⚡️ For a complete travel guide to the Pamir Highway: 8 Days Pamir Highway Itinerary (

On the 2nd of October 2017, 8 strangers from different backgrounds all came together coincidentally to set out on a road trip across Central Asia for 8 days through the Pamir Highway, the second-highest highway in the world. An unlikely band of strangers traveling along one of the most remote roads in the world has led me to experience one of the best trips of my life.

We started our journey from Osh, Kyrgyzstan and crossed the border to Tajikistan, and travel the mountainous region of the Pamir Mountains through Karakul, Murghab, Bulunkul, Langar, Wakhan valley, Ishkashim, Khorog, and lastly Dushanbe.

There's something about taking a remote and disconnected multi-day trip that always leaves me aching for more days with these beautiful souls. We spent 8 days together day and night, experiencing amazing things together, killing boredom together, and while all that becoming great friends. This road trip is the definition of traveling miracles.

I hope you enjoy this road trip video as much as I do making them. What do you think of the video? Does it make you wanna go on a road trip with us? Let me know in the comments!

Finishing the PAMIR HIGHWAY! - TAJIKISTAN - The Way Overland - Episode 73

Our lush green sun-kissed hilltop camp spot we left the last episode on decided to surprise us with a turn for the worse the following morning so we decided to push on and get off the mountain as soon as possible to avoid potentially getting stuck.

The track was saturated from the heavy rain and the low cloud only enhanced the dramatic scenery. The climb to the 3258m pass took us up though the farming fields, sharp rocks, raging rapids, and snow all the while passing landmine warning signs. We were intrigued to see a heard of sheep and their shepherd roaming the hill behind the signage. The mountains here are covered in landmines planted during the civil war from 1992 - 1997. Mines still cover approx. 2500 square kilometres of Tajikistan with international efforts now assisting to de-mine. Something to keep in mind when going off road!!

Once crossing the pass the weather begun to ease and sunshine was on the mountainous horizon. The opposing side of the range was different than the Wakhan Valley we had just left, the topography appearing to cause more rainfall and less sunshine. The tracks resultantly were very muddy and there were countless landslides, one which stopped us in our tracks. From the adjacent side of the valley we could see the roughly 100m wide slide had taken out a significant amount of the road ahead of us. After speaking to some local shepherds and putting the binoculars to use we could see that 1, there was another, almost larger slide further down the valley, and 2. that thankfully there had been a makeshift road cut in on our side of the valley to bypass the obstruction. We slowly took the very narrow and muddy track down to the small village at the bottom, crossed a creek, a bridge, and tackled the bottom of the bigger landslide thankfully following some ruts to stop us sliding off the track. The damp weather continued as the valley narrowed and after several hours we followed the angry brown river out the bottom of the valley and into the wide open farming fields. This marked the end of the potholes, corrugations, and our time in the mountains for now.

We cruised into the capital Dushanbe and found ourselves another great camp spot in the orchards to the East of the City. Although this spot was beautiful and had an amazing view, we needed to head down in to the city to stock up on supplies, do some servicing on the Troopy, catching up on these episodes, and check in with family.

Finding cost effective places to stay in cities that have parking is never easy so after trawling the internet and driving to several, we found a great family run hostel called City Hostel. It has a big secure parking area, great breakfast and WIFI, and they were happy for us to stay in the Troopy! Win! We stayed for a few nights making the most of the power to trying to catch up on the videos and run errands.
We had noticed a slight noise coming from the front of the Troopy when 4wding so we wanted to get on top of that. To attempt to isolate the noise Mark greased all the front components with the next step to drop and replace the diff oil. We visited around 7 different ‘oil shops’ none which had what we were looking for. After several hours we were lucky to come across a workshop, which specialised in Mercedes, who had an oil which would suffice for now. Buying oils in this part of the world has to be done with a degree of caution as black market products run rife. An extreme amount of effort is put into the fake packaging so distinguishing between real and counterfeit is not easy, and to be honest, although we searched hard we can not be guaranteed ours was legitimate. Moments like this really make you appreciate the little conveniences of home and the ability to duck down to the local car store and buy exactly what you want and know you’re buying the real deal.

