Abandoned steps - Benson's Animal Farm

09-11-2009
We went to the abandoned and mysterious Benson's Animal Farm today to see what has become of it 22 years after it was deserted. Overgrown and interesting to see how plants can take over man made roads of asphalt. Also the disintegration of structures over long periods of time is intriguing. A very mysterious place to someone who doesn't know that it used to be an animal park over two decades ago.

Best of Olympia

Visit the site of the First Olympic Games and learn about its glorious history, marvel at the treasures housed at the Olympia Archaeological Museum, and experience the real taste of Greece when you sample olive oils and wines produced at Agriturismo Magna Grecia. Approximately 25 miles east of Katakolon is the site of Ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games. Even though the temples and monuments have disappeared and only the ruins are left, you cannot help but to envision the grandeur of the Temple of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The site was a sanctuary even before the stadium was built and the games took place. The Temple of Hera, the Prytaneion and the Philippeion were also monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous Stadium, the largest of its day, is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage constructed in Roman times. Today, you can stand at the starting line and imagine the roar of the spectators seated in the marble benches as the athletes took their marks on the starting line. Your tour continues to the Olympia Archaeological Museum. Here you'll find the Head of Hera and the superb statue of Hermes of Praxiteles, among many other magnificent pieces found in the area. Admire the sculpted ornaments from the Temple of Zeus and many other priceless pieces. Reboard your coach and drive through picturesque villages and unspoiled scenery to Magna Grecia Farm lying in the heart of a traditional agricultural region. You'll be welcomed with local drinks and homemade snacks. Make sure you try the ouzo, a local liqueur that tastes like licorice. Visit the olive grove and learn the history of the olive tree and the tasty, peppery fruit produced here. You'll see the vineyards and encounter farm animals as well. Immerse yourself in the beauty and charm of this estate and in the delicious flavors of Greek cuisine by sampling a variety of mezes (appetizer dishes) accompanied by local wine. Flirt with Greek culture as you watch a short demonstration of Syrtaki dance, and maybe try a few steps yourself. Opah! Note: There is approximately 1 1/2 miles of walking on even ground, dirt and gravel.

Baby Boomers Tribute "Jungleland USA" 1929-69 Thousand Oaks So Cal

Baby Boomers Tribute Jungleland USA 1929-69 Thousand Oaks So Cal

Jungleland USA was a private zoo, animal training facility, and animal theme park in Thousand Oaks, California, United States, on the current site of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. At its peak the facility encompassed 170 acres (69 ha).

Louis Goebel created Jungleland in 1926 as a support facility for Hollywood. He had been employed at Universal Studios when the studio decided to close its animal facility. Five of the Universal Studio lions formed the nucleus of Goebel's collection. The facility was originally called Goebel's Lion Farm. Soon a wide variety of exotic animals were obtained, trained, and rented to the studios for use in films. The facility later became a theme park, opened to the public in 1929. Wild animal shows entertained thousands in the 1940s and 1950s. Mabel Stark, the lady lion tamer, was featured in these shows; she also doubled for Mae West in the lion-taming scenes in the 1933 film I'm No Angel. The zoo's residents included Leo the Lion, mascot of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio Mister Ed, the talking horse from the television show of the same name; Bimbo the elephant from the Circus Boy television series; and Tamba the chimpanzee, featured in the Jungle Jim movies and television series.

Many TV and movie productions used the park's trained animals, and many productions were filmed there, including Birth of a Nation, Tarzan, Doctor Dolittle, and The Adventures of Robin Hood. It was also featured prominently in an episode of the television show Route 66 (Season 2, Episode 30, A Feat of Strength) which aired May 18, 1962.

The park made headlines in 1966 when a male lion at the compound mauled the young son of actress Jayne Mansfield. A barn fire in 1940 killed 12 of the animals including tigers, camels and elephants.

Jungleland closed in October 1969, because of competition from other Southern California amusement parks, and because the facility didn't blend in with the increasingly urban character of Thousand Oaks. The company which owned the facilities declared bankruptcy and sold all the movable property at auction: animals, buildings, trucks, furniture and supplies. Goebel retained ownership of the land, which was eventually sold to the city to create the Civic Arts Plaza and other developments.

My life in North Korea vs South Korea

One year ago I went on a strictly guided 7 day-tour in North Korea where they took away my passport and did not allow me to explore anything on my own. North Korea was definitely the weirdest country I had ever visited and throughout that trip I kept wondering what life was like in the neighboring South Korea, because it used to be the same country just over 60 years ago.

To answer my questions, this year I traveled to South Korea and made this video, where I compare my time in the North and my time in the South. I still have a lot of questions about the whole situation, but one thing was clear - the daily lives of the Korean people couldn't be any more different than they are right now.

My favorite books about North Korea:

Dear Leader by Jang Jin Sung -
Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden -
Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick -
1984 by George Orwell (I couldn't believe how similar some things in North Korea felt to the ones in the book) -

ABANDONED GHOST TOWN In PERFECT CONDITION Clock Was STILL TICKING

Finding a ghost town in perfect condition is rare even in Nevada. The real kicker was the clock that was still ticking away, although off by a few hours, it was an interseting thing to see.

I discovered this strange place after searching public land maps. I spend a lot of time scouring public land maps to find the best hidden locations rarely visited. When I spotted this place, I knew I had to check it out.

I visited this location twice. When I arrived the first time, I was certain something was wrong. There was no way this was abandoned on public land, so I left. I figured it was Private Property, and we try to never enter private property.

I went home and cross referenced the Public Land Maps with MyLandMatters.org and County records, and sure enough, this was public BLM land. It was apparent that only 3 or 4 people know this place exists, and they seem to keep the place a secret. I can't say I blame them, and I will not share this location with anyone.

Inside the building there is a log book of those who have visited this cabin, and the interesting thing is, there are only 4 entries dating back to the 1970's, and three of those entries were by the same person. This suggests only a very select few know this place exists.

2018 Lone Star Land Steward: Spicewood Ranch - Texas Parks and Wildlife [Official]

The primary goal of Christopher and William Harte for this impressive ranch has been restoration of the degraded habitats on the property. The ranch is situated in a high development area near Austin and, despite land development and fragmentation in the vicinity, has evolved after decades as a traditional cattle operation into a showcase for research and management of native plant species and their habitats. The Harte family shares management techniques and strategies with others through guided plant tours, prescribed burn demonstrations, and other best practices.
