???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

The thing I love about India the most is how diverse it is. It’s diverse in its people, its cultures, its food, and even its landscapes and geography. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India. I spent two weeks exploring the wonders of these states back in March of 2019 and I want to take you along on my adventures. Let’s go explore northeast India!

After an insane and jam-packed day that saw me leave from Guwahati in Assam, ride to Shillong in Meghalaya, have breakfast at Iewduh Market, have a Khasi thali for lunch, do some shopping at Police Bazaar, trek up to Shillong Peak, and have an unbelievable haircut and massage experience, my day still wasn’t over! Now it was time for dinner and I had a major hankering for some delicious Shillong street food!

My buddy Paul from Travel with Paul took me on a nighttime Indian street food tour of Police Bazaar. There was so much to see and try in this bustling market. Street food isn’t as big here as it is in other parts of India, and can really only be found at night. I was so excited to start!

I started with a chicken drumstick, which cost 120 rupees/$1.71 U.S. My boy Paul is allergic to chicken, so he couldn’t have any. It looked so good! It came with onions on it and some chutney on the side. It was a delicious, crispy, and juicy barbecued chicken with lots of amazing smoky flavor! It was really fatty and tasted even better with the chutney. One of the best barbecued chickens I’ve ever had!

Then we moved on to some grilled, skewered pork stomach. It’s charred and juicy and really salty. It was almost pure fat, but it was delicious fat! Then I tried it with some chutney and lemon. It was like a different world! It was the most delicious barbecued pork ever!

Next, we moved on to Food on Wheels, a food truck that sells both Indian and Chinese food. There, I got some chicken momos with hot sauce, which were still boiling hot. The texture was amazing! The chicken was really moist and felt like it had been pulled. The sauce wasn’t too hot, but was delicious. A plate of six momos cost only 40 rupees/$0.57 U.S.

Next was Chow, or Chinese noodles. It contained dry, thin noodles and some chicken. I loved the way the onions were mixed in. But I needed a kick, so I added a green hot sauce that was really spicy and was like a green chili sauce with meat. The dish reminded me of glass noodles from Thailand!

Then, on the way back to my Airbnb, we stopped at another food truck for some nasi goreng, which is a traditionally Indonesian fried rice dish. After a ride on Paul’s scooter, we arrived at the Griddle Club. They made me some nasi goreng. The difference between Indonesian nasi goreng and the version here in Shillong is that this version is made with chicken instead of seafood. It came with prawn chips, fresh vegetables on the side, and a fried egg on top. I popped the yolk, mixed into the rice, and dove in!

While I was eating, there was a car accident right behind me! The nasi goreng was delicious and had a southeast Asian feel to it. The prawn chips were really nice. They were perfect for scooping up the rice and popping the whole thing in my mouth! I loved the combination of the egg and the rice, and the shrimp paste was out of this world! This was one of my favorite fried rice dishes ever!

What an amazing conclusion to an epic day! I hope you enjoyed coming along with me on my incredible street food tour of Police Bazaar. If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food content!

Shillong BREAKFAST STREET FOOD Tour of Police Bazaar - Pork, Puri & Egg Toast | Shillong, Meghalaya,

Before I traveled to the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India in March of 2019, I did tons of research to learn about these unique areas of the country. But no amount of research could prepare me for what I found when I got there. From beautiful national parks to picturesque landscapes to some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, this is a truly special part of India. I can’t wait to share more of it with you. Come along with me as I explore northeast India!

On the morning of my third day in Meghalaya, my friend Paul and I linked back up to have breakfast in Police Bazaar. We’d be eating a mix of traditional Indian and traditional Khasi food. We started our day at a viewpoint overlooking Shillong, where you can see the plateaus and Himalayas in the distance on sunny days.

It was a chilly start to the day, but it was warming up. We arrived at Police Bazaar and immediately headed to the street vendors. The street food stalls here are open from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., so come early if you want to have breakfast. I couldn’t wait to try the food there. I was hungry!

