A Tourist's guide to Honiara, Solomon Islands

Part 2 of my South Pacific trip.

From Port Moresby, I fly into the Solomon Island's hectic, pot-holed capital Honiara. I walk about seeing the main sights, then catch a taxi into the hills to see the American and Japanese War Memorials.

Honiara isn't pretty, but its safe enough.

Solomon Islands Travel

Welcome to the Solomon Islands.a very special place… swaying palms, white sandy beaches, warm crystal clear water home to thousands of reef fish, a sacred place, a place where you can pay tribute to past heroes and learn a little of their battles. A place where you can cross a lagoon that you will never forget. A place where you can stay and eat in five star luxury or get away from it all in a home stay over water. A place that embraces the future but still holds on to the past and it’s traditional culture.
The Solomon Islands, Islands adrift in time, A place time passed by… however you describe the Solomons the Solomons are so Solomons so different.

A moment in the Solomon Islands | Travel Video

This short film was shot during five days in the Solomon Islands, mainly around Munda and Gizo at the edge of the Roviana Lagoon. I was documenting a scientific expedition and was only able to shoot alongside my main task.

I would love to come back for a longer and deeper exploration of this magical country. the Solomon Islands are a very special place and the untouched natural beauty there is second to none. Definitely, one of the (still) often overlooked jewels in the Pacific!

Lost $11,000 in Video Gear & Almost My Life: My Solomon Islands Survival Story

Our adventure in the Solomon Islands was a wake-up call. We were one of the first big tour groups to visit since the pandemic and what we experienced was a shocker. During our trip, we encountered major safety challenges and even experienced a traumatic event. We were lucky to survive due to the lack of proper rescue infrastructure. Despite our meeting with the tourism office, their promises to address the situation have gone unfulfilled, and it's unacceptable. I also want to emphasize that GPS devices are unreliable in this region, further highlighting the urgent need for the local government to establish a dependable rescue system if the tourism industry wants to thrive. It's time for the industry to take action and ensure that tourists are protected. We deserve to have peace of mind when traveling, and it's time for our voices to be heard.

Have you ever seen dark-skinned people with bright blonde hair?... Me either, until I arrived in my 154th country -- THE SOLOMON ISLANDS!!

I just discovered that 5-10% of Solomon Islanders have natural blonde hair, and it's the only place in the world (Melanesia) where you can see dark-skinned people with natural blonde hair. It's absolutely amazing and I can't get enough of these beautiful faces!

Solomon Islands 2023

Well, after a three year postponement, due to you know what, we finally made it to the Solomon Islands. But not without a few dramas on the way. First thing we found upon arrival at Honiara airport, was that our rod tube had sustained a massive impact. Later, when we arrived at our accommodation we discovered that three of our rods were damaged and unuseable. Which pretty much limited our fishing to trolling lures.
The other little drama, which was a little unnerving at the time, was shortly after takeoff in the Twin Otter to Seghe. We'd been airborne for about five minutes or so, when the crew turned the plane back to Honiara airport. We circled for a while then landed, turned out the radio had stopped working. Took about an hour to fix before we were on our way again.

Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide

Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide

Papua New Guinea is an island nation in Oceania. A country of immense cultural and biological diversity, it’s known for its beaches and coral reefs. Inland are active volcanoes, granite Mt. Wilhelm, dense rain forest and hiking routes like the Kokoda Trail. There are also traditional tribal villages, many with their own languages.

Papua New Guinea is just to the south of the equator and has a tropical climate. In the highlands, though, temperatures are distinctly cool. The (very) wet season runs from about December to March. The best months for trekking are June to September.

The Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands in the South Pacific, has many WWII-era sites. Guadalcanal, a province and one of the archipelago’s largest islands, honors fallen Allied soldiers at its U.S. War Memorial. Guadalcanal is also home to the nation’s capital, Honiara, whose bustling Central Market showcases the islands’ produce and traditional handicrafts.

