Glasgow Central Station Scotland | Buchanan Street | Argyle Street | Walking tour | Nov 2022

Glasgow's principal architectural legacy is its impressive assemblage of stately Victorian mansions and public buildings, the product of wealth generated from manufacturing and trade. It gives the centre a solid, slightly staid dignity that is actually rather misleading. More svelte are the sublime designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, which dot the city; visiting a few of his buildings and interiors soon reveals his genius. The city – always proud of its working-class background – also innovatively displays its industrial heritage, while modern structures, many along the Clyde River, have quickly become local icons.

Collecting was big in Victorian times, so it's no surprise that Glasgow's architectural legacy from the period is complemented by some wonderful museums and galleries. Kelvingrove combines natural history and diverse objects from around the world with a first-rate art collection, while nearby Kelvin Hall will hold, from 2020, the University of Glasgow's eclectic Hunterian museum exhibits, paintings and sumptuous Mackintosh interior. On the Clyde, the Riverside holds an excellent ensemble of historic vehicles; to the south, the Burrell Collection (due to reopen in 2020) is an extraordinary corpus of archaeological treasures, objets d'art from around the world and fine paintings.

Places to see in ( East Kilbride - UK )

Places to see in ( East Kilbride - UK )

East Kilbride is the largest town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland. East Kilbride is also designated as Scotland's first new town on 6 May 1947. East Kilbride lies on high ground on the south side of the Cathkin Braes, about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Glasgow and close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire.

East Kilbride is enclosed by the White Cart River to the west and the Rotten Calder to the east, the latter flowing northwards to join the River Clyde near Cambuslang. This area was previously the site of the small village of East Kilbride, prior to its post-war development.

East Kilbride forms part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. However, the urban area is not directly connected to any other. The hamlets of Nerston and Jackton which were once separate settlements are now on the periphery of the expanding town.

Clarkston and Busby are also about 3 miles away to the west, with Thorntonhall much closer. Eaglesham lies to the south-west (again this is about 3 miles from East Kilbride centre). Another modern bypass keeps East Kilbride traffic heading for the M77 motorway away from Eaglesham. The closest town to the south of East Kilbride is Strathaven, about 7 miles away. The majority of land in that area is taken up by Whitelee Wind Farm.

East Kilbride is divided into a number of smaller areas bordered by main through-roads. Part of the new town design was that each of these would be a self-contained entity, with local shops and primary schools. This is true for the original areas of the town but newer developments, such as Stewartfield do not adhere to this model.

East Kilbride is connected to Glasgow city centre by road and rail. Three main roads connect East Kilbride with surrounding suburbs and the city, one being the A727 (formerly A726) leading west to Busby and on to Clarkston Toll. East Kilbride bus station, at the East Kilbride Shopping Centre, was rebuilt in June 2005 with modern facilities, including 14 rapid drive-through stances, allowing quick turnover of buses. East Kilbride railway station is situated in the Village, about a 10-minute walk from the bus station. Trains depart to Glasgow Central railway station every half-hour, with a journey time of about 27 minutes. The town is also served by Hairmyres railway station in Hairmyres.

( East Kilbride - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of East Kilbride . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in East Kilbride - UK

If you enjoy these videos I would love to hear about it. We look at the best and worst cities, states, towns, and neighborhoods in the United States. Occasionally we do other countries. Most of the time focus on the negative side of locations. That is just what people want to see.
If you only want some happy positive information about a city, town, or state, I would suggest looking up local mortgage and real estate companies or maybe the locations website. They are trying to sell you something so it will be nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and a bunch of smoke up your skirt. They won't tell you about crime, poverty, or insurance you'll need because of natural disasters. I will.