We started with some puri sabzi, which consisted of a deflated puri and an amazing-looking squash sabzi with onion. Break the puri with one hand if you can, put some sabzi on it, and just go to town on it. It was slightly spicy and the puri was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sabzi was also nice and oily. The oil takes it to the next level! It’s phenomenal and only costs 20 rupees/$0.29 U.S.!

Then it was time to have some traditional Khasi food! I went with pork salad, pork innards, pork fat, chicken, and meatballs with some chapati. I broke off a piece and filled it with the organ meat. It was so juicy and kind of gelatinous. It reminded me of brain. Next was the pork salad, which contains onions and potato. It’s like a Russian salad but with pork. I’d had it several times already, but I could never get tired of it!

Then I went with the pork fat, which was so flavorful and gelatinous. It was like pork Jell-O! This one was a little tougher and reminded me of bacon. Then I went with the meatball, which was dense and rich in amazing flavor. It was so amazing! One of the best meatballs I’d ever had!

Next, I tried the chicken, which has a lot of bones in it. You have to struggle a bit to get into it. It was a little chewy, but the amount of bones in it was too much for me. I preferred the pork. I love the pork in Meghalaya is unreal. It’s very hard to find in other parts of India, but it’s extremely common in Meghalaya. It’s so good!

Then I had some chicken thigh that was bathed in a delicious curry, followed by the jadoh, or rice with pork. Then I tried the pickled bamboo shoots with chilies. I love the taste of bamboo. The pickled version is a little potent and the chili adds some heat.

Next was the dried, smoked beef curry. The curry was light but rich, while the meat was a lot like tender beef jerky. It contained lots of spices but wasn’t spicy!

Everything I had came to just 130 rupees/$1.86 U.S., so it’s on the more expensive side for this area of India, but is still pretty inexpensive for the amount of food you get.

I wanted to get more food after that, so I got some pitha, which is a pounded rice patty with coconut and sugar. It was a little different from the Assamese version I’d had. It was airy and thick and was sweet like a dessert! I love coconut! It was super filling and very tasty.

Then I had some chai, which is my favorite thing to drink in India! It contained ginger and milk and wasn’t too hot. I hadn’t seen it much in Assam and Meghayala, so I was happy to find some. It was very creamy and frothy!

I finished up with some egg toast, which is a piece of toast cooked into super fluffy eggs with onion, spices, and chilies. I’d had some in Kolkata and loved it. The bread wasn’t super toasted, but it was still so good! And it was spicy!

I hope you guys enjoyed coming with me to Police Bazaar for breakfast in Shillong! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

SHILLONG Food Tour - JADOH (Meghalaya Style Biryani) + Barbeque Chicken + Traditional KHASI Dinner

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

This special video marks the beginning of our food explorations across the North Eastern states of India, the region that is pleasantly rich and diverse in topography, demography and culture.

Our North Eastern food trail began from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong, whose breathtaking natural beauty has catapulted it into a popular tourist destination for all the nature loving travelers. Due to the picturesque beauty and pleasant climate, this city was once referred to as the Scotland of the East.

In this culinary expedition of ours, we have until now covered a minuscule of the pristine expanse but we soon intend to discover more.

Shillong is a place that is mostly inhabited by the Khasi tribe, hence the local food scene here is primarily dominated by the Khasi delicacies. So join us on this exciting food tour across Shillong. In this venture we were joined by two zealous food explorers Lynty and Sayan.

The episode covers the brief street food trail in Police bazaar and also the traditional Khasi meal at Linty’s place. Our journey began with a lovely drive from Guwahati to Shillong.

On reaching Shillong we directly went to join our hosts Lynty and Sayan who were waiting for us at Police Bazaar. It is a prominent shopping, hangout and food hub in the capital city. The place was crowded yet very lively. We straightaway walked up to the food area lined up with numerous stalls selling local and popular street food fares.

