Montserrat, Barcelona in 4K

I'm so happy I made the decision to visit Montserrat while I was staying in Barcelona. It will take your breath away, and I mean literally. First taking the funicular up the mountain is really amazing (and a bit scary). Then walking on the small city that sits on a rock is somewhat hard to believe. The cheery on top of my day trip was flying my drone. I'm so glad I was able to capture a perspective that would be impossible from the ground. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Montserrat, Barcelona - Catalonia's legendary monastery in a magnificent mountain landscape

Today we visit the famous Montserrat Monastery. The Benedictine monastery is the Catalan national shrine and lies in a wild and majestic mountain landscape. It is one of the most visited destinations in the hinterland of Barcelona.

To travel from Barcelona to Montserrat we take the train. From Plaça d'Espanya train station, the R5 train leaves every 20 to 40 minutes. At the “Monistrol de Montserrat” station we change to the “Cremallera de Montserrat” rack railway, which takes us directly up to the monastery. Even this 15-minute ride is a first highlight with great views of the rugged sandstone mountains. The entire journey from Barcelona to Montserrat takes approximately 1.5 hours.

The rack railway ends directly at the Montserrat Monastery at an altitude of 725 meters. The massive monastery nestles directly against the rock walls like an eagle's nest, while the bizarre rock needles rise into the sky above, a fantastic view. From here you have an breathtaking view of the Catalan hinterland and as far as Barcelona, where you can clearly see Tibidabo, Barcelona's local mountain. The monastery of Montserrat itself is architecturally nothing special; the unique panoramic location and the wonderful rocky backdrop into which the walls were built are impressive.

The monastery was built between 1025 and 1035. The main features of today's monastery complex date from the 15th century. In 1811 the monastery was largely destroyed by Napoleonic troops and then rebuilt in a more functional style. At the time of the Franco dictatorship, the monastery resisted. Despite the ban, Catalan continued to be spoken there and masses were held in Catalan. Many of those persecuted by the Franco regime were hidden here. More than 20 monks were executed because of this. This resistance makes the monastery today an important symbol of Catalan independence and the fight against oppression. There is also a museum with works by well-known artists such as Monet, El Greco and Dali as well as archaeological and liturgical exhibits.

The main religious attraction is the black madonna, which was found in the 12th century and is said to have performed miracles and is now the patron saint of Catalonia. The madonna is still the destination of pilgrimages today. It towers over the high altar in the monastery's basilica. In her honor, around 50 choir boys from the monastery's boarding school sing church songs every day. We stand in line for the visit to the Black Madonna. This winds its way very slowly through the side rooms of the basilica and we need a lot of patience until we finally stand in front of the legendary figure.

But actually from our point of view not the monastery is the highlight, but the landscape that surrounds it! As if out of nowhere, the mighty mountain range of Montserrat rises from the plain and reaches a height of 1236 meters at the summit of Sant Jeroni. The rugged mountain landscape with rugged peaks and bizarre rock formations exudes a fascination that is difficult to resist. We take the “Funicular de Sant Joan” cable car up to the mountain station at an altitude of 970 meters. From here you can hike up to the highest peak, Sant Jeroni, in about an hour. Unfortunately we only make it to the hermitage of Sant Joan because the visit to the black madonna took us more time than expected. But this short hike also offers great views and exciting paths between rock faces and abysses. This mountain landscape is a hiking paradise. The further you go, the quieter it becomes. A stark contrast to the lively city of Barcelona and also the heavily visited monastery!

Montserrat is one hour from Barcelona but bit of a hidden gem. Although plenty of tourists visit the monastery, the walking routes are very quiet. This place has a fascinating history with Napoleon and Himmler paying it a visit. Himmler specifically came looking for the holy grail which he believed would give him supernatural powers. It is easy to get here from Barcelona and a perfect day trip. We sleep in our car again and find out that many truck stops have showers to use for a small fee, a great budget travel hack.

Tiny Tour | Montserrat Spain | A 1000 year old Monastery in the mountains 2020

Hi guys, today we visited the monastery of Santa María de Montserrat (in Catalan , Monestir de Santa Maria de Montserrat ). it is a Benedictine abbey located in the mountain of Montserrat , belongs to the region of Bages, in the province of Barcelona, at a height of 720 meters above the level of the sea. It is a symbol for Catalonia and has become a pilgrimage point for believers and a must for tourists.
In 1025, Oliba, Abbot of Ripoll and Bishop of Vic, together founded a new monastery at the hermitage of Santa Maria de Montserrat. The little monastery soon began to receive pilgrims and visitors who contributed to the spread of stories of miracles and wonders performed by the Virgin.
In 1409 the monastery of Montserrat became an independent abbey. From 1493 to 1835, a period in which the monastery underwent great reforms, growing and increasing in splendour, Montserrat was part of the Valladolid Congregation.

Tour Montserrat With Us | Tiny Volcanic Island | Giant In Music History

In this vlog, learn more about Montserrat with us, as we tour this beautiful island.

Some Facts About Montserrat:

1. Montserrat is a volcanic island in the South-Eastern Caribbean.
2. Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano, which had been dormant for centuries, became active in July 1995, erupted, and buried the capital city of Plymouth, which is considered a modern-day Pompeii. The most recent eruption of Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano was on June 25, 1997.
3. After the eruptions, the majority of the island’s population fled the island, mostly for the United Kingdom.
4. The population in Montserrat, at present, is approximately 5000 people.
5. Being a volcanic island, most of Montserrat’s beaches are black sand beaches.
6. Montserrat can be visited by small aircrafts, ferries, and other boats of similar size. The most straightforward way to Visit Montserrat is by flying from Antigua.
7. Montserrat is called the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean due to its Irish heritage and also its lush green land.
8. Montserrat is the only country outside of Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a national holiday. The St. Patrick’s Day celebration is the biggest celebration of the year on the island.
9. Montserrat is especially well-known in the music industry thanks, in part, to AIR Studios Montserrat, a state-of-the-art recording studio built by Sir George Martin, world-renowned producer of the Beatles. This is where Stevie Wonder recorded “Ebony and Ivory” with Paul McCartney. Many other artists, including Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Duran Duran, and Eric Clapton recorded at AIR Studios Montserrat.
10. Arrow, also known as the Might Arrow, the original artist who created the soca hit “Hot Hot Hot” is Montserratian. He recorded “Hot Hot Hot” at AIR Studios Montserrat.

The mystery of the Guirun burial site in Oaxaca by Montserrat Franco

✨ The Guirun Burial site (Tumba Cruciforme de Guirun)
✨ Is an archeological site that dates from the 700 AD, located in Xaaga, San Lorenzo Albarradas, Oaxaca.
✨ For the Zapotec, the cross had an intrinsec significance prior to Evangelisation; it was referred to the four cardinal points. In addition, these burial sites were designated specifically for the high priests and nobility and for their passage to the alter life.
✨ The cross-shaped burial site has specific fretwork similar to those found in Mitla; the ascendent and descendent of the water and the universe in the center.
✨ This particular site is not open to the public. We appreciate the help of our friend cultural promoter and activist Fabian Rojas who helped us connecting with the village’s guides.
We have asked permission to the land and embarked in a about an hour hiking across the mountain to arrive at 2,040 m above sea level.
