LUXEMBOURG TRAVEL | Highlights of Luxembourg Country + Travel Itinerary

The country of Luxembourg is situated in western Europe and borders Belgium, France, and Germany. With an area of 2,586 square kilometers (998 sq mi), Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in all of Europe. But in spite of its size, this country has deep historical roots and offers a lot of diversity. From the rocky gorges in the east to the river valleys in the north and medieval towns with castles perched in between. We’ll now dive into our top 7 interesting places to visit and things to do in the country of Luxembourg.

7. Echternach
Echternach is located in the east of Luxembourg, right next to the German border. It is known as the oldest town in the country, dating back to the end of the 7th century when the Abbey of Echternach was established. Today, you can find a lovely open square, beautiful historical buildings (including the Abbey of Echternach, the adjoined Basilica of Saint Willibrord, the Roman Villa and the Orangery), and cute restaurants. This town makes for a great stop while exploring the countryside, or as a base to explore the unspoilt Mullerthal Region.

6. Mullerthal
The Mullerthal Region itself is probably the most unique area in all of Luxembourg. With an abundance of mysterious caves, small waterfalls, dense forests, and sandstone rock formations, this region is best explored on foot. Experienced hikers can tackle the challenging 112 km (70mi) Mullerthal Trail. But if you just have a few hours or a day, we recommend hiking shorter trails (i.e. Schiessentümpel waterfalls, Huel Lee Cave, Kallektuffquell).

5. Esch-sur-Sûre
Situated in a river valley in north-western Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Sûre is one of the tiniest villages in the country. Here, it seems as if time has stood still. You can see the remains of an old castle on the hill, with narrow streets surrounding it.

4. Clervaux
Located in northern Luxembourg, Clervaux is another countryside town that is worth a visit. Not only is it home to the beautiful Clervaux castle, but you can also walk here in the surrounding forests and hills or explore the small town center and nearby Abbey.

3. Bourscheid
Bourscheid is a small town in north-eastern Luxembourg, known for the country’s largest and most dramatic castle. But besides that, this village is located right next to the river and surrounded by rolling, green hills. Thus, it’s a great place for camping, swimming, and hiking. The long-distance Escapardenne Lee Trail runs through this area, and offers breathtaking views of the river valley (Gringlay View Point).

2. Vianden
Vianden is our favorite town in all of Luxembourg. Located in a valley along the Our River, this village enjoys an idyllic setting. But its main attraction is undoubtedly the Vianden Castle, which has been beautifully restored since 1977 when it passed into state ownership. You can easily combine a visit to the castle with a stroll through the town or a scenic ride on the chairlift.

1. Luxembourg City
Luxembourg City is the vibrant, cultural capital city of the country with an interesting layout. The city is divided into two sections: the High City (Ville Haute), which is the medieval town center situated on a cliff face, and the Low City (Ville Basse), which is located in the ravine that runs through the city.

The ULTIMATE Travel Guide: Luxembourg

Luxembourg Travel Guide, Luxembourg Tour, Luxembourg Travel

Despite being one of the smallest countries in Europe, Luxembourg is one of the loveliest and greenest places to travel. Tourists choose Luxembourg for a trip abroad because there are plenty of things that you can do here. Luxembourg, which shares borders with Belgium, France, and Germany, has a diverse range of cultural influences, including a number of widely used languages. The amount of greenery in Luxembourg will first catch your attention. The journey through the bizarre forest of trees is an unusual landscape in a city in Europe. Instead of being overrun by a concrete jungle, the area is dominated by seas of trees.

10 Things To Do In Luxembourg City | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:

Well, welcome to Luxembourg! The only Grand Duchy in the world. Over the next few days we're going to be exploring the capital of Luxembourg City and this is going to be a little city guide to show you some of the highlights.

Located smack dab in between Germany, France, and Belgium, the little Grand Duchy of Luxembourg can be easy to miss if you're not looking carefully, however, we're of the opinion that this is a beautiful destination that you'll definitely want to make time for. From picturesque neighbourhoods with cream coloured walls, to dazzling views of blue rooftops in the Old Town below, Luxembourg City is a charming destination that you'll want to add to your European itinerary.

So this hear is the Corniche and it is a pedestrian promenade which has been called the most beautiful balcony in all of Europe because it gets some spectacular views of the old town.

So we are now entering the Bock Casemates and apparently this was the old fortification of Luxemborg and it was known as the Gibraltar of the north.

This was once one of the most envied fortresses in all of Europe.

Right now we're visiting the Three Towers which are remnants of an old fortress.

We've been walking around a neighborhood called the Grund which is directly below the city center. And it is really picturesque and without tourists.

So behind me we have Saint Michael's church which is the oldest church in Luxembourg. The first church to be built on this spot dates back to the year 987, however, the church was destroyed, rebuilt, and renovated many times over the centuries.

The Palace houses the Grand Duke's office and during the summer months.

