LIVING OFF THE LAND: TARO FARMING ON THE STUNNING NIUE ISLAND!

Taro farming life on a very hot day and also dealing with wasps on our beloved Niue Island!
Today was a perfect example of not working smart at all. It was too hot when we went tending to our bush taro garden. It is the hot season of the year also. We were there from about 2pm to just after 5pm.
I really felt hammered by the sun today. Too hot! Nearly collapsed from heat exhaustion.
Now a reminder to self to work smart and avoid doing that again. The kids on this day fared way better than I.

Niue - The Rock of Polynesia (Part One)

Niue - the most incredible place many have never heard of. This tiny island nation is situated in the Pacific Ocean a three and a half hour flight from Auckland, New Zealand. It is one of the world's largest coral islands with a population of around 1600 people living in 14 villages. Niue boasts some of the world's clearest water and a rugged coastline with chasms, caves and coral reefs.
In September 2023 a group of fifteen fun-loving folk (14 Aussies, 1 Kiwi) visited Niue for a week. This is the first part of an amazing adventure.

Niue Island Tourism Promotional

We visited this remote island in the South Pacific in 2012 on the (then) once weekly fligth from Auckland. Niue is not your typical South Pacific Island with snowy white sand and swaying palm trees! But what they lack in terms of beaches the reason why you should come here, is the people of the island! Incredible hospitable and we felt that the entire island met us at the airport on arrival. Immediately invited to chair in local traditions (as the weekly sundowner on the beach bar) to local festivities. And on top of the people iot is the incredible diving that are offered on Niue. This is a very special place in the South Pacific scheme of things! The video was given to us by the Niue Tourism Office.

SUNDAY LUNCH PREP, COOK, AND EAT | EATING FISH BAKED THE NIUE ISLAND WAY!

Yummy fish for our Sunday Lunch this day.
This is a bottom fish with nice white and very soft meat. Pair it up with kaluku leaves or birds nest fern tips, fresh coconut cream and wrapped up in a banana leaf, is a recipe for a very satisfying meal!
Blessed because this is one of the many fish that was gifted to us by my niece Brittany Tagelagi and her partner Daryn Magatogia.
Very very grateful and blessed indeed!

We had shared lunch with Phillip Skeen who is here on his regular visits for our church seminary program and also the Stradlings from Arizona, USA.

Brother Stradling served his 2 year mission here on Niue from 1975- 1977, and this is the first time he has returned after all this time.
We will put up another video soon of a little interview Heimana did with him about how it was was for him here on Niue and what the Island was like from his perspective almost 50 years ago.

Stay tuned!

FAMILY DOWNTIME OUTDOORS ON A TROPICAL ISLAND - NIUE ISLAND!

Family time outdoors is what we love doing and we have been doing this ever since the kids were small.
We try to make the most of it when we are all still together because one day, they will be all grown up with their own lives, responsibilities, families and whatever else life brings.
It is always a great time to wind down after daily chores or just to cool down from the heat of the day.
