Market Square Helsinki Finland???????? Walking Tour

Located at the South Harbour at one end of the Esplanade Park, the Market Square is Helsinki's most international and famous market. The booths here sell traditional market foods and treats, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs. There are also heated café tents where you can comfortably have a steaming hot coffee even on the coldest days in winter. The Helsinki Baltic Herring Market, one of the oldest ongoing event traditions in Finland, is arranged here every October. It has been held since 1743.

There's a ferry connection to Suomenlinna Fortress island from the Market Square year round, and in summer it is possible to catch eg. a ferry to Korkeasaari Zoo, hop on one of the archipelago sightseeing cruises or take a boat trip to Porvoo.

HELSINKI'S TRADITIONAL CENTRAL MARKET - A FOODIE'S DREAM - FINLAND 4K 2023

Harborside market open year-round with food stalls, handicrafts & a heated café tent in winter.

This is an open bazaar where you can find a variety of food and souvenirs. It's a typical place to enjoy seafood and fast food options. Although I didn't try the food myself, it seems like a nice place to spend time and enjoy the fresh air.

One of the places that you need to visit when you are in Helsinki. There are many food stalls and souvenirs. I tried one of the stalls named Sun Market Finland, and ordered their Salmon Soup. The soup tastes good, the taste of the salmon is strong and the rye bread is a good compliment for this dish.

Visit Helsinki #1 Kauppatori Market Square & Old Market Hall

The Market Square (Kauppatori in Finnish, Salutorget in Swedish) is a central square in Helsinki, Finland, and one of the most famous market places and tourist attractions in the city.

Located in the South Harbour at the very beginning of the Esplanade Park, the Market Square is Helsinki's most international and famous market. The booths here sell traditional market foods and treats, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs. There is also a heated café tent where you can comfortably sip steaming hot coffee even on the coldest days in winter.

The Market Square is located near the centre of Helsinki, at the eastern end of Esplanadi and bordering the Baltic Sea to the south and Katajanokka to the east. The Helsinki City Transport maintains an all-year-round ferry link from the Market Square to Suomenlinna, and in the summer there are also private companies providing ferry cruises, both to Suomenlinna and other nearby islands.

From spring to autumn, the Market Square is bustling with activity with vendors selling fresh Finnish food and souvenirs. There are also many outdoor cafés at the square. Some cafés also provide meat pastries (lihapiirakka in Finnish), and one advertises their pastries as being the best in the Market Square… in Helsinki… in Finland!

The height of the square's popularity is in early October when the annual Helsinki herring market (silakkamarkkinat in Finnish) begins.

A long tradition at the Market Square is a display of old American cars on the first Friday of every month. Any motorist with an interest in old American cars can take part in this display. How the tradition originally started is unclear.

Helsinki (/ˈhɛlsɪŋki/ HEL-sink-ee or /hɛlˈsɪŋki/ (About this soundlisten) hel-SINK-ee, Finnish: [ˈhelsiŋki] (About this soundlisten); Swedish: Helsingfors [helsiŋˈforsː] (About this soundlisten)) is the capital and most populous city of Finland. Located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, it is the seat of the region of Uusimaa in southern Finland, and has a population of 650,058. The city's urban area has a population of 1,268,296, making it by far the most populous urban area in Finland as well as the country's most important center for politics, education, finance, culture, and research. Helsinki is located 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Tallinn, Estonia, 400 km (250 mi) east of Stockholm, Sweden, and 300 km (190 mi) west of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It has close historical ties with these three cities.

Together with the cities of Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen, and surrounding commuter towns, Helsinki forms the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which has a population of nearly 1.5 million. Often considered to be Finland's only metropolis, it is the world's northernmost metro area with over one million people as well as the northernmost capital of an EU member state. After Stockholm and Oslo, Helsinki is the third largest municipality in the Nordic countries. The city is served by the international Helsinki Airport, located in the neighboring city of Vantaa, with frequent service to many destinations in Europe and Asia.

Helsinki was the World Design Capital for 2012, the venue for the 1952 Summer Olympics, and the host of the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest in 2007.

Helsinki has one of the highest urban standards of living in the world. In 2011, the British magazine Monocle ranked Helsinki the world's most liveable city in its liveable cities index. In the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2016 liveability survey, Helsinki was ranked ninth among 140 cities.

