Top 10 Things to See and Do on the Solomon Islands

Get more Tips here!

Taking a trip to the Solomon Islands will be unlike any other vacation you’ve ever experienced. When visiting one of the last untouched destinations in the Pacific, here are 10 things to see and do.

1. See the Traditional Villages
Choose the Kmaga Village experience where you’ll sleep in a beachfront bungalow and receive top-notch hospitality from the villages’ chief and local families.

2. Visit Central Market in Honiara
Head to Central Market in Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal. The stands are lined with crafts made by talented artisans, fresh fish, fruits, and veggies, and handmade souvenirs for you to take back home.

3. Rent a Boat
Various companies offer boat charters, or you can get behind the wheel and navigate the Pacific on your own. But you can always rent a kayak for a few hours and take in the sights as you paddle along the coast.

4. Snorkel in the Bonegis
They are known for being the best places to explore the Solomons’ marine life. Beneath the Pacific, you’ll see beautiful coral reefs, tropical fish, octopus, and maybe even a few shipwrecks from World War II.

5. The Vilu War Museum
The remnants from those battles during WWII with Japanese and American aircrafts can be found at this open-air museum located deep within the forest of Honiara.

6. Go Birdwatching
Grab your binoculars and your long-focus lens camera and make the trek out to Imbu Rano Lodge. Some of the bird species that you’re likely to encounter include parrots, kingfishers, and white-eyes.

7. Travel to Skull Island
Catch a plane to Munda. And take a boat to Vonavona Lagoon to reach the country’s most sacred place: Skull Island. It’s surrounded by human skulls who were killed during the islands’ headhunting days.

8. Chew a Betel Nut
You should take part in some of their traditional ceremonies, including a little bit of betel nut chewing. A betel nut is the brown or yellow seed of the Areca palm, and users have cited a euphoric feeling while chewing on the nut. All we have to say is: chew at your own risk!

9. Hike Up Kolombangara
This volcano last erupted 10,000 years ago. You’ll need a tour guide to lead you along the way and hack away at the overgrown brush that covers the trail. And after two days, you’ll finally reach the crater.

10. Fall in Love With Tenaru Falls
If you enjoy the great outdoors, we guarantee you’ll fall in love with Tenaru Falls near Honiara. To reach the falls, it’s best to rent a 4WD vehicle because it’s no easy trek through the rough and treacherous path. But it’s definitely worth the drive!

Solomon Islands | stunning travel destination, things to do | Guadalcanal Honiara Western Province

Solomon Islands! Guadalcanal and Western Province were so amazingly beautiful it really defies words. Returning to the Solomon Islands after 20 years away, it was good to see the “Happy Isles” again. Still untouched and a totally underrated gem of the South Pacific. Hopefully this compilation of drone, timelapse, GoPro and phone footage does it justice.

Visiting family - the ‘wantoks’ - at Tetere was a great chance to reforge old Sikaiana bonds and new friendships. You can’t help but be fully immersed in the Solomon Islands music and dancing, swimming, snorkelling, paddling canoes, carvings and art, the volleyball and the yum food, like green coconuts, cut-nut, banana pudding, and fried reef fish.

And what an experience to sleep on an uninhabited island under tarps and stars. Cook what you catch on an open fire, whilst lightning storms flash across the horizon and the Milky Way galaxy spirals overhead.

Thanks to the team at Fatboys Resort near Gizo in the Western Province of the Solomons for a lovely stay. The resort is just a short skip across the water from Kasolo Island, aka Kennedy Island – named after John F. Kennedy following his stranding on the island during his World War II naval career. The landing clip at Nusatupe airport was taken by my friend Aldrin Rore when he ‘co-piloted’ with captain Geoff Posala.

The prayer song at the end of this video is just one of the typical sounds that you’ll hear drifting across the evening air of the villages all over the Solomon Islands. Hey GPOL kids, thanks for being fun little sports and racing my drone! Lukim iu (Pidgin for goodbye)

Somewhere in the Solomon Islands, a giant gold mine was discovered in 1997. At the time, the locals had no idea how to properly mine gold... and now, about 3,000 people are making a VERY healthy living doing it.

