Western Sierra Camping and Off-Roading Trip
Pictures and video from an August 2020 trip to the southern end of the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Starting from Bakersfield, we headed up Rancheria Road and then headed north along various backcountry roads in the vicinity of Greenhorn Mountain, emerging in the hamlet of Johnsondale. From there, we made our way down to the Kern River, back up to Sherman Pass, visited the Bald Mountain fire lookout, camped nearby, and then headed home via Kennedy Meadows. A very enjoyable trip in spite of the smoke from nearby wildfires.

Bakersfield, CA to Lake Isabella, CA - High Speed Driving Video
This was a nice drive from Bakersfield to Lake Isabella on a fully sunny day. We start on Rosedale Highway and Allen Road, take the Westside Parkway (CA SR 58) to Mohawk, go north to Rosedale Highway, and then take it east as it meanders through 24th and 23rd Streets to finally become CA 178 Eastbound. The canyon climb is fun and curvy, though I usually tend to go through Caliente. But on this day, we make it all the way through the canyon and up into the neighborhoods just southeast of the dam. It's a fun, lighthearted drive.

Located in the Cleveland National Forest in Mount Laguna, California, from San Diego, you take the freeway I-8 East to the Sunrise Highway exit. Climbing up on Sunrise Highway, after 11 miles at 6,000 ft elevation, you'll arrive at Burnt Rancheria Campground.

This is BRECKENRIDGE ROAD
From Mohave to Tehachapi through the Windmills, then Breckenridge Road, from west to east, almost all the way through.
Kern River Canyon to Kernville.
A road trip from Bakersfield to Kernville through the Kern River canyon ending at Central Park. The canyon road (Hwy 178) is very crooked and is subject to frequent delays and closures due to rock slides and car accidents. The road follows the river with lots of pullouts making it easy to stop and wet your feet in the water on a hot day. Be very careful if you plan to play in the water. Several people drown in the river every year. The current is much swifter than it appears. If you decide to get in the water please put on a life vest. The water above the lake in much safer and has several rafting companies that provide safe ways to enjoy the river. Stay safe and have fun.

Sequoia Overland #2: Piute Peak to Tobias Peak
2nd day of our trip we travel from Piute Mountain down to Lake Isabella and then back up into the Sequoia National Forest. We setup camp for a couple days to enjoy exploration. The best part was making it to Tobias peak an the old fire tower. Views of 360 degrees and some amazing photo opps were had. Afterwards we head down to Bakersfield via the Rancheria Road. Great trails and better times!

OFF ROAD TO OAK FLAT LOOK OUT TOWER
Nice day out on the trails. Did a trip up to Oak Flat Look out Tower. This is an old fire ???? lookout. Then dropped down to the river for quick snack and relaxing cold river water.
