Inside Saudi Arabia’s $800 Billion Travel Destination Transformation | Forbes

Saudi Arabia is on a massive building spree—creating private islands, luxury hotels, theme parks, cruise ports, and even a desert ski resort. The question remains: If they build it, who will come?

It can be difficult to visualize the vastness of Saudi Arabia’s physical transformation. Some of the most notable ongoing projects—including Sindalah, a 7-star private island, and Trojena, an improbable desert ski resort—fall within NEOM, a $500-billion built-from-scratch region in northwest Saudi Arabia where the Kingdom is creating new cities, resorts and other developments. Bankrolled mainly by the Kingdom’s $700-billion Public Investment Fund (PIF), the idea for NEOM was born out of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s grand plan to shake off its historic reliance on oil and diversify its economy, reinventing the country as a global tourism juggernaut.

Euromonitor predicts that international tourists will spend $38 billion in 2030. But the total economic impact for Saudi Arabia will be far greater after adding in domestic travelers’ expenditures and the ripple effect of one million new tourism jobs. The World Travel & Tourism Council projects that, by 2032, Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector could contribute nearly $169 billion to its GDP, representing 17.1% of the total Saudi economy.

Saudi Arabia Travel - One Day in Riyadh ???????? المملكة العربية السعودية مدينة الرياض السفر سياحة أجنبي

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast.

In this video I travel to Riyadh, the capital city in the center of the country. After visiting a mosque for Friday prayer and eating lunch with the locals, I tour to modern shopping malls, museums, traditional bazaars, a construction site with migrant workers, the famous Sky Bridge Kingdom Tower, and finally the Riyadh Season Festival, designed to promote tourism and culture. While I spent almost 3 days in Riyadh, I comprised the video to make it into one single day.

This is the first episode of a 6 part vlog style series about my journey through Saudi Arabia. For other episodes, please click here:

Episode 2 - Journey to the Edge of the World:

Episode 3 - Medina as Non Muslim:

Episode 4 - Umluj Islands in the Red Sea:

Episode 5 - Camel Racing in Saudi Arabia:

Episode 6 - Jeddah City Tour:

Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. In these series I hope to give a glimpse into what was once an almost ‘forbidden place’ for independent travelers, and is now open for visitors from around the world.

We Went To Saudi Arabia.

In today's episode, we take you along on one of our craziest trips so far. Never in a million years did we think we'd go to Saudi Arabia this soon. Then, all of a sudden, we decided to just do it.

We were hesitant to go given all we’ve read about the country.

During our journey to 100 countries and beyond, we will undoubtedly visit countries where we don’t agree with certain laws or practices, and personally, we don’t want this to stop us from going.

After all, how can we build understanding if we refuse to meet people, or are not open-minded enough to talk to someone who might disagree with us? We need more understanding, respect, and international cooperation, not greater divides.

Our intention has always been to use our platform as a personal diary to look back on, and we want to take every opportunity we can to grow and learn more about the world.

More videos from Saudi Arabia coming soon!????????

Thank you for always supporting us and being the best people on the planet????❤️

This is Riyadh - The Desert Metropolis! (A Cultural Tour of Saudi Arabia's Capital City)

Saudi Arabia's vast capital city has remained off the tourist circuit for decades, preferring to restrict visitors to those wishing to do business. However, that situation is changing rapidly as Saudi Arabia opens to the world and Riyadh steps into the limelight as a global sporting, cultural and business hub.

I arrived in Riyadh with an image of a dusty city of busy highways and vast shopping malls. But as I soon found out, there’s much more to the city than those stereotypes. During my short visit I sampled the cultural life, went walking in the air (via a skybridge), stepped into the future and the past, experienced the Noor festival of light, and bought lot of dates!

Is there any history in Riyadh? Yes...
Al masmak fortress (palace) is now a museum that details how the the army of King Abdul Aziz retook the fort in the 1902 battle of riyadh. The restoration of Saudi control over the capital was a key event in the unification of the entire country and the establishment of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Models and old photographs show clearly how even into the 50s Riyadh extended little beyond the fort’s walls. Nearby you'll find Justice Square, once violent but now an oasis for coffee lovers.

Is there any culture in Riyadh? Yes....
The national museum of Saudi Arabia is the jewel in Riyadh’s cultural crown. With a rich collection of artefacts It studies The history of the Arabian peninsula over the centuries from pre-islamic times to the modern Saudi state. You’ll find priceless examples of rock art, these standing stones are some of the earliest monuments of arabia and date from the 4th millennium bc. Curious how there’s an element of pop art in these ancient symbols. The hall dedicated to the Nabateans and their city at Hegra includes a recreation of one of the famous rock tombs. The story of the prophet Muhammed is, of course, given great prominence and I learnt a huge amount about his legendary flight to Medina to avoid his circling enemies in Mecca, a story that is close to the heart of all muslims but less well known in the wider world.
The halls dedicated to the two holy mosques at Mecca and Medina are a must see. For a non muslim this is as close to experiencing Mecca as I will ever get. The scale models are simply stunning.
The natural world is not forgotten, from stunning desert roses to a meteorite from the empty quarter.
In short, this is a world class museum.

What is the tallest building in Riyadh?
Kingdom tower sits above a shopping mall and its lobby has an art deco vibe. The 99 storeys include offices, a hotel and luxury apartments, all with incredible views over the city, but none that beat those of the skybridge 300m above the city streets.

What is the KAFD?
A host of world famous architects have been brought in to give shape to the KAFD (The King Abdullah Financial District). This city within a city feels to me a little like London’s Barbican centre, albeit updated for the 21st century in Arabia.
Whilst there I was lucky to catch the 3rd edition of Noor Riyadh, the largest light festival in the world.

I really enjoyed my short time (just 2 days) in Riyadh and hope to visit again.

The Kingdom and Beyond - SAUDI ARABIA Cinematic (Travel Video)

In just 10 days over the course of a month, I captured over 4500 kilometres of Saudi content. My journey took me from the beautiful oceans in the east to the aqua-coloured ocean in the west, from the skyscrapers in the capital city of Riyadh to the breathtaking natural beauty and magnificent monuments in Al Ula, which contains the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Kingdom. I experienced the never-ending traffic in Riyadh and the never-ending festivals in Jeddah, as well as the traditional yet modern city of Jazan and the kingdom of mountains in Abha.

It has always been my dream to present Saudi Arabia to the world for what it truly is - a beautiful country with great tradition, history, heritage, and culture that I am proud to call my home. During my journey, I met many people who were more than helpful and who helped me realize this dream. I am sincerely grateful for their assistance.

This project is also an attempt to promote tourism activities happening in the Kingdom under the banner of VisitSaudi as part of the Vision2030 initiative by King Salman & Prince Mohammed bin Salman. May Allah Almighty bless us all. Long live the King and God bless this country.
