Our visit Nikko travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting mountains, waterfalls, temples, shrines and lakes. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Nikko tourism brochure, Nikko itinerary or Nikko, Japan tour.

10 Things to do in Nikko Tour | Japan Travel Guide Video Transcript:

After a month in Tokyo, Nikko was everything we were hoping for! We knew we were in for a treat on the train ride over once we started seeing forests and mountains all around us and the town did not disappoint.

Nikko was the breath of fresh air we were looking for; during our visit we hiked through shrines and temples, cruised a beautiful lake at the base of a volcano, sampled some local dishes featuring tofu skin, and basically had the perfect city break.

So in this travel guide, we are going sharing some of our favourite things to do in Nikko, so you too can plan your weekend escape!

The Shinkyo Bridge you see today was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some form has stood on this very same spot for much longer...even if its origins are a bit unclear.

Nikko is home to numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. We focused our visit on the Toshogu Shrine.

Now for a quick history lesson; the Toshogu shrine is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was Japan’s last feudal military government, with the shogun as its leader.

Kegon is Nikko’s most famous waterfall. It stands almost 100 meters tall and the waters that feed it comes directly from Lake Chuzenji.

We were feeling pretty hungry after all that sightseeing, so we decided to find a restaurant serving up the local specialty: yuba! Or tofu skin.

I ordered the ramen with yuba and Sam got the udon with yuba. The tofu skin was fluffy and absorbed all the flavours of the miso.

Lake Chuzenji is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. We cruised around the lake for a bit, but then got off at one of the early stops to continue onwards to Yumoto Onsen.

Yumoto is a small hot springs town that is located in part of Nikko National Park. We then enjoyed a little walk along Lake Yunoko, before hopping back on a bus to Senjougahara Moor.

The Senjogahara Marshland covers the area between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It offers some great hiking opportunities within Nikko National Park.

And that’s a wrap for our Nikko travel guide! This proved to be the perfect weekend escape from Tokyo. We visited everything you see here over the course of 2 days, but this place is even better if you can come for 3 or 4 nights. Nature abounds, there are countless shrines and temples to visit, plus the local cuisine was exquisite! Now you have a few ideas of things to do around Nikko when you visit. Wishing you happy travels and see you next time!

This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

Japan (part 1) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Japan, Land Of The Rising Sun, a fascinating country with a colourful culture and history.

Tokyo is the gigantic metropolis of an exotic world with its Imperial Palace which is protected by mighty walls and wide moats, vivid proof of the former supreme power of the former Tokugawa Shoguns.

Close by, in Shiba Park, are the Zojo Ji Family Temple and the remains of the Tokugawa Clan’s cemetery. To this day, the temple has remained a place of meditation and Buddhist faith. Adjacent is Tokyo Tower that is situated on the edge of the Roppongi district and is a replica of Paris’ Eiffel Tower.

Kyoto is considered to be the cradle of Japanese culture an ancient Imperial city with twelve hundred years of history. Emperor Saga honoured the monk, Kukai, by giving him the eastern Toji Temple as the centre of Shingon Buddhism.

Nara is the birthplace of Japanese art and literature. Newly-imported Buddhism was sponsored by those who ruled and extended throughout Japan. Thus, the original religion of ancient Japan, Shinto, was confined to local sanctuaries such as at the Himuro Shrine which conserves this ancient national, cultural belief.

The National Museum exhibits important works of art from the Nara period, an exceptional collection of early Buddhist art. Centuries of almost complete isolation have formed a fascinating culture in Japan that is harmonious but at the same time rich in contrast as nowhere else.

Osaka is the second largest city and economic and administrative centre of West Japan. An old trading city with a huge castle. There’s far more, too. Japan is full of both modern and ancient surprises!

Trip from Tokyo to NIKKO, JAPAN | Places to Visit, What to Eat & Ryokan Stay ????????????

Taking you with me on a 2-day healing trip to Nikko, Japan, a small city in the mountains located 144 kilometres up north of Tokyo, and is home to some of Japan’s most enchanting nature trails, waterfalls, hot springs, zen gardens and shrines.

The fact that Nikko is located further up north means that Autumn begins earlier here. We'll start to see Autumn foliage since mid-October, making Nikko a scenic place to visit during this time. One of the biggest highlights of this town are The Shrines and Temples of Nikkō, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it comprises of 103 buildings or structures and the natural scenery that is around it. Toshogu Shrine was undeniably one of the most lavishly decorated shrines I have ever come across in Japan, from its wooden carvings, vibrant colours and hints of gold.

Although what I've filmed would not be able to capture the true beauty of this town fully, in this vlog, I hope to show you some things to do/places to visit/eat in Nikko (not only in Autumn, but throughout the whole year), as well as places to view the beautiful Autumn Foliage. I hope you enjoy this vlog as much as I enjoyed editing it! ???? Hope this will be able to act as a travel guide for you if you are deciding on going on a weekend trip or day trip near from Tokyo :)

A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.

Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD

Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals

Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

Q: Where did you stay overnight?
A: You can find links to the different accommodations above + alternatives.

Nikko (Japan) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Nikko in Japan.
North of Tokyo, and surrounded by extensive woodland, is the shrine complex of Nikko. The elegant Taiyuin-Byo Shrine uniquely combines the shrine and temple architecture of the Momayama Era. The Futarasan Shrine lies opposite, almost hidden within the hills and forests which, particularly in autumn, enchant with a blaze of vivid colour. The first Tokugawa-Shogun, Ieyasu, left precise regulations for his burial. As both an incarnation of a Buddhist and Shinto deity, the powerful ruler wanted to protect his empire even in death. Twenty years after Ieyasu‘s demise, his grandson Iemitsu assembled up to fifteen thousand craftsmen and over a hundred of the most important artists of the time. Influenced by the Chinese Kano School, and in only two years of construction, they created massive monuments on the edge of the Nikko Mountains, the complex of which comprises both a Buddhist and Shinto area. Past a five-storey pagoda and stone and bronze lanterns, the route leads to the Holy Stable. Three Wise Monkeys decorate the building which see, hear and speak no evil. For two years, craftsmen were constantly busy with construction work, design, gilding, painting and varnishing. Thus, without doubt, came into being the most powerful and magnificent temple complex in Japan. Nikko encapsulates history, highly-revered burial ground and a refuge of faith.
