Riga, Latvia - European Capital of Culture 2014

A short video shot entirely with the Canon 70D, mostly as a test, but also to show what I liked of Riga. From the Brother's cemetery, to the new National Library, and everything in between.
Riga is the European Capital of Culture 2014. For this occasion they have opened to the public the KGB building, or, as the Latvian called it, the Corner House: Highly recommended if you visit Riga. Also I'd recommend a visit to the Brother's cemetery.

Riga (Latvia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Riga in Latvia.
Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Saint Petri Church is located in the centre of the city and has a long and varied history. It features inner cross vaults modelled on those of the dome of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck’s cathedral, plus a circular arch and sturdy, red brick walls. It is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the development of the city. Mentzendorff House was a manorial property which German merchants had built at the end of the seventeenth century. Carefully renovated, its original splendour has been fully restored. The middle class buildings of Elisabeth and Albert Street indicate the prosperity of its past occupants. Like almost nowhere else, art nouveau has been preserved incredibly well with lavish embellishments and numerous motifs. Marien Cathedral is situated in the centre of the city and is the most important religious building in the Baltic States. Its age, dimensions and contrasting architectural styles bear witness to a long history and its famous organ, built in 1883, contains a hundred and twenty four registers and almost seven thousand wooden and metal pipes. In keeping with the age-old traditions of the Hanseatic League, the very heart of the Baltic beats within Latvia's metropolis and, with an elegant lust for life, Riga is an extraordinary treasure!

Best Of The Baltic Region - Visit Europe

The easiest and most relaxing way to discover the Baltic region of Europe is, of course, to embark on one of the many cruise ships that sail from Copenhagen to Helsinki. However, if you are a land-lover, or simply prefer to explore at your own pace, you can easily drive through some of the smallest, least-known but most beautiful countries in Europe.

Latvia Travel Video Guide

Latvia Travel Video Guide: Latvia (Latvija) is a European state which is situated on the coast of Baltic Sea. One of the three Baltic states, Latvia is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, Belarus on the south east, and the Baltic Sea on the west. The most famous travel spot is the capital Riga, a World Heritage Site. There are also many other great places to see, both urban and rural, such as Liepaja with its unique former secret military town of Karosta and a magnificent beach. Kuldiga with Europe`s widest waterfall and Cesis with its medieval castle ruins are also interesting. Tourists can also enjoy the wild beauty of Latvia's unspoilt sea coast, which is 500 km long and consists mainly of white, soft sandy beaches. Forests, which cover approximately a half of Latvia's territory, offer many nature trails and nature parks.

Latvia is a famous ancient trading point. The famous route from the Vikings to the Greeks' mentioned in ancient chronicles stretched from Scandinavia through Latvian territory along the river Daugava to the Kievan Rus and Byzantine Empire. Across the European continent, Latvia's coast was known as a place for obtaining amber. In the Middle Ages amber was more valuable than gold in many places.

Riga, Latvia a European Capital of Culture - Unravel Travel TV

The Latvian capital Riga will officially be unveiled as the 2014 European Capital of Culture on January 17 to 19, 2014. Riga is the gem of the Baltics. It is situated at the mouth of the Daugava, on the shores of the Gulf of Riga on the Baltic. Riga has an ancient history and rich cultural heritage. As Riga has always been located at a juncture of trading routes, it is a multicultural city which means there are things to see here: a weekend in Riga is a great way to gather new impressions and to relax.

Travellers can admire the diverse architecture of Riga, especially the art nouveau buildings. Riga has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the collection of art nouveau buildings that is one of the largest in the world, as well as a city in whose architecture the entire history from 1201 to the present day is reflected. It is also valued as a city with a unique collection of wooden developments in its central section.

In the course of history, Riga has traditionally served as a crossroads for trade and business between east and west. In 1282 it became a member of the Hanseatic League and remained an active member until its disintegration some 300 years later.

Riga has an active cultural life. The Dome Cathedral is renowned throughout the world for its acoustics and giant organ. It is worth attending one of the organ music concerts it offers. Various music festivals, from early music to opera to jazz and rock, take place in Riga, especially in the summer months. One can also visit a vast array of exciting museum exhibitions and contemporary art galleries in Riga. The city is distinguished by its great air, rail and road connections which render it the largest tourist centre in the country.

Trip to Riga in Latvia

Latvia officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika), is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, one of the three Baltic states. It is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, and Belarus to the southeast, as well as a maritime border to the west alongside Sweden. Latvia has 2,070,371 inhabitants and a territory of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi) The country has a temperate seasonal climate.
Latvia is a democratic parliamentary republic established in 1918. The capital city is Riga, the European Capital of Culture 2014. Latvian is the official language. Latvia is a unitary state, divided into 118 administrative divisions, of which 109 are municipalities and 9 are cities.
Latvians and Livs are the indigenous people of Latvia. Latvian is an Indo-European language; it and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages. Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. Latvia and Estonia share a long common history. As a consequence of the Soviet occupation, both countries are home to a large number of ethnic Russians (26.9% in Latvia and 25.5% in Estonia), some of whom are non-citizens. Latvia is historically predominantly Protestant Lutheran, except for the Latgale region in the southeast, which has historically been predominantly Roman Catholic.
The Republic of Latvia was founded on 18 November 1918. However, its de facto independence was interrupted at the outset of World War II. In 1940, the country was forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union, invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941, and re-occupied by the Soviets in 1944 to form the Latvian SSR for the next fifty years. The peaceful Singing Revolution, starting in 1987, called for Baltic emancipation of Soviet rule. It ended with the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia on 4 May 1990, and restoring de facto independence on 21 August 1991.
