What to Expect Visiting Santiago, Chile On a Weekend (2022)

In this video, we take you through our weekend in Chile (plus some bonus footage from Monday)! After arriving at the airport in Santiago on a Wednesday, we got a PCR test, quarantined on Thursday, and by the time the weekend rolled around, we were ready to explore!

SATURDAY:
A jam-packed day on Saturday was a must. We got an early start so we could see as much of the city as possible.

Stop 1: Cerro San Cristóbal - Here, we took a gondola to the top of the hill to see the famous Virgin Mary statue and church, as well as enjoy some of the best city views. The gondola ride was about $7 per person and took about 10 minutes. It's a wonderful experience and the gondolas themselves were so nice!

Stop 2: Japanese Gardens - In the same park as the gondolas, there is a section dedicated to a Japanese Garden. You can enjoy the serenity of the pond and lush greenery with the city in the backdrop behind it. It's a bit smaller than many other Japanese Gardens we have seen, but it's worth a quick stop in if you're in the area, and it's free!

Stop 3: Parque Esculptura (Sculpture Park) in Santiago - The park is filled with tons of different sculptures and are pieces to walk through. We wish we planned for a picnic because this would have been a great spot for some wine and cheese. Also free!

Stop 4: Costanera Mall - A giant mall very close to the sculpture park, Costanera Mall is a great stop if you want to do some shopping or just see the craziness of this massive shopping center. We were able to find lots of brands that we were familiar with and purchase a few things that would have been more difficult to find in Argentina. I got new trail runners for hiking!

Stop 5: Bella Vista - A stylish and trendy neighborhood filled with restaurants and bars. We ate at a Peruvian restaurant and are excited to go back and check out the nightlife scene.

SUNDAY:
We worked for a bit in the morning on Sunday, so we got a later start. Once we headed out we realized the city is fairly sleepy on Sunday's and a lot of places were closed. We managed to stop by a couple new spots before heading home to get some work done in the afternoon.

Stop 1: Mercado Central - The infamous fish market in Santiago is a must-visit. You can see fresh fish being sold and eat at one of the many restaurants in the market. We tried two restaurants here and can't say we loved either of them, but it's something you have to visit while you're in the city.

Stop 2: Plaza de Armas - After wandering around the city for a bit, we found ourselves in Plaza de Armas, which is a central point in downtown Santiago. We walked through the museum of natural history before heading home. The Museum was free!

MONDAY:
Bonus day since so much was closed on Sunday! Spoiler: a lot was closed on Monday too!

STOP 1: Cerro Santa Lucia - This giant park is supposedly filled with a castle and beautiful to walk through. We can't confirm this yet as our two attempts to visit have been unsuccessful, but we are determined to get inside the park before we leave Santiago.

STOP 2: Barrio Italia - We bopped around this neighborhood for a bit and got some coffee and snacks. There are tons of cool shops and artistry stands, though many were closed during our visit.

We hope you enjoyed coming along for a weekend in Santiago with us! If you have any recommendations for us, share them in the comments below. :)

WHY I LOVE SANTIAGO, CHILE ????????

► SUBSCRIBE for daily travel videos:
► INSTAGRAM for more!

**I made this video 2.5 years ago, but only shared it to Facebook...so I wanted to post it for all you guys here on YouTube! Please excuse the fast paced editing and shaky camera -- I was a newbie back then**

I'm not kidding when I say that SANTIAGO, CHILE is one of the most underrated cities in South America!! The last 4 days here have been absolutely perfect!

Santiago often gets overlooked by other South American cities like Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and even Lima -- but don't let that fool you, because Santiago truly has it all, and it surely caught me by surprise.

Chile, as a whole, is the longest country in the world (4,300 km) from North to South, and it has a lot to offer (especially for all you nature lovers). From the Atacama desert in the North, to the fjords in the South and the spectacular landscapes of Patagonia in between.

Also, did you know that Chile has the most stable economy and government in all of Latin America? I could certainly notice this by the hustle and bustle on the streets, where so many people here have small businesses and are hustling to make an extra buck (as opposed to begging or making money in illegal ways). Pretty impressive stuff, if you ask me.

I'm looking forward to exploring more of Chile over the coming days (heading to Valparaíso tomorrow!)

What's your favorite city in South America? Let me know - I am curious what you all think!

20 Things to do in Santiago, Chile City Guide | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:

Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.

Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.

For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.

Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.

Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.

Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.

Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.

Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

And that's a wrap for the Chilean capital! We hope you enjoyed this Santiago travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do, places to visit, and Chilean dishes to try in the city.

WHY I LOVE SANTIAGO, CHILE ????????

#shorts

This is Santiago, Chile ???????? Safe? Beautiful? Must Visit? What to do in the city. Travel Guide

We spent a full day checking out some of major sights to try to find the best things to in Santiago de Chile.

We started out the day with a run and headed to the beautiful Parque Bicentario where we saw some beautiful views of the city and mountains. We ran around the park for awhile to see what it had to offer and came across some flamingos.

We picked up the video later in the day in the centre of town in the Plaza de Armas, which is the main square in Santiago. From here we picked up our Hop on Hop off tickets from Turistik Chile and immediate hopped on a bus!

To book your Santiago Hop on Hop off ticket visit here (we had the “plus” ticket):

The Hop on Hop off bus took us throughout a large part of the city where we got to see many of the important sites and also listen to an audio guide.

We got off at the tallest building in Latin America called the Costanera Centre (Gran Torre). Here we bought tickets to the observation deck called Sky Costanera. The observatory is this highest in Latin America and offers amazing views of the city and Andes Mountains.

After this we walked to the cable car to make our way up Cerro San Cristobal, a park on a hill in the middle of the city. The tickets to the cable car were included in our Hop on Hop off ticket and also included the funicular down the hill.

Up at the top of Cerro San Cristobal you’ll find beautiful views of the city. You’ll also find a church as well as a statue of the Virgin Mary which you can see from the ground in most of the city.

ABOUT SANTIAGO
Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city, sits in a valley surrounded by the snow-capped Andes and the Chilean Coast Range. Plaza de Armas, the grand heart of the city’s old colonial core, is home to 2 neoclassical landmarks: the 1808 Palacio de la Real Audiencia, housing the National History Museum, and the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral. La Chascona is the home-turned-museum of poet Pablo Neruda.

ABOUT CHILE
Chile is a long, narrow country stretching along South America's western edge, with more than 6,000km of Pacific Ocean coastline. Santiago, its capital, sits in a valley surrounded by the Andes and Chilean Coast Range mountains. The city's palm-lined Plaza de Armas contains the neoclassical cathedral and the National History Museum. The massive Parque Metropolitano offers swimming pools, a botanical garden and zoo.

We start our exploration of Santiago with a visit to Plaza de Armas before heading to Paseo Ahumada to check out the many shops that pop up along this busy pedestrian street. We also visit the Catedral de Santiago, Plaza de la Constitucion (Constitution Plaza) to see La Moneda Palace (the President's Palace), Mercado la Vega (La Vega Market), Santiago Mercado Central (Santiago's Central Market), and San Cristobal Hill.

In between these attractions we try as many foods as we can stomach in one day! We managed to get our hands on some delicious Chilean flan (we are pretty sure it was flan), crab empandadas, piscola, torta de mil hojas (cake of a thousand leaves), mote con huesillo, hamburguesa chilena from Antigua Fuente, and chorrillana.