Honiara, on the island of Guadalcanal, is the capital city of the Solomon Islands. Its buzzing Central Market sells local produce and handicrafts. Traditional frescoes adorn the conical National Parliament building. The National Museum has WWII relics and cultural artifacts. The Botanical Gardens includes an orchid house. Outside the city, the waters of the Mataniko Falls thunder down a rocky cliff into a canyon.
The American War Memorial has descriptions on marble slabs of local battles fought during the Guadalcanal Campaign of WWII. Built by Japanese veterans, the Solomons Peace Memorial Park commemorates those who died. West of the city, Vilu War Museum has memorials and WWII aircraft. Nearby, Bonegi Beach, with 2 sunken wartime vessels, is a popular site for diving and snorkeling. East, Bloody Ridge is a hill defended by U.S. troops against the Japanese in 1942. It has a small, pyramid-shaped U.S. memorial. With views over the area, nearby Mount Austen was a strategic WWII site.

Port Moresby is the sprawling capital of Papua New Guinea, a country north of Australia. The vast anthropological collection at the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery includes masks and carved wooden poles. Nearby, Parliament House is modeled on a traditional house of worship. Its entrance is dominated by a large, colorful mosaic featuring national motifs. There are views over Port Moresby Harbour from Paga Hill.
Nearby traditional villages include Koki, built on stilts in a bay. To the north, Port Moresby Nature Park combines botanical gardens, featuring many orchids, with a zoo housing tree kangaroos, parrots and reptiles. The Bomana War Cemetery holds the graves of many Papua New Guinean, Australian and other soldiers who died during WWII. Hikers are drawn to Varirata National Park in the east, with its resident wallabies and birds of paradise. Nearby, the town of Sogeri is at one end of the long, mountainous Kokoda Track, which passes through dense rainforest. Diving is popular on coral reefs off the coast.

Solomon Islands | stunning travel destination, things to do | Guadalcanal Honiara Western Province

Solomon Islands! Guadalcanal and Western Province were so amazingly beautiful it really defies words. Returning to the Solomon Islands after 20 years away, it was good to see the “Happy Isles” again. Still untouched and a totally underrated gem of the South Pacific. Hopefully this compilation of drone, timelapse, GoPro and phone footage does it justice.

Visiting family - the ‘wantoks’ - at Tetere was a great chance to reforge old Sikaiana bonds and new friendships. You can’t help but be fully immersed in the Solomon Islands music and dancing, swimming, snorkelling, paddling canoes, carvings and art, the volleyball and the yum food, like green coconuts, cut-nut, banana pudding, and fried reef fish.

And what an experience to sleep on an uninhabited island under tarps and stars. Cook what you catch on an open fire, whilst lightning storms flash across the horizon and the Milky Way galaxy spirals overhead.

Thanks to the team at Fatboys Resort near Gizo in the Western Province of the Solomons for a lovely stay. The resort is just a short skip across the water from Kasolo Island, aka Kennedy Island – named after John F. Kennedy following his stranding on the island during his World War II naval career. The landing clip at Nusatupe airport was taken by my friend Aldrin Rore when he ‘co-piloted’ with captain Geoff Posala.

The prayer song at the end of this video is just one of the typical sounds that you’ll hear drifting across the evening air of the villages all over the Solomon Islands. Hey GPOL kids, thanks for being fun little sports and racing my drone! Lukim iu (Pidgin for goodbye)

Solomon Island Yachter's Travel Guide - What to do in the Solomon Islands

A scattered archipelago of about 1,000 mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls with scenic land and water adventure is what best describes Solomon Island. You can now decide to experience a totally original and authentic culture by traveling to the Solomon Islands.

It's more than just learning about the amazing cultural legacy. You will also get to explore the depths of the blue-green ocean in search of World War two artifacts. Plus, with a population of just over 2,000 people, you will feel like you have plenty of space to explore.

So if you are ready to take a trip of a lifetime, then I see no reason why you shouldn't opt for a yacht cruise on Solomon Island.