From what I have seen today, digging for gold all day in this humidity (and heavy rain) is EXTREMELY difficult, but the best ones are making up to $3,000 a day. For all you math wizards, that's over 1 million dollars a year.

Here is the full story of the gold miners in the Solomon Islands. Enjoy!

Solomon Islands: A Breathtaking Adventure

In November 2018, I spent 4 weeks in Gizo, Solomon Islands on a medical elective at the amazing Gizo Hospital.

I had the most amazing time both in and outside of the hospital. This video shares some of the highlights of my trip, as my friends and I travel to different beautiful islands during our spare time.

We spent most of our time snorkelling and enjoying the breathtaking views of the pristine waters surrounding the islands.

List of islands/resorts we visited in order: Fatboys resort, Sanbis resort, and everyone's favourite, Imagination Island where we spent two incredible nights staying on an over-water cottage. We spent the days snorkelling amongst beautiful sea creatures (and sharks!), and we were lucky enough to stargaze during a prominent meteor shower. The clear sky allowed for the stars to shine at its brightest that night on Imagination Island.

I had the experience of a lifetime there both as a medical student and traveller.

If anyone wants more info regarding travelling to Gizo or the Solomons, or a medical student thinking of doing an elective over there (trust me the medical experience was awesome, you get to see and do so much! Unfortunately due to confidentiality I did not film in the hospital), give me a shout and I'll be more than happy to share more of my experience/advice!

My time there couldn't have been anywhere near as incredible as it was without the people there. My friends, the lovely doctors, and of course the amazing local people of the Solomon Islands! Thank you everyone so much for the experience of a lifetime!

PS. I apologise for the shaky, low quality video and rough edit, I have zero experience in editing videos and prior to this trip I bought the cheapest action camera last minute! I have since upgraded to a GoPro though!

The CANOES ???? of the SOLOMON ISLANDS, iconic images! (Pacific Ocean)

Solomon Islands, Pacific Ocean - the iconic canoes, the canoes of the Solomon Islands, views of canoes in the Solomon Islands, Pacific Ocean. Here are some wonderful scenes describing the canoe usage in the beautiful Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The canoe is the main mode of transportation in the Solomon Islands and I am trying here to show you some vivid images on how the canoes are used in the Solomon Islands, the different kinds, sizes, etc.
Solomon Islanders carve these canoes out of mature trees. A variety of woods are used. Each island in the Solomon's has a different name for these canoes including: hola (Mailata Island), mola (Western Province), and nogo (Utupua Island). Paddles are used to propel the canoes through the water.
Many local traditions and ceremonies tended to surround the construction, launching, use, and storage of these craft, though in modern times some of the more “colourful” ones, such as the necessity for human sacrifice at the launching ceremony have been abandoned!

Join us on one of our many epic dive travel Trips:

Scuba Diving Solomon Islands is easily one of the top dive destinations in the world. The sheer variety of Solomon Islands scuba diving will blow your mind.

A group of 20 divers traveled to the Solomon Islands to experience some of the world's best diving. The Solomon Islands is a Remote cluster of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Kona Honu Dive travel group hopped aboard the Bilikiki liveaboard. The liveaboard brought us to many amazing sites.

Solomons islands scuba diving is known for its wide variety of diving opportunities and this time it did not disappoint! We dove gorgeous reefs, massive wrecks, caves, muck, blackwater, drifted walls, clung to seamounts and marveled at macro life. We dove up to 5 times per day. When we weren’t diving we were treated to wonderful meals made from local produce purchased from dugout canoe floating markets. We were brought on shore to visit villages where locals sold wood carvings and performed for us. It was pure magic. Would we go back? That’s an easy yes! So much diving, so little time.

So Solomon's So Different!

So Solomon's So Different!

A scattered archipelago of some 900-odd richly forested mountainous islands and low lying coral atolls, the Solomon
Islands has been attracting international tourism since
1568 when Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendana first sailed into this tucked away corner of the South Pacific.

Little has changed in the Solomon Islands since then and it’s thanks to this that the Solomon Islands have become such a breathtakingly fresh destination for those international travellers hardy enough to get off the beaten track and look for a new and very different experience.
