In this guide, we’ll visit one of the most impressive natural areas of Europe – the Tatra Mountains of Slovakia.
Broad green expanses, an Alpine view with perfect peaks, forests, lakes and rivers all right alongside a delicious and fascinating traditional cuisine, activities for the whole family, hospitable residents, history, and culture.
Our trip will be divided into three popular regions: the High Tatras, the Low Tatras, and the Slovak Garden of Eden.
In each one of these areas, you can visit different natural sites, but in some of them you can also find similar attractions, like water parks, sporting activities, and more, so you’ll be able to decide which of the areas is most important for your visit. Links to all the sites we’ll be visiting will be available here in the description and on the Walking Distance website, so click through and check it out.
The best season for nature trips in the Tatras is summer or the start of fall. If you love skiing, then the snowy winter offers a wide range of sites and attractions.

This short movie was made in a few days trip to the High Tataras in Slovakia.
We Stayed in Starý Smokovec and went for a hike from the Biela Voda – parkovisko parking lot, Just after Tatranská Lomnica to Chata pri Zelenom plese. Than We crossed the ridge to Trojrohe Pleso and Dolina Bielej vody kežmarskej, Trojrohe Pleso from there we went down to Chata Plesnivec and back to the parking lot. On the next day we took a train from Starý Smokovec to Štrbské Pleso and spent the morning there.
Shots were assembled with no voice over or music intending to make you feel you were there.

1. Bratislava 0:04
The largest city in Slovakia, as well as being the capital, Bratislava lies on the River Danube and borders both Austria and Hungary. Come here for a trip to the imposing Bratislava Castle, perched on a plateau above the city and originally built in the 10th century.

2. Slovak caves 0:20
Slovakia is home to almost 2,500 caves, and more are being discovered as time goes on, with some 400 having been explored to date. The entire Slovak Karst region of caves has UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and if you like spelunking then you can’t miss a trip to one of the spectacular caves in the region.
3. Kosice 0:43
The charming city of Košice was named the European Capital of Culture in 2013 and has a cosmopolitan feel to it that expertly mixes the old with the new.
Explore the Old Town where you will find medieval architecture and many of the buildings here are protected.
For a fine example of Gothic style, head to St Elisabeth Cathedral, built in the 14th century, as well as the St Michael Chapel that also dates from the same period.
4. Piestany 1:13
Known predominantly as a spa town, come to Pieštàny for some rest and relaxation as you bathe in the medicinal thermal waters as well as the sulphuric mud, said to cure a number of ills. The spa is located on the aptly named Spa Island and features a range of treatments and baths that make use of the geothermal properties created by mineral deposits from the surrounding mountains.
5. Trencin 1:38
The city of Trencín near the border with the Czech Republic is historic region known for the dominating yet beautiful Trencín Castle that lies atop a rock and which is medieval in style and is split into two sites, the upper and lower parts of the castle.
6. Spis 1:56
The region of Spis lies near to the border with Poland, and is most famed for the mighty Spis Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates from the 12th century.
The castle has its origins in the Romanesque style and is made of stone with fortifications to protect it from marauders.
7. Slovak paradise National Park 2:15
One of nine national parks in Slovakia, Slovak Paradise National Park is the perfect place to take in the local flora and fauna, and has forests, lush park lands, and chilly caves. There are over 300 kilometres of hiking trails to choose from for hikers of all levels of fitness, and bird watching and cycling are also popular pursuits in the park. Perhaps the most beautiful castle in Slovakia, Orava castle is 13th century castle located in the northern part of the country, hidden among the peaks of 4 national parks.
It was a place of lots of movies and fairy tales and is presented on the promo video of Slovakia.

In the central portion of the country, you will find the historic town of Bojnice along the banks of the Nitra River.
There are several notable attractions that can be found in the city.
The oldest zoo in the nation is situated in Bojnice and the local Bojnice Castle is considered to be the most popular castle in Slovakia.
1 day hike across High Tatras national park in Slovakia
One day hike across High Tatra Mountains in Slovakia.
Beautiful scenery, mountain lakes, picturesque waterfalls, saturated green forests and fresh air was the right motivation for us to wake up early and travel by bus to a trailhead on the border with Poland.
Weather was great, our hopes were high even though we were in front of 1160m elevation climb to the Poľský hrebeň (mountain pass). The water stream (Biela voda) lead us through the forest during the whole morning until we reached the first bigger climb. But even than we were accompanied with the smaller streams running from the hill tops. Amazing experience.
Once we get to a higher elevation the temperature dropped bellow 10 degrees just under the Poľský hrebeň. There is actually a lake which is always frozen through the year. Its name is actually Zamrznuté pleso (Frozen lake).
Once we get through the mountain pass, it was much easier hike although in some sections a bit dangerous. It was mostly a rocky terrain with some steep descends fortunately secured by chains.
When we get to the Sliezky dom (mountain shelter) we were pretty tired but the options for refreshment were plenty. Beer, herb tea, alcohol, meals, cakes everything what we have much deserved.
Final descend to the finish line was just a matter of 1 or 2 hours where we could take a tram to a city Poprad which has a great train / bus connections (even an international airport with lines to London).

It took Jozef 18 years to complete the project (1980 ~ 1998).
The entire relief carving measures 8.5 meters wide, 2.5 meters deep and 3 meters high.
This immense carved panorama of Slovakia contains 150 animal and 170 human figures showing the history of Slovakia (past and present) and the traditional ways of life of the Slovak people.

Slovakia Day 2 Part 2
Short break somewhere which looks like something out of the Sound of Music before we stopped for lunch and had a mightily hearty meal.
After that we requested that we be dropped off at the Štrbské Pleso which is a glacial mountain lake. We climbed up a really steep ski slope and up a ski jumping ramp to have a vantage point view of the lake.

Poznáte to. Teplota vonku je hlboko pod nulou, vo výškach hôr ešte nižšie.. Partia vysokohorských nadšených turistov však potrebuje prespať. Vykopú jamy, postavia stany, naštartujú plynovú bombu, na ktorej uvaria čaj, dajú si kus instantného jedla a zažijú noc, na ktorú sa len tak nezabúda....