Here Lynti introduced us to the most ubiquitous Khasi delicacy called the Jado. Few minutes into the walk and we realised how much did the locals love the dish. It is basically rice cooked with meat and few other ingredients. Unlike the usual case here they had cooked the rice separately without meat and while serving it they topped it with a chicken or pork curry. It was simple yet super delicious.

Next we tried some freshly barbecued chicken which is another local favourite. The neatly defined flavours of pure succulent meat made it an irresistible snacks.Further, while ambling down the lanes of the marketplace, we stopped by a pakoda seller to try some hot pakodas. This gentleman from Bihar has been selling these humble fritters for the past 40 plus years. They were quite toothsome.

After that brief street food trail that was interspersed with crazy downpours, we reached Lynti’s house to savour some traditional Khasi dishes for dinner. We were welcomed by her warm and genial family. This was followed by an enlightening conversation about the culture and way of life.
As the clock announcing dinnertime, we couldn’t contain our excitement to try the meal. The spread included Jastem, Shriew, Doh sniang Trykhong, Dohneiiong, Tungtap, tamarind pickle etc. No wonder the meal cooked with so much affection and care was scrumptious. We particularly loved the Doh sniang trykhong which was a simple dish made with smoked pork and pumpkin. The best part was of the delicacies were the clean flavours of the major components i.e. the meat or vegetables.

Post meal it was time to have Kwai. Kwai refers to areca nuts. The tradition of eating areca nuts with or without betel leaves is an integral part of the Khasi tradition. So in Shillong you will find every other person chewing kwai. People offer it as a mark of friendship, hospitality and honour so refusing the kwai is considered to be an ill etiquette.

Soon it was time to convey our gratitude and bid goodbye to our generous hosts for the yummy food, warm hospitality and the useful insights. With the beginning done right, we were hopeful for the thrilling journey ahead.

UNREAL Meghalaya STREET FOOD - Blood Sausage & SMOKED Pork and Beef | Mylliem, Meghalaya, India

???? PAUL:
???? WATCH: Meghalaya Paratha's
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

The trip I took to Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India in March of 2019 is one of the most memorable in my eleven years of traveling the world. Even though this was my third trip to India, I was blown away because this part of the country is so different from the big cities I explored further south on other trips. I’m so excited to share my adventures there with you guys. Come join me as I continue exploring Assam and Meghalaya!

After an incredible day trip the took me from the Meghalaya capital of Shillong to the gorgeous waterfalls, bustling markets, and magnificent living root bridges of Cherrapunjee, my new friend Paul and I made the journey back to Shillong. On the way, we got some mouthwatering Meghalaya street food that blew my mind!

We pulled into Mylliem, India, a village about 45 minutes outside of Shillong. There are lots of unique foods here, including smoked pork, smoked beef, and blood sausage. The pork in Meghalaya is unreal, the best pork I’ve ever had in my life. I couldn’t wait to try more amazing dishes from this part of India!

We explored a bit to see the different foods being offered before stopping in a pickling shop to try four different types of pickle. There were smoked meats hanging from the ceiling.

We started with our pork momo with a spicy sauce and onions. It practically fell apart when I picked it up and the sauce was really hot! It was light on the pork and the onions were more prominent, but it was delicious!

Then I went with the blood sausage, which came wrapped in a banana leaf. I dove right in. It was absolutely heavenly. I love the taste of blood sausage. It’s smoky, bloody, and soft and came with spring onions. It was also gelatinous, but not in the same way that fat is. I’d found blood sausage to be pretty rare in India. The only other place I’d had it in the country was Little Tibet in Delhi, so I was very happy to come across some again.

Then we moved on to dried, smoked pork, along with beef, pickles, chutneys, rice, and more. I started with some pork soup with rice, which was very juicy and hot! I took a sip of chai to rinse the heat out of my mouth and then moved on to the smoked pork, which looked similar to bacon. With the onions and peppers, it was like a tough bacon stir-fry!