In the end the oil was changed by a group of friendly mechanics and the noise resided. We did a spot of shopping, left the hostel, and hit the road again and stocked up and ready for another adventure into Allaudin Lake.

Thanks for watching!

Tajikistan, Pamir Highway & Wakhan Valley. Motorbike Around the World - Episode 11

Riding in Tajikistan on the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan Valley. Traveling motorbike around the world.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT:

CHECK OUT THIS TRAVEL SERIES FROM THE START

EPISODE 11
The motorcycle adventure through the Pamir mountains of Tajikistan continues. After a night at Karakul Lake we head all the way back to Khoroch down the Pamir Highway where we take a left turn from the M41 Silk road into the Wakhan Valley. Again we're riding next to a wide river bordering Afghanistan. The road starts out a bit boring being tarmac, wide and when there is none lots of corrugations. We've been spoiled in the Bartang valley and I know it. Second half of the Wakhan is great, wild and at some point you could walk across to Afghanistan if you wanted to. Meet riders and cyclists along the way. In the evening reach the Pamir Highway again and start running out of fuel. Make it with the last drop to Alichur. Last ride through Murghab and past Karakul Lake again but this time straight to Kyrgyz. The sun is setting and those final moments in Tajikistan feel like something surreal. A special experience which I appreciated only more as time passed by. Already I started to think about time and unfortunately these were the final days of not thinking too much about time.

Enjoy this short motorcycle adventure documentary in Tajikistan. Put together with the video footage that I recorded back in 2014.

VLOG | Tajikistan | The Pamir Highway, Osh to Dushambe

Two thirty-somethings have quit their jobs to travel the world.

The Pamir mountains towered around us as we crossed into Tajikistan and climbed mountain passes over 4500M and into the most inspiring high altitude landscape. As far as the eye could see, we were the only car in sight along the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan corridor, bordering Afghanistan. This was our most rugged and epic road trip.

Our driver, Shamil, can be contacted at the site below:

THE PAMIR HIGHWAY ROAD TRIP (Part 1)

In this Tajikistan Travel Vlog, we started on one of the greatest road trips on this planet: The Pamir Highway. Read more about it here: (Gorno-Badakshan Autonomous Region)
We met with two other curious travellers at Green House Hostel in Dushanbe and found a driver at Hello Dushanbe Hostel with whom we signed up for a nine day excursion. We drove from Dushanbe to Kalai Khum / Darvoz and then onwards to Khorog the capital of the GBAO region. Of course, this is one the priciest things we've done till date while on the road - but we explain why and how much in this series.

Tajikistan - Road Trips in the Eastern Pamir

Crossing into Tajikistan from Kyrgyzstan we were immediately confronted with barren landscape, high-altitude crossings, and rugged mountains. From the Pamir Plateau we looped along Tajikistan's borders of China to the east and Afghanistan to the south. Next we returned and headed west through some even-more spectacular landscapes.

Travel lessons from the legendary Pamir Highway!

THE TAJIKISTAN ADVENTURE JUST WON'T STOP! ;-)
If you're not yet a Subscriber, make sure you do that now and ask your friend's to do the same. :-)

In this week's installment, follow us as we leave the shores of Karakul (Tajikistan's mighty 'dead lake' in the north) and journey to the COLDEST SPOT IN THE WHOLE OF CENTRAL ASIA!.
How cold are we talking? Think -30°C ( -22°F)...IN SUMMER!

But, first, there is the journey to get there.
This is all part of the experience because we get to:
a) see the intense preparations being planned for Tajikistan's independence celebration in the strategically-located town of Murghab;
b) hear the heart-wrenching stories of some of the Uyghur communities in this part of the country that butts right up against China's Xinjiang province;
c) learn (and see!) even more of this barren and desolate highland!

