Koper Cathedral, Koper, Coastal-Karst, Slovenia, Europe
The Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Nazario is the main Catholic place of worship in Koper, Slovenia, the mother church of the diocese of the same name. The church was built in the second half of the XII century in Romanesque style, with three naves each ending in an apse. Until 1392 the church underwent modifications and extensions, which also led to a change of style: the west facade is clearly Gothic. Following an earthquake in 1460, the facade was again designed in 1488, with the addition of Renaissance elements. The tower, which offers a spectacular view of the city and the entire bay, is four stories high, follows the style of the Italian bell tower and houses one of the oldest bells in Slovenia, which dates back to 1333. At the beginning of the eighteenth century Koper was under Venetian influence and once again underwent an architectural transformation in the Baroque style. Under the guidance of Giorgio Massari, further elements of embellishment were brought to the church, including valuable paintings by the Venetian painters Pietro Liberi, Andrea Celesti, Antonio Zanchi and Vittore Carpaccio. The most significant painting is the Sacred Conversation of Vittore Carpaccio, which dates back to 1516. The sarcophagus of San Nazario dates back to the 14th century and was probably created by Filippo de Sanctis.