Next was the beef, which was hard and a little too tough for me, though I liked the onions in it. I ate the onions and peppers around it. The beef was so hard I almost broke a tooth on it!

Next was the thali, which contained bamboo shoots, potatoes mixed with carrots and beets, wild apple, peppers, and tamarind. The tamarind was nice and strong and a little sweet, but there was a seed inside. The dehydrated wild apple was strong and dense, but good! Next, I tried a chili that wound up being pretty mild, but it still opened up my sinuses!

Then I tried the pickled bamboo shoots, which were pungent! The potatoes, carrots, and beets were very phenomenal, while the tree tomato chutney was very light and had no spice, while the fish chutney was very strong and salty. It was also spicy! It reminded me of Thai fish paste! Next was the fermented beans, which was super nice and almost reminded me of peanut butter. I loved it!

Then I tried roasted beef, which was like a big meatball with a nice sauce on it. I followed that with wild mushroom chutney with pepper. It was earthy and had very little spice. It was my favorite! The tomato salad with onions contained a strong herb, but it was also super refreshing. I loved it!

Then I learned about the process the people here use to smoke their meat and got the chance to watch them do it.

The food was phenomenal, but now it was time to get back to Shillong!

I hope you enjoyed coming along with me to get dinner in Mylliem! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. Also please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food content!

Meghalaya STREET FOOD & Chinese Food - Blood Sausage, Chow & Paneer Chili | Meghalaya, India

???? PAUL:
???? WATCH: First Impressions Meghalaya
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

In March of 2019, I took an amazing, two-week trip to the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India. I had the time of my life exploring the incredible culture, fascinating history, beautiful sites, and heavenly food of this region of the country. It truly blew me away. I’m so excited that I get to share my adventures there with you guys! Join me as I explore the marvels and wonders of northeast India!

My fourth day in Meghalaya was my busiest yet, with a day trip away from Shillong that took me to Malwynnong (the cleanest village in Asia) in the morning and the Dawki area near the border with Bangladesh in the afternoon. But my day wasn’t over yet! I still needed to get some dinner on our way back to Shillong!

I could not wait to eat some more blood sausage and I was really looking forward to having some Chinese food. Chinese cuisine is big in northeast India, so I was so excited about trying some. It would take us an hour to get back to the town where the blood sausage is and another 30-40 minutes to get to the Chinese food.

On the way, I couldn’t help but marvel at the hilly, green, and mountainous landscapes. I certainly understand why the British nicknamed it the Scotland of the East when they arrived here! The only place I’d ever visited that had comparable landscapes was the sky kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa.

We stopped to get a stunning look at the sunset over the foggy mountains and valleys below. Then we continued on and finally arrived in the village of Laitlyngkot. I targeted the blood sausage stall, which many people from Shillong travel for an hour to eat! The woman chops it up on a banana leaf and serves it for 70 rupees/$1 U.S. for 250 grams.

The blood sausage is served with onion as well as chili and pepper. It was hot and juicy and so spicy! I could taste the intestines and blood. It was so good! I couldn’t get enough of it! It was addictive!

As we traveled on, Paul taught me a bit about Meghalaya, including its name origins and the three major tribes of the state and where they can be found.

Even though I stuffed myself with blood sausage earlier, I was still pumped about having some Chinese food in the town of Mylliem. I hadn’t had any in Meghalaya yet and I couldn’t wait to dig into some!

We stopped at Soilyna Huts Restaurant in Mylliem for dinner, which sells Indian, Chinese, and Khasi food. The restaurant was really big and had lots of dining halls. We went with some pork chow (pork with Chinese noodles) and paneer chili (my favorite Indo-Chinese dish) with peppers and spring onion.

