in England video series showcasing British food, British culture and British cuisine.

Amazing Things to Do in Oxford & Top Oxford Attractions

Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Oxford & Top Oxford attractions. Welcome to the fairy-tale city with magical atmosphere, breath-taking architecture and a lot of greenery. The must-visit place in Oxford is Christ Church College, which was the inspiration and film backdrop for the Harry Potter movies. You will recognize old stone corridors as well as this unique staircase leading directly to the great hall, the centre of the college life where students still eat and banquets are held on special occasions. In the hall you will find a huge collection of portraits and an impressive ceiling, which unfortunately does not reflect the weather as the one in Harry Potter does. Do not miss the 12th century Christ Church Cathedral which is a combination of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Inside you can admire beautiful Gothic vaults and colourful stained-glass windows. Another must-see attraction is the Hertford bridge, better known as the Bridge of Sighs. The bridge is located near the Radcliffe Square and was built in 1914. Speaking of Radcliffe square, be sure to visit this place, where you can find an iconic round building called Radcliffe Camera built in 18th century and used as a science library. Right next to the Radcliffe Camera is the Bodleian Library, one of the oldest libraries in the Europe. Nowadays it is the main research library of the Oxford University and is open to the public. Do you know one of the most popular British drama series, Downton Abbey? From May to September you can visit its filming spot, amazing 17th century Highclere Castle surrounded by splendid 40 ha garden, situated only 53 km from Oxford. It offers tour of the castle as well as the gardens where you may also have a picnic on a sunny day. Be sure to pre-order tickets as the castle is a frequently visited place.

Things to do in Oxford: Tips for Planning Your Trip
Oxford makes the perfect day trip from London – but I always advise to spend more time there if you can. I’d suggest three days to explore the city at a leisurely pace.
Don’t bother with the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus – the city centre is surprisingly small and very walkable. .
I’ve used GetYourGuide for tours in the past as they are generally reliable. The tours offered by the Bodleian Library, the Sheldonian and The Ashmolean are all very interesting.
Wear comfi walking shoes. I mean it. Those cobbles are going to destroy your feet if you venture out in heels.
Oxford Sightseeing Spots – Must-Visit Oxford University Colleges
Christ Church College
If you only have time to visit one of the University of Oxford’s 38 colleges while you are in town, make it Christ Church.
Christ Church’s important history and beautiful architecture make a visit hands down one of the best places to visit in Oxford. The college was founded almost 500 years ago, by Cardinal Wolsey – until he fell from favour and the college was pinched by King Henry VIII (he of divorced, beheaded, died fame… ).
Magdalen College, There aren’t many Oxford colleges that can say they have their own deer park within their grounds… but then Magdalen isn’t like many other Oxford colleges.
Keble College,Find yourself in the Victorian Gothic masterpiece that is Keble College.
Sheldonian Theatre,Situated next to the Old Bodleian Library, you’re bound to notice the Sheldonian Theatre – it’s the Neoclassical style D-shaped building that projects out onto Broad Street. Wondering what it is? The Sheldonian is the official ceremonial hall of Oxford University.
University Church of St Mary’sSt Mary’s Church forms one side of Radcliffe Square
While the church itself is worth a visit, the tower views are absolutely spectacular panoramas.
The Bridge of Sighs,Another of Oxford’s sights, the Bridge of Sighs may look vaguely familiar. That’s because it supposedly looks a bit like on the famous bridge of the same name in Venice.
PS, the entrance to the Turf Tavern – one of Oxford’s oldest and prettiest pubs – is tucked down the alley to the left of the bridge if you’re walking away from the Bodleian Library.
Oxford Castle & Prison, The Oxford Castle & Prison is a medieval Norman castle that’s been transformed into a historical site, hotel and entertainment complex in one.
Cool Things to do in Oxford – Exploring Cultural Oxford
Discover Literary Oxford
Given its strong literary heritage, it’s perhaps no surprise that Oxford has more than its fair share of literary spots. Book-lovers can lose themselves in a world of finding real-life inspirations and locations from their favourite books.
Take Alice in Wonderland for example – Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Dodgson) was a scholar at Christ Church. Not forgetting the fantastical Narnia series, written by the well-known Fellow of Magdalen College, C.S Lewis.
Although there are traces of Narnia throughout Oxford, the best-known is the wooden door in the alley that runs down the side of St Mary’s Church.
Narnia Door Oxford
Best Things to do in Oxford – Food & Drink
The Eagle & Child
Any Tolkien or C.S Lewis fans in the house? You’ll want to add the The Eagle & Child to your things to see and do in Oxford itinerary.
What may look like a relatively standard pub at first glance has an intriguing history.
It’s best-known as the former meeting place of “The Inklings”, a group of writers that included – you guessed it – Tolkien and Lewis.
Oxford Historic Pub Crawl
Whether tucked away on hidden alleys or sat in plain view – Oxford has more than its fair share of historic pubs.
Turf Tavern Oxford
The Turf Tavern
Start with one of the oldest – The Bear Inn. Hidden in the maze of streets between Christchurch and the High Street, there’s been a pub in this spot since 1242 – though its current incarnation dates from the 17th century.
From there, it’s a short hop to The Lamb & Flag. Perched across the road from The Eagle & Child, the Inklings also used The Lamb & Flag as one of their meeting spots.
Botanic Garden
The glasshouses are my personal favourite part of the garden – a stroll through them transports you to different parts of the world, where tropical palms grow taller than houses, or where desert cacti burst into rare blooms.
Any fans of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy

Things to do in Oxford, England: 2 minute guide to the top attractions

Visitor Vids tourist guide to Oxford, England. Make the most of your day out with our brand new, two minute guide to the top visitor attractions in Oxford.

Oxford, some 50 miles west of London, is nicknamed the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. The town revolves around the world-renowned university. Established in the 12th century, there are more than 30 Oxford colleges. Situated in the medieval centre of Oxford – here are three of the most popular.

Christ Church - founded by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in 1524. Its former students include no less than 13 British prime ministers. With its imposing Tom Tower, (the upper part of which was designed by former student Sir Christopher Wren) and Oxford’s greatest quad, the college has also found recent fame as a location for Harry Potter films.

14th century New College was the first college in Oxford for undergraduates – with an impressive chapel and hall, it is a fine example of the Perpendicular Gothic style.

As you walk along New College Lane, look up at the steeped Bridge of Sighs linking the two halves of Hertford College to New College.
Magdalen, founded in 1458, is one of the wealthiest and most beautiful of Oxford's colleges. It has a reputation as a writer’s college. Look out for its fantastic cloisters.

Two other must sees are the Bodleian Library, founded by Sir Thomas Bodley in 1565 and the Radcliffe Camera, one of the city's most photographed buildings.

Oxford also boasts some spectacular museums – amongst the best are the Ashmolean – established in 1683 it is Britain's oldest public museum and The Pitt Rivers anthropological museum.

Oxford is a vibrant city, with a wide selection of shops, hotels and restaurants. Wander through the High Street, past the Carfax Tower (with city views), make a detour to medieval Oxford Castle, continue past the Covered Market towards the Botanic Garden and the beautiful river Thames, called the Isis.