00:00 Vanha Kauppahalli (Helsinki Old Market)
07:28 Kauppatori (Helsinki Market Square)
19:19 ???? CINEMATIC ending

Hello, it's good to see you again.
Today we are welcomed in the Old Market Hall, located next to the Market Square of Helsinki, Finland.
Where merchants sell all kinds of cheese, fish, shellfish, vegetables, fruit and cakes to spices, coffee and tea.
There are a total of about 25 merchants and cafes.
Here you will also find the smallest Alko shop for wines and beverages, as well as cafes and restaurants.

To learn about its rich history, we need to travel back to 19th-century Helsinki, which was then the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland.
Before the Old Market Hall was established, groceries were mainly sold at open-air markets.
The idea that trade could take place in covered halls only came to light in the last decades of the century.
A new awareness about food hygiene was the main reason for this.
In 1888, construction began on the first indoor hall in Helsinki, the Old Market Hall.
The hall was not opened to the public until 1889.
Designed by the Finnish architect Gustaf Nyström (1856 - 1917).
The design is heavily influenced by market halls in other major European cities.
At the time of opening, the hall had 120 stalls and 6 shops.
Between 1899 - 1905 Finland went through the first period of oppression, with increasing campaigns for the Russification of Finland.

2 more market halls were built in Helsinki, Hietalahti Market (1903) and Hakaniemi Market (1914).
The period during the First World War, the Finnish Civil war and Finland's independence (1914 - 1918) saw extreme scarcity.
In the early 1920s, trade started to flourish again.
Market halls in other towns in Finland were built rapidly.
However, 2 upcoming major events would jeopardize the survival of the market halls.
With the worldwide recession in the 1930s that hit the trade at the Old Market Hall.
Immediately followed by the Finnish Winter War (1939 - 1945).
Resulting in 6 harsh years, due to general scarcity, access to raw materials was strictly rationed, while the black market trade posed a further threat to the merchants.
In post-war Finland rationing came to an end in 1954, and in the decades that followed, trade recovered and grew year after year.

Finland joined the EU in 1995, which meant significant changes for merchants selling foreign delicacies.
With product imports from countries such as France, Italy, Spain and other Central European nations.

Thanks for walking with me, ???? ???????????????????? ???? ???????????????????????????????????? ???????????? ???????????????????? ???????????????????????? ???????????????? ????????:???????? ????

Take care and have a nice week. ????

Helsinki Finland (The Senate Square)

Exploring The Senate Square in Helsinki

We went to explore The Senate Square in Helsinki. We took the tram there in the evening. It was a cold night and we took some cool footage with our drone. We also walked through the long tunnel to the metro station, Helsinki University. We really like exploring the beautiful city of Helsinki. The Senate Square in Helsinki is mostly famous for the huge cathedral.

Helsinki Market Square (HD)

The Helsinki Market Square was one of the highlights of our visit of the Finland capitol city. There were lots of merchants selling warm clothing, souvenir goods, produce such as berries, and plenty of street food such as salmon soup, sausages, grilled fish- see this video for a close up:

Sightseeing Walk through Helsinki, Finland - Kauppatori Markets, Uspenski Cathedral, & Senate Square

Now arriving in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. This lively port city is a buzz bright and early, which is understandable when it's been voted one of the most livable cities. The most populated of Finland's cities, it attracts the country's most foreign tourism, and is chock full of food, shops, and historical sites.

We visited Helsinki as our final port (not counting departure) during a Scandinavian cruise for Royal Caribbean; specifically the Voyager of the Seas (which we'll have a tour for in due course). That said, if you find yourself coming to Helsinki by ship, know that it's not really necessary to book any shore excursions if you're wanting to save money. The vast majority of sites you will visit on any highlights tour are within walking distance of each other, and even if you don't have GPS access, they're pretty easy to spot along the skyline.

Everything more or less encircles a harbor used for smaller ships and ferries, with Senate Square, the Presidential Palace, and Helsinki Cathedral about 1- to 2-blocks north of it. Helsinki Cathedral, Uspenski Cathedral, and Senate Square are free, though tourists are only allowed in a small thoroughfare at Uspenski (not the main building). All that said, you will likely want to take a shuttle to the general area these sites are located at. The bigger cruise ships dock too far away to realistically walk. Said shuttle costs about 20 Euro for two people, round trip. For our walking tour, we'll do a loop from the shuttle drop-off to each of the aforementioned sites, as well as hit up a few markets and parks along the way.
