Isle of Man by Drone - Sulby Reservoir

Drone Footage of Sulby Reservoir Area - Isle of Man.

The aim is to show there is far more to this island than the TT Races, I love to explore using my Drone and my Motorcycles. My Drone footage even shows me places to re-visit when I view them on the computer screen. Buildings, Valleys, Rivers, Streams, Caves, rock faces that I simply would not know existed until I review this footage. My aim is for you the viewer to also watch these videos and see places that spark that lightbulb moment, they even may make you want to buy a drone and fly the same locations and get closer to those places that I have not yet returned to.

Dam[edit]
The reservoir's dam was completed in 1982. It has a rock-fill embankment 73 metres (240 ft) high.

Geography
It is located in Sulby Glen near the source of the Sulby River, the longest river on the island. Sulby Reservoir is also about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the summit of Snaefell, the island's highest peak. It is operated by the Isle of Man Water Authority.[1]

Use
The reservoir supplies St Johns, Peel, Kirk Michael, Ballaugh, Andreas, Bride, Ramsey and Laxey. Water can also be pumped to the West Baldwin Reservoir which supplies Douglas and the south of the island.

The reservoir also powers a hydro-electric power station one mile (1.6 kilometres) downstream

An energy recovery system[clarification needed] was installed at the Sulby Water Treatment Works in 2013, to generate hydro-electric power from incoming water.

Hills Above Kirk Michael - Isle of Man

Hills Above Kirk Michael - Isle of Man by Drone

Music by Anthony Cubbon - Please check out his channel -

The Isle of Man is located in the middle of the northern Irish Sea, almost equidistant from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland (closest), and Wales (farthest). It is 52 kilometres (32 mi) long and, at its widest point, 22 kilometres (14 mi) wide. It has an area of around 572 square kilometres (221 sq mi). Besides the island of Mann itself, the political unit of the Isle of Man includes some nearby small islands: the seasonally inhabited Calf of Man, Chicken Rock on which stands an unmanned lighthouse, St Patrick's Isle and St Michael's Isle. The last two of these are connected to the main island by permanent roads/causeways.

Ranges of hills in the north and south are separated by a central valley. The northern plain, by contrast, is relatively flat, consisting mainly of deposits from glacial advances from western Scotland during colder times. There are more recently deposited shingle beaches at the northernmost point, the Point of Ayre. The island has one mountain higher than 600 metres (2,000 ft), Snaefell, with a height of 620 metres (2,034 ft). According to an old saying, from the summit one can see six kingdoms: those of Mann, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, and Heaven. Some versions add a seventh kingdom, that of the sea, or Neptune

Cashtal yn Ard - Isle of Man by Drone

Cashtal yn Ard - Isle of Man by Drone

Music by Anthony Cubbon - Please check out his channel -

Cashtal yn Ard, or the Castle of the Heights, is a well preserved chambered tomb situated on raised land overlooking the parish of Maughold.

The monument was originally a megalithic chambered cairn – a conical heap of stones built as a landmark – and could have been used as a communal burial place for Neolithic chieftans and their families.

Cashtal yn Ard dates back to around 2000 BC and although the stone cairn has been stripped away, the large firmly set stones create a dramatic burial site.

Sulby Claddaghs Campsite, Isle of Man. A beautiful place to stay, relax and unwind. | Van life

Take a walk with us round the beautiful Sulby Claddaghs Campsite, its situated just off the main straight in Sulby, off the TT course, with access to two pubs within walking distance. The Gingerhall pub sell delicious Chinese food and normal pub grub where you can have a meal in the pub or take it away back to the campsite. There is no hook up at the Claddaghs but there is plenty of atmosphere during the summer and generators are allowed until 10.00 pm. Kids love it there with the shallow river to play in on hot days (supervised of course). Motorhomes, caravans and tents are allowed. Get a permit online with the IOM Government DEFA Dept for £16.00 for the season then book online. Season starts 1 May - 30 Sept it opens for the Bank holiday Easter weekend also.
It's also a great place for a family picnic if you're not a camping fan.
We are great fans of this place, so if your thinking of taking a visit please pick up your litter and your dog poop there are plenty of large bins around the site.

Isle of Man for Tourists

The Isle of Man is not part of the U.K but is a self-governing British Crown Dependency.
The citizens are Manx and English speaking, however many signs are bi-lingual and appear in both English and Manx Gaelic.
Manannann Mac Lir is name of the mythical Sea God whom the island is named after.
The island is 33 miles in length and 13 miles in width but there's lots for the visitor to do.
If you love walking, there's plenty of coastal paths to choose from.
Public transport is one of the main attractions, Horse trams run the length of Douglas Promenade. The Electric Railway runs from Douglas to Ramsey stopping at Laxey for the famous Laxey Wheel - the worlds biggest water wheel, and you can climb to the top if you're not afraid of heights.
The mountain railway leaves Laxey station and makes it's way up Snaefell Mountain for good views over the island (weather permitting).
A regular Steam train service runs from Douglas to Port Erin via Castletown. This is a highlight for everyone, train spotters especially. Arriving onto the platform in Douglas you will notice the steam engine is separate from the carriages and that's because a man is busy shovelling coal into the engine just as they did in days gone by. When fully laden with coal, steam starts rising out of the chimney and everyone is patiently waiting for the engine to reverse and join up with the old-fashioned carriages.
Spring and Summer are the best times to visit the island as the railways don't run a full service in the winter.