There is no shortage of museums in Luxembourg City, so we took some time to visit the National Museum of Art and History.

We are now looking at the Passerelle which is Luxembourg's very own viaduct.

So we are now standing in William Square which is a really popular spot on Sundays and Wednesdays because local vendors setup shop and they sell all kinds of things from fresh produce, to flowers, street snacks.

So final thoughts of Luxembourg. Alright, to wrap things up here it was a really cool city. It is the type of city that you can explore in just one or two days. A weekend type of destination because a lot of the attractions are nearby one another. And we just found it a very easy city to get around in on foot.

So as a little travel tip if you're planning on being in the city for a few days we really recommend the Luxembourg Card. This is what we used while we were here and it is really good for public transportation across the city. Across the country actually and you also get access to seventy different galleries, museums, historic attractions and it is not that expensive. I mean it depends on whether you get a family or an individual card but we really recommend it because we made a lot of use of it.

Our visit to Luxembourg City was short and sweet, but we hope this video gave you a little taste of what it's like. Now it's your turn: have you ever been to Luxembourg? If so, feel free to share some of your tips in the comments below.

This is part of our Travel in Luxembourg series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Luxembourg culture, Luxembourg foods & Luxembourg cuisine.

LUXEMBOURG - Travel Guide | Around The World

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg, French:Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, German: Großherzogtum Luxemburg), is a landlocked country in the Benelux bordered by Belgium, France and Germany which lies at the crossroads of Germanic and Latin cultures. It is the only Grand Duchy in the world and is the second-smallest of the European Union member states.

With a successful steel, finance and high technology industry, a strategic location at the heart of Western Europe, more natural beauty than you might expect given its size, and as one of the three richest countries in the world, Luxembourg enjoys a very high standard of living - and has prices to match!

The city of Luxembourg proper was founded in 963, and its strategic position soon promised it a great fate. Luxembourg was at the crossroads of Western Europe and became heavily fortified, and you can still see the extensive city walls and towers which are the most distinctive aspect of the cityscape. Due to its key position, Luxembourg was raised up to a Duchy that included a much larger territory that stretched into present-day Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and France. The powerful Habsburg family kept its hands on it until late Renaissance times.

Luxembourg-Findel International Airport (IATA: LUX) is 6km outside Luxembourg-City. Easily accessible from the city centre via the cheap (€2 single or €4 for a day ticket valid on almost all buses and trains in the country

Luxembourg is a compact country and it's possible to reach almost any place in the country from the capital in under an hour. The central railway station has a handy Mobilitéit office that will help to plan your trip with bus and train.

You may not expect it from one of the smallest countries in Europe, but The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a diverse land, full of beautiful nature and gorgeous historic monuments. Its turbulent history is filled with stories of emperors and counts as well as many battles and disputes. Today, the almost fairy-tale like castles and fortresses are a faint but impressive reminder of those days, and amidst their lovely natural setting, they make some superb and picturesque sights.

Most of the country's population lives in rural areas and apart from the delightful historic City of Luxembourg, the country's capital, settlements are mostly small. That said, the capital is a place not to be missed. It has a splendid location high on a cliff, overlooking the deep and narrow valleys of both the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. Several parts of the old town are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the most interesting places include the Gothic Revival Cathedral of Notre Dame, the town fortifications and of course the Grand Ducal Palace, which is surrounded by charming cobblestoned lanes. However, there's far more to see, such as the Bock casemates, Neumünster Abbey and the Place d'Armes. There are several World War II memorial sites and a number of high-end museums, but just wandering through the old centre, taking in the beautiful views from the Chemin de la Corniche and crossing bridges to the nearest plateaus is at least as great a way to discover the city.

The lively town of Echternach is the oldest city in Luxembourg. It boasts the country's most prominent religious structure, the basilica of the Abbey of Echternach where the country's patron saint Willibrord is buried. The annual Whit Tuesday celebrations in his honour involve lots of dancers in the towns old centre and are a popular tourist attraction. The Apart from its own sights, Echternach makes a great base to explore the beautiful Müllerthal, better known as Little Switzerland. Hike or bike through its dense forests with myriad streams and even some caves.

The romantic village of Vianden with its stunning medieval Beaufort castle is a tourists' favourite, and well worth a visit even despite the crowds in summer. The beautiful location of the fortress in the Our river valley, surrounded by tight forests and a lake with swans, gives it a typical fairy-tale castle look and feel. If you're done wandering the streets and exploring the Gothic churches an fortified towers of this charming town, visit the Victor Hugo house. Afterwards, the pleasant cafés of the Grand Rue are a perfect place to kick back and enjoy.

Head to Remich to start your own trip down the Route du Vin and discover the many fine wines that are produced here, in the Moselle Valley.

The Luxembourg white wines from the Moselle valley to the east of Luxembourg include Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Rivaner and Elbling to name just a few and are good. In autumn, many villages along the Moselle river organise wine-tasting village festivals.