Old Photographs Eaglesham East Renfrewshire Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Eaglesham in East Renfrewshire. Eaglesham is located 10 miles south of Glasgow to the southeast of Newton Mearns, south of Busby and Clarkston, and southwest of East Kilbride. The ancient seat of the Earls of Eglinton; in the 17th century Eaglesham was a small market town; the present village was founded in 1769 by Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton; it had at one time handloom weaving and a cotton mill. Eaglesham House or Eaglesham Castle as it was known locally, was built in 1859 by the Gilmour brothers. James and Allan Gilmour had bought the estate of Eaglesham from the Earl of Eglinton in 1844. Allan Gilmour had been a founder and partner in the firm of Pollok and Gilmour, ship owners and timber importers until retiring in 1839. The mansion was designed in the Scots baronial style with a square tower as the dominating feature. In the grounds of the mansion house there were offices, gardens, two lodge houses, parks and plantations. Unfortunately, this grand mansion was badly damaged by fire in 1954 and was not rebuilt. The village is an example of an early Scottish planned village.it takes its name from the French word eglise, or church, earning this as a result of its apparent abundance of places of worship in the past. Polnoon Street in Eaglesham was once known as North Street and borrows its name from Polnoon Estate. Sir John de Montgomerie built a castle at Polnoon with the poind money that he received for the release of Lord Percy following the Battle of Otterburn. There have been several suggestions as to the meaning of the name Eaglesham but the most likely explanation is that Eaglesham means kirkton or church town derived from the Gaelic word eaglais meaning church and the Saxon ham meaning hamlet or village. In 1361, Sir John de Montgomerie of Eaglesham and Eastwood married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Hugh de Eglinton of that Ilk and niece of King Robert II. Sir John obtained the baronies of Eglinton and Ardrossan upon Sir Hugh's death in 1374. Afterwards the Montgomeries made Eglinton Estate their chief residence. In 1388, Sir John de Montgomerie captured Henry, Lord Percy at the Battle of Otterburn. It is traditionally believed that Sir John accepted a ransom for his prisoner who killed the 2nd Earl of Douglas and built Polnoon Castle on a small hillock on what appears to be an earlier motte. Polnoon castle was refurbished for occupation in 1617 but was ruined by 1676

Old Photographs Of Langside Glasgow Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Langside, Scottish Gaelic: An Leathad Fada, meaning the Long Hill, a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated south of the River Clyde, and lies east of Shawlands, south of Queens Park, west of Cathcart and north of Newlands. The original village of Langside was based around what is now Algie Street, named after Glasgow Merchant Matthew Algie. There were two mills nearby on the White Cart river, a meal mill and a paper mill which dated back to the 17th century. In the early 19th century most of the inhabitants of the village were weavers although they also cultivated fruits and flowers. In the late 19th century as Glasgow expanded South during the rapid growth of the industrialisation in the city the area was built up with tenements, the area became part of the City of Glasgow in 1891 with the last of the original weaver's cottages being demolished in 1905. The area was served by trams from 1901. The Glasgow Victoria Infirmary was a teaching hospital situated at Langside from 1880 until 2015. It provided a range of health care services including Accident and Emergency, General Medicine, including sub specialties, General Surgery, including sub specialties. Medicine for the Elderly, including Assessment, Rehabilitation, and Day Services, Orthopaedics and a wide range of outpatient clinics. In later years it had an acute operational bed complement of approximately 370. Queen's Park School in Langside was established in 1876 and in use until 1966. In 1568 the area was the site of the Battle of Langside, the last battle fought by the forces of Mary, Queen of Scots, prior to her exile and death in England.

Whitelee Wind Farm - Scotland's Best Gravel Ride? | Aerial Drone Footage of UK's Largest Wind Farm

Took a ride out to Whitelee Wind Farm on a crisp December morning to get some nice aerial shots. Is this Scotland's best gravel ride? It was a beautiful but freezing cold morning so enjoy the sights.

Still working on my drone piloting skills some of the shots were a bit shaky in the high winds.

I would also urge you to go listen to Beluga Lagoon, the track in the video is called The Snail. It's the perfect soundtrack for exploring Scotland's great outdoors, unfortunately though, it was so cold that I didn't manage to get enough footage to get to the best bit of the song! So apologies to Beluga Lagoon for cutting short their masterpiece. Go Check them out!