I started with the chow. The noodles were really fine, like glass noodles. They were tasty and oily, with some fatty pork and delicious Chinese flavors. I could feel the fattiness of the pork permeating the noodles. The pork is what makes them! I added some spicy sauce, which wasn’t too hot. It was similar to a sriracha. The noodles reminded me of wok-fried noodles I’d get from a Chinese food restaurant. They transported me back to my time in China!

Then I started on the paneer chili. The cottage cheese had a nice, red, glazy sauce on it. It tasted kind of like duck sauce. I went for a hot pepper next and then dug back into the chow. Then I tried the cow with some of the spicy momo sauce. It wasn’t too hot but it opened my sinuses! Then it was Paul’s turn to dig in.

I finished up with some red tea before we hit the road for another 25 minutes and arrived back in Shillong. What an amazing way to cap off my adventures in Meghalaya. I had the time of my life there! I have to thank my boy Paul for making this incredible adventure possible. I would have been lost without him!

I hope you enjoyed coming along with me on my Meghalaya street food and Chinese food dinner! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food videos from around the world!

AMAZING Meghalaya KHASI THALI 13 Items in Police Bazaar + Shillong Peak | Shillong, Meghalaya, India

???? PAUL:
???? WATCH: Indian's Secret Vineyards
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

When I traveled to northeast India in March of 2019, I was thrilled to find myself in a stunningly beautiful area of the country that I didn’t even know existed just a few months earlier. Everything here is so different from other parts of India. Come along with me as I explore northeast India!

As my first day in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, continued, my friend Paul took me to eat a Khasi thali. This thali is so different from every other thali I’ve ever had, including the ones I had in Assam! Then we headed up to Shillong Peak to get some insane views of the city!

We made our way to Police Bazaar, which is where the restaurant is located. Police Bazaar is the most commercial hub in Shillong. You can buy clothing, street food, accessories, shoes, and more.

The restaurant Paul took me to was very unique. It was pretty small and all the booths face the same direction. We ordered our thali, which contained lots of non-veg dishes including chicken and pork.

I started with the jadoh, which is a Khasi rice with pork that is reminiscent of a risotto or paella. The pork is pretty fatty! Then I tried a fresh tomato salad with green beans, followed by a radish salad, which was crunchy and reminded me of bamboo. I liked it a lot!

Next, I went with the pork salad. It’s like a Russian salad with potato, onion, and pork. I loved it! It’s fatty and kind of tastes like a ceviche. I also loved the fattiness of the pork curry.

The dal mash was very nice and super light, with no heat to it. The fermented fish chutney was very potent, fishy, and spicy. The mint chutney was amazing with the rice. The mint was so strong but so good! The banana flower chutney was like a plantain mash. The mashed potatoes were light and contained some onion. The mashed potato with cauliflower I tried next had a creamy element that I liked a lot.

Then I went with the pork fat, which was delicious and gelatinous. I also loved the dense pork ball. The next dish was chicken curry with potatoes. The curry was insane! I loved it so much! Then I went with a pepper. It took me a few bites for the heat to kick in, but when it did, it was intense! While I cooled my mouth down with some water and rice, it was Paul’s turn to try!

The next thing I tried was a fermented soybean sauce, which looked super rich and delicious. I tried it with some of the jadoh. It was really rich and earthy. I had something similar to it in Japan! But for me, the star of the meal was the chicken curry. It was so good, I had to thank the owner, who was in love with me!

After our meal, we visited the bazaar, where Paul showed me a beautiful handmade shawl. After a bit of bargaining, I bought four in total for the women in my family. They’re great for winter days!

Before we set off for Shillong Peak, we went to get a double espresso with ice. I got it the way I like it, with no sugar. It was perfect! Exactly what I needed to continue on with my day! Our total came to 210 rupees, or about $4 U.S.

Then it was time for Shillong Peak, but we hit a huge traffic jam! It was super tight but we squeezed through the cars and pedestrians. The drive by scooter took about 15 minutes. It got chilly on the way, so I recommend dressing warm when you come to Shillong!

