Kasteel Van Beersel
The moated castle of Beersel is one of the few exceptionally well-preserved examples of medieval fortifications in Belgium. It remains pretty much as it must have appeared in the late 15th century. Over the course of the centuries, this moated castle has had a very eventful history. Visitors experience at first hand what it must have felt like to live in a heavily fortified castle in medieval times.
In 1999, the municipality of Beersel acquired the castle on lease from a national heritage foundation, the Koninklijke Vereniging der Historische Woonsteden van België (Royal Association of Historic Cities and Gardens in Belgium). The municipality aims to carry out repairs, renovations and upgrades to the castle. Since 2003 the castle has been undergoing a series of restoration campaigns.

Brussels is Belgium’s capital and home to the European Union headquarters. The Grand-Place square at the heart of the city has shops and cafes inside ornate 17th-century guildhouses, and the intricate Gothic Hôtel de Ville (town hall) with a distinctive bell tower. The 19th-century Maison du Roi houses the Musée de la Ville de Bruxelles city-history museum, including costumes for the city’s famed Manneken Pis statue.
Colorful murals throughout Brussels share the stage with the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée, devoted to comic-strip art. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium encompass art from Old Masters to the present, and the Magritte Museum presents hundreds of works by the renowned Belgian surrealist. The European Quarter contains the European Parliament building, dinosaur skeletons at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Parc Léopold and art-nouveau mansions. Built for a 1958 World’s Fair, the iconic Atomium offers panoramic views. South of the city, 14th-century Beersel Castle has steepled towers, a drawbridge and a moat.

Kasteel Gaasbeek Belgie
Net buiten Brussel, middenin de glooiende heuvels van het Pajottenland, troont het Kasteel van Gaasbeek. De middeleeuwse burcht kende een bewogen geschiedenis en evolueerde van strategisch bolwerk naar riant buitenverblijf.
Een van de bekendste eigenaars was de Graaf van Egmond. Op het einde van de negentiende eeuw kreeg het huidige gebouw zijn romantische restyling dankzij de excentrieke markiezin Arconati Visconti. Zij richtte het kasteel in als museum voor haar enorme kunstcollectie en bespeelde het als historisch theaterdecor. De droomburcht die toen ontstond, heeft ook nu nog iets van een tijdmachine.
Het Kasteel van Gaasbeek ligt middenin een uitgestrekt park (49 hectare) dat reeds in de zeventiende eeuw werd aangelegd. Indrukwekkende dreven en kleine wandelpaden wisselen elkaar af. Wellicht staan hier zelfs de hoogste beuken van België!
Bovendien creëert het Kasteel van Gaasbeek regelmatig tentoonstellingen in samenwerking met kunstenaars. Deze projecten combineren geschiedenis, erfgoed, kunst, verhalen en theater op een sfeervolle en interactieve manier.
