Paramaribo Suriname Palmentuin Garden Tour
Garden of Palms or Palmgardens is a palm tree landscape garden in Paramaribo, Suriname.
In addition to tall royal palms, the grounds are home to tropical birds and a troop of capuchin monkeys. Palmentuin is located on Van Roseveltkade behind the Presidential Palace of Suriname and is a tourist attraction.
Royal palms were planted on the grounds by order of Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck Governor of Suriname from 1683-1688. He opened the garden to the public in 1685. He was murdered in 1688 by a group of mutinous soldiers. Afterwards the garden was closed to the public until in the early 20th century. The park includes a playground and on holidays there are stalls. In 2002, the city of Paramaribo was put on the World Heritage List at the UN and the garden was cited specifically as a feature.[2] In 2009, the UNESCO made US $147,000 available to refurbish the palm garden.

De Palmentuin in Paramaribo ligt achter het voormalige Gouverneurshuis dat aan het Onafhankelijkheidsplein staat.
De tuin staat vol koningspalmen, die daar in opdracht van Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck, die van 1683-1688 gouverneur van Suriname was, werden geplant voor zijn overleden vrouw. Hij stelde in 1685 de tuin open voor het publiek, maar hieraan kwam een einde toen hij in 1688 door een groep muitende soldaten werd vermoord.
Pas in het begin van de 20ste eeuw werd de tuin weer voor het publiek opgengesteld. Er staan nu enkele beelden en er is een speeltuintje. Op feestdagen staan er allerlei kraampjes. 's Avonds is het een plek waar zwervers en junks samenkomen.
Een van de beeldjes in het park is geplaatst door ouders wier zoontje stikte nadat hij in een koelkast terecht was gekomen. Een onderschrift waarschuwt mensen dat ze goed op hun kinderen moeten passen.
Nadat Paramaribo in 2002 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de VN was geplaatst stelde de UNESCO in 2009 US$ 147.000 ter beschikking om de palmentuin op te knappen. De werkzaamheden duurden acht maanden.