After not being able to visit the peak due to me being a foreigner and the ongoing situation with Pakistan, Paul took me to another area of the peak with great views. We got out and walked past a Catholic graveyard, which reminded me of a cemetery I’d visited in Guatemala because of the colors.

The landscape and greenery of this area felt very European. We reached the lookout point, but the view of the city wasn’t great because it was kind of gloomy. It was still beautiful!

Then we headed to a café, we got an insane view of Shillong! It’s gorgeous! This part of India is such a different world. Then we went back to Police Bazaar to get a beer. The lounge offered an amazing view of the bazaar below. Instead of a beer, I got some smooth Indian whiskey. It was so good!

Shillong (Bara Bazar) Food Tour - Breakfast Walk + BIG Momo

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

► More street food in Meghalaya:

Market visits are always fun and exciting, so after the Police Bazaar food tour, we were keen to check out the food scenario at Lewduh market in Shillong. Pronounced as “yoh doh”, it is one of the oldest and largest wholesale markets in the city where one can find fresh stocks of vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, spices and other food items. Majority of the fresh stocks are supplied by the local farmers. The place also has a section for handicrafts made by the local artisans. This sprawling marketplace is full of narrow alleys leading up and down, that look the same to the unfamiliar eyes.

We reached here early in the morning with our host Lynti, just when the market was opened for business. Soon the shops and stalls appeared to be spilling over and the congested alleys were full of vendors, porters and customers. We were thrilled to discover what the locals ate on a daily basis.

We started our food tour by purchasing various kinds of rice cakes from a roadside vendor. Home made rice cakes are the most popular khasi breakfast snacks that are mostly consumed with tea. They are a wholesome and convenient source of energy for the industrious populace out here. The ones that we bought included the Pusaw, Pumaloi and the Pukhlein. Pusaw or plain steamed sticky rice cake was bland in taste and is supposed to be eaten with tea or milk. The Pumaloi or steamed red rice cake was bland as well. But both tasted good with sweet tea. The Pukhlein which was a deep fried rice flour and jaggery based snacks, was quite delicious. It had a sharp flavour of the mustard oil in which it was fried.

Another popular stuff that local people preferred for breakfast was flattened rice soaked in tea. We have eaten it with many things like milk or curd but never with tea. It satiates the craving for tea and fills up your tummy.

We also visited one of the oldest Jadoh shops in the market. It was bustling with people enjoying Jadoh and other traditional Khasi dishes. After ambling up and down the narrow lanes lined with shops and stalls in the different sections of the market we finally arrived at the center of Lewduh that houses the largest vegetable market of the region. The sight was no less than a marvel. Wherever your eyes went, you can see different kinds of vegetables that came from local farms. They were all fresh and colourful.

One of the most notable things about this market was that most of the traders here were women. Attired in their simple traditional outfits, they can be seen chatting, laughing, chewing kwai and selling their fares.

INCREDIBLE Home-Cooked KHASI FOOD at a Shillongan Local's Home | Shillong, Meghalaya, India

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

When I traveled to northeast India in March of 2019, I had no idea it would be one of the most amazing trips of my life. But from the moment I arrived in Assam and Meghalaya, I was blown away by everything around me, from the people to the culture to the food to the breathtaking scenery. This place is so special, and I’m thrilled that I get to share it with you. Come along with me as I explore the wilds and wonders of northeast India!

On my third day in Meghalaya, I headed out to see some local attractions and then have a home-cooked Khasi meal! Join us as I explore more of beautiful Meghalaya!

My friend Dickie from Wild Heart Campers would be taking me around for the day. I couldn’t wait to see a local canyon. We rode through a youth-centric area of Shillong that’s full of college students to get there. There was lots of traffic! But it wasn’t long before we left the city behind and entered more hilly, rural environments. It reminded me of northern Scotland and Lesotho with the winding road.