But, there is an urgency, too: we DESPERATELY need to find a spot along this ~300-kilometre stretch of treacherous highway to charge ALL our devices.
If we can't get our drone, GoPros, cameras, and stabilisers charged up sufficiently, our ambitious project could come to a halt.
PLUS, our car has developed some major mechanical fault because of the rough terrain and the high altitude and we're gradually running out of options...

Tajikistan: From the Wakhan Valley onto the Pamir Highway until Kyrgyzstan | The Long Road Ep. 44

On the Wakhan Valley we headed towards the Pamir Highway until we reached Kyrgyzstan. The landscape was epic as usual.

A big thank you to everybody who let me awkwardly film them :)

Filmed handheld with the Panasonic G80/G81/G85 and the iPhone 6.

The long Road (TlR) is a journey from Germany all the way to Nepal, through the middle east, following the old silk road, China and South-East Asia. The whole journey will be overland (no planes, UFOs or portals) and put together into short videos on this channel :)

Greetings,
Georg

4K Travel: Epic road trip on Pamir Highway to Murgab

The Pamir Highway is a road with a length of over 1,500 km, which begins in Dushanbe and ends in Osh. The peculiarity of this road is that it passes at altitudes from 900 to 4655 meters, and the route runs through the picturesque mountainous regions of the Pamirs.

Due to the harsh mountain climate, the quality of the road can be described as extreme in many sections. For this reason, we recommend alternative routes from Dushanbe to Kalai-Khumba and from Khorog to Murghab. While the longer route takes less time on the first section, the second section from Khorog to Murghab offers a lot of mountainous natural beauty and ancient monuments of the Wakhan corridor.

The distance from Langar to Murghab is 255 km. The roads here are of poor quality and it takes 7-8 hours to cover this distance.

The first 100km of the route is on a bad unpaved road and then there is asphalt, but it has many bumps and undulations that make it difficult to drive at a steady high speed. In addition, during the day there will be an obstacle climb from 2800 m to 3600 m above sea level as well as overcoming two passes - Khargush (4344 m) and Nayzatash (4137 m).

If you see many mud houses on the background of a stone plateau and the highest mountains in the distance then you have arrived in Murghab.

The town has hospitals, military bases, a bazaar, a bank, and several guesthouses. The few cafes that work here are clustered around the bazaar. The Murghab River flows along the lower part of the town, where cattle graze.

On the way there will be many interesting landscapes for photo stops such as high mountain lakes and green grasslands near Murghab. The whole picture looks great.

Murghab is a mountain village in the Eastern part of Tajikistan, located at an altitude of 3600 meters above sea level. At this altitude, there is almost no vegetation and the trees are looked after like small children.

Langar is a high mountain village of Wakhan valley in South Pamir, located at an altitude of 3000 m and surrounded on all sides by six thousand peaks of Pamir and Hindu Kush. Langar is inhabited by Wakhan people and is famous for its rock paintings.

The city was built during the Soviet era and is an important transport hub as well as the largest city in eastern GBAR. Most of its residents are ethnic Kyrgyz, but they live in dwellings more typical of Tajiks.

On the way to Murghab, you can see the Panj River, which is one of the main rivers of Tajikistan. The upper reaches of the Amu Darya are called Pianj, it is the border river, on the other side of which stretches Afghanistan and the snowy peaks of the Hindu Kush rise into the clouds. Panj means five in Tajik, because it is formed by five rivers.

The river channel is wide, often divides into branches, and its current is calm. Below the village of Ishkashim, the Panj takes a sharp turn in the north and the river valley narrows, turning in places into dark canyons several tens of metres wide. The Ishkashim and Langar bridges, as well as the highway bridge between Tajikistan and Afghanistan in the Lower Panj region, have been built on the river.

Also, visitors to Murghab may feel the signs of mountain sickness, due to a lack of oxygen. The climate is also harsh, with very dry air, strong cold winds, high ultraviolet light, and sometimes +40° heat in summer and -40° cold in winter.

Murgab is the best place to use as a base for traveling to remote areas in the mountains, close to the Kyrgyz-Chinese border.
