North Korea Military Parade 2018

North Korean military parades are one of the most sought after tourist “attractions” in the DPRK. When a North Korean military parade takes place in Pyongyang, without a doubt the event will be in every international newspaper and TV report around the world. Kim Jong Un comes out to greet the city and gives a political update, and the Korean People’s Army proceed to show off their military hardware with a unique retro-Soviet sort of fashion that very few countries these days still do.

With no foreign media invited to attend, rare footage of a military parade in Pyongyang, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Korean People's Army in the DPRK on February 8th, 2018.

NORTH KOREA military parade│ Vlog (2017)

I spent 3 days in North Korea during the celebrations of Kim Il Sung's 105th Anniversary: the Day of the Sun. This is what I saw.

(Below information was added in late 2021)

That year was particularly special because of the 105th Anniversary. Digital devices were strictly prohibited for the two most startling things I saw (and there are no pictures at all on the internet):
- unexpectedly, we've got invited to watch a very carefully arranged military parade
- the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun (Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il Mausoleum): with airport-like security. Strict rules apply, like bowing at each side of the embalmed body. The most well-groomed building I've been to and polished floor I've seen.

I took a 5-day tour from Beijing. It was actually 3 full days in North Korea since the first and last days are for arriving and leaving the country. Whether by train - the cheaper option and the one I chose or taking a flight from Beijing to Pyongyang with Air Koryo, a North Korean airline.

It is mandatory to go with an agency (there's no way of going solo). In my case, I went with Young Pioneer Tours. It looked easy-going and the most affordable option (at least at the moment, I don't know now). Trips to the DPRK are quite expensive (it is/was a good source of income for the country). The whole process was very smooth.

At the initial meeting in Beijing, there is an overview of the rules that we have to comply with. Remember, you are in a completely different country, with its own rules and law. For your own good, it is better to follow them and go unnoticed.

NorthKorea: Nostalgic scenery-Pyongyang

A view of North Korea at the end of the 20th century. People in the West may think that time has stopped and nothing has changed in North Korea. However, even North Korea, especially Pyongyang, has evolved somewhat, and the last century of the 1990s is now a long time ago, a nostalgic world even for them. Perhaps.

North Korean Goose Steps (DPRK)

Don´t know if these girls are military or just school girls. We were filming and taking pictures openly, and no one dissaproved or stopped us. We were told that this was probably arranged for us, and that they allways showed up when tourists arrived.

55th anniversary of North Korea - Military parade

Not the easiest thing to find on the internet. Its a shame the TV broadcast commentary interrupts half way through.

North Korea Military Parade July 2013 Pyongyang 평양

The participants of the Military Review (for Victory Day) of July 27, 2013, leave Kim Il Sung Square in the center of Pyongyang. This was the 60th anniversary of the 1953 Armistice.

Note: This was shot with a GH3, which was new to me, as was Final Cut Pro. Most of the processing was done in iMovie. Some of the problems included the unexpected poor quality of the stills - all I can think of is that they may have been shot in video mode although I thought I was using A mode. The video clips have color balance problems (my fault) which could not be completely fixed (Lightroom and FCP), leaving much footage somewhat washed-out. The vehicles passed much too quickly but after converting the relevant clips to slow motion the results were jerky and not pleasing. So, I left them at the speed as shot. I created this quick effort on a four year-old iMac which is not up to this kind of work. Of course, I have the original files so this will be reprocessed when I upgrade my hardware (awaiting next generation), using FCP.

Any advice on how to improve this kind of shooting and processing would be appreciated.

70th anniversary of the North Korean army - Military Parade

North Korean military band performing at the 90th birthday of late Kim Il-sung and the 70th anniversary of the founding of Korean People's Army North Korean Military Parade Pyongyang, April 25, 2002

Well, more militia then regular army parade. Since it was a TV broadcast, commentary overlaps the footage partially.

P.S - Just to clear things up about the Korean Peoples Army being 70 years old (at the time of this parade) despite the fact the DPRK came into existence after World War II.

A propaganda quote on the 25/4/2002 from the Korean Central News Agency of the DPRK's English website:

KPA, revolutionary armed forces
Pyongyang, April 25 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean People's Army. On the occasion all the officers and men of the people's army and people look back with deep emotion upon the proud course of the revolutionary armed forces replete with victory and glory.
Seven decades ago President Kim Il Sung founded the Korean People's Revolutionary Army, the first genuine army of the people in the history of Korea, to wage a protracted and hard-fought struggle against the Japanese imperialists and accomplish the historic cause of the country's liberation.
After the liberation of Korea in August 1945 the KPRA grew to be the KPA, the regular armed forces. The servicemen displayed matchless self-sacrificing spirit and mass heroism in the three-year-long Fatherland Liberation War (June 1950-July 1953) to defeat the U.S. imperialist aggressors who had boasted of being the strongest in the world and creditably safeguarded the sovereignty of the country and the nation and their dignity.
The KPA that won the wars against the two formidable imperialist enemies has grown to be an invincible army under the guidance of supreme commander Kim Jong Il.
He has pursued the army-based policy to train the KPA as the main force of the revolution, lead the struggle to defend socialism to victory and remarkably increase the nation's military potential.
In the 1990s when the imperialist campaign to isolate and stifle the DPRK was at its height and a dangerous situation was prevailing in the country the KPA gave full play to the revolutionary spirit of soldiers to perform shining feats in the defence of the country and socialist construction.
The rare wisdom, outstanding politico-military ability and matchless grit of the supreme commander are the source of the tremendous combat power of the KPA.