Then we arrived at a beautiful, hazy canyon. It was like a smaller and greener version of the Grand Canyon! It was stunning. I could see three or four villages nestled within the canyon. We found a lookout point that extends over the canyon, which reminded me of Table Mountain in South Africa. Just be careful when you go there! People have died here trying to get selfies for Instagram.

I met a man selling some delicious minty tea as we admired the view. During the rainy season, the entire canyon would be lush and vivid green, but it would also be much more treacherous and slippery.

From there, we visited a large hut with a bamboo roof. The pillars are made from the trunks of massive trees. A dance party is held in front of the hut once a year. A miniature stadium faces the hut. Here, the queen and other spectators have a great view of the dancing.

After 25 minutes of driving, we arrived back in Shillong. The city is growing a lot, so it’s seeing an influx of people. Dickie and I met up with my buddy Paul, who took us to his friend Jordan’s house, where we’d have a home-cooked Khasi meal. I couldn’t wait to eat!

After meeting Jordan, we went inside, met the dog, and prepared to eat our traditional Khasi feast! Jordan’s family had prepared an amazing-looking spread for us!

I started with the mincemeat beef patty, which was perfectly fried and delicious. I tried it with the wild flower pickle. It was different! Then I went with the super light dal with rice. Then I tried the bean salad, which was delicious! It had a sesame curry on it and was incredible. I took the chili from the serving bowl. It was outstanding!

Then I tried the pork, which was juicy, tender, and fatty. It was covered in the same sesame curry as the bean salad. There was a little bit of sweetness to it and was almost like chicharron, or pork rinds!

Then I had the dried beef, which was like a nice angus steak with curry. It was chewy like jerky! Next was the dried fish chutney with chili, which I put in some lettuce. It was spicy and salty with a potent dry fish taste!

Then I went with the bamboo shoot pickle, which was pungent and had a really great texture. Everything was so fresh and delicious! It was so different from America, where everything is frozen.

What an incredible feast! I have to thank Jordan and his mom for preparing this amazing meal.

I hope you enjoyed coming with me to see the beautiful canyon and joining me for this amazing Khasi feast! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food videos!

INCREDIBLE Home-Cooked KHASI FOOD at a Shillongan Local's Home | Shillong, Meghalaya, India

Top 10 Indian Street Foods in Meghalaya, India | The BEST INDIAN Street Food in Meghalaya

???? WATCH: Top 10 Indian Street Foods in Delhi
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

Before I traveled to the state of Meghalaya in northeastern India back in March of 2019, I had heard that the cuisine there was very different from the food in the rest of India. They weren’t kidding! I was blown away by the unique food there and want to share my 10 favorites. These are the top 10 Indian street foods in Meghalaya, India!

1. Pork Feast (Nat Khasi Restaurant in Iewduh Market)

Life in Shillong revolves around Iewduh Market, and one of the best places to grab some food is the market’s Nat Khasi Restaurant. Their Jadoh, Dohklieh, beef liver, and pork intestine sausage are all outstanding!

2. Khasi Thali (Trattoria Restaurant in Police Bazar)

When you visit Police Bazar, stop inside Trattoria Restaurant to try the rice-and-pork dish called Jadoh, as well as the creamy Dohklieh, light and mild dal mash, fermented soybean sauce, spicy fish chutney, mint chutney, pork balls, and pork fat. I was in pork heaven!

3. Momos & Chow (Police Bazar at Night)

Return to Police Bazar at night, when the street food vendors open shop, to try the juicy pulled chicken momos with mild red sauce and the flavorful chow with chicken and onion. Add green chili sauce for a spicy kick!

4. Dohklieh and Pork Innards (Police Bazar Breakfast)

If you visit Police Bazar in the morning, you’ll find street food vendors selling traditional dishes for breakfast, including the Russian salad-like Dohklieh and meatballs and pork innards that you can eat with chapati. They’re fatty, juicy, and full of flavor!

5. Pitha (Police Bazar Breakfast)

One of my favorite sweet dishes in Meghalaya is the Pitha you can find at Police Bazar in the morning. It’s a thick, airy, pounded rice patty that contains coconut and sugar. It’s sweet and is bursting with coconut flavor!

6. Home-Cooked Feast (Jordan’s House)

When you travel solo and rely solely on locals like I do, you often have some amazing experiences you’d never have otherwise, like getting invited into a new friend’s house for a home-cooked meal. My guide’s friend’s mom whipped up an amazing feast that included mouthwatering minced beef patties, green beans, fatty pork with sesame curry, dried beef, and more!

7. Putharo with Chicken Curry (R. Kharbangar Tea Stall)

As you head south to the Cherrapunjee area, stop in the town of Mylliem to eat at R. Kharbangar Tea Stall. The chewy pork intestines with liver were amazing, but the tender chicken curry with putharo was the highlight! Letting the curry soak into the putharo was the best part!

8. Prawn Maggi (Mawkdok)

On the ride to Cherrapunjee, make another stop near Mawkdok Valley, where you’ll find a restaurant selling an instant noodle dish called Prawn Maggi. It’s very flavorful and full of spices, and is even better when you add some of the spicy sauce that’s provided!

9. River Hut Feast (Shnongpdeng)

When you visit the Dawki area, be sure to stop by the huts along the Umngot River in Shnongpdeng. From the light and fishy river fish curry to the moist and buttery beef curry, this meal is unreal. The earthy jackfruit, bony fish fry, spicy tomato chutney, fruity dal, and bitter jungle vegetable were also spectacular!

10. Blood Sausage (Laitlyngkot)

Blood sausage is one of my favorite foods in the world and some of the best I’ve ever had was from a street food stall in the town of Laitlyngkot. It’s served with onions, chili, and peppers and is made of hot, spicy meat with an amazing texture!

I hope you enjoyed checking out my top 10 Indian street foods in Meghalaya, India!

NE Shillong Indian STREET FOOD tour Police Bazaar Pork, Momos and Jadoh | Shillong, Meghalaya, India

Join us on this journey as we enjoy some of the lip smacking NE Indian street foods of Shillong at Police Bazaar.

Meghalaya, state of India, located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bounded by the Indian state of Assam to the north and northeast and by Bangladesh to the south and southwest. The state capital is the hill town of Shillong, located in east-central Meghalaya.
Meghalaya—alaya (“abode”) and megha (“of the clouds”)—occupies a mountainous plateau of great scenic beauty.
The state's territory constituted the Khasi-Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills districts of Assam until 1972. Most of the terrain is hilly and experiences heavy rainfall during monsoons. Meghalaya is home to three major tribal populations - Khasis, Garos and Jaintias.

A couple of days back we had the opportunity to visit this beautiful state and explore some parts of the state and this is a small representation of what Meghalaya holds.
Detailed vlogs from Meghalaya will follow soon, every Wednesday & Sunday at 10 AM IST.

We shared a common passion for #travel to explore and experience the different cultures of the world and started traveling as husband and wife duo. In our opinion, the true experience of travel lies way beyond the tourist bucket list spots and into the lifestyle of the locals - their dresses, their food habits, the common folklores and their vibe.
We have met lots of like minded people, who want to roam around the world but are tied down by their day to day responsibilities. We started Bonkers Note to encourage and help people plan their travel by #vlogging our journeys and sharing our experiences. Best Khasi Food-Meghalaya- You&IArtsCafe

What's your favourite cousine in India? My new favourite is Khasi - simple and yummy
.
Khasi cuisine is very minimalistic. The meat is smoked and the fish is fermented. In fact fermentation seems to be a popular procedure for rice and liquor too. They barely use any spices except onions, ginger, sesame seeds paste, turmeric, and some mustard oil. The cuisine favours the meat lovers. But the vegetarians will find some local dishes too. Dal and some stir fried vegetables is a staple here.
