Getting Kids to School in Mauritania

Malian Refugees in Mauritania

A welcome centre in a tent in the Great Sahara (Sahel) desert.

Some children get a T-shirt, others get new toys, it's not much but it brings a few smiles to these young Malian refugees.

This child friendly centre set up by the UN Children's Fund, UNCEF, and the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has registered over 500 children between the ages of three and six. It accommodates about fifty a day.

Twenty-six volunteers oversee the children, trying to give them some schooling.

SOUNDBITE (French) Meissa Walat Abdoulaye, Volunteer:
We only have this space. We made a program. Every day sixty children come here for some schooling.

Mbera camp came into being over six months ago. Attacks in northern Mali sent thousands across the border into Mauritania. All the children here saw their school year cut short. Their education was cut off.

This camp is in a desolate area of the Sahara desert. It takes days of driving through the desert to get food, water and supplies here.

Initially the priority for UNHCR was shelter. This new refugee woman needs a tent.

SOUNDBITE (French) Philippe Creppy, UNHCR Mauritania:
We will go see her, we will find her a tent.

Setting up medical care centre came next.

SOUNDBITE (French) Ely Taleb, Nurse:
I do consultations every day, about fifty or sixty consultations.

Then attention turned to the need for schooling.

Mohamed is ten years old. His little brother Ousmane is six. They were in third and first year until they fled with their mother.

SOUNDBITE (French) Maissa Walat Mohammed, Malian refugee:
We have to teach our children at home so that they don't lose all the school year.

Parents and camp organizers have rallied to put together to help give their children some schooling. Former teachers have taken to the classrooms again. And four schools in tents have been prepared for the upcoming school year.

At least twenty percent of the refugee children will benefit from these efforts. Meanwhile UNHCR and its partners are working to mobilize donor support so that more children can be given access to some education while they are here, living in exile.

The past few days in Antananarivo, Madagascar have been overwhelming, intense and eye-opening. And I apologize for the delays in posting these videos -- it's been nearly impossible to find decent enough wifi.

Madagascar, as a whole, is a beautiful tropical island with stunning greenery, giant baobab trees and unique wildlife (like lemurs!). It's also massive -- about twice the size of my home state of Arizona -- floating 250 miles off the southeastern part of mainland Africa.

But putting the natural beauty aside, Madagascar is one of the World's poorest countries, with the 5th lowest GDP per capita. Walking on the streets of Antananarivo, I couldn't help but observe and analyze what I was seeing --- people just barely managing to survive, working labor-intensive jobs with very little pay.

My new local friends and I took a mini road trip to some outer villages, where I learned about the daily life of people working in the markets. Here's what I discovered.

If there's any takeaway from today (and through travel in general) -- it is to appreciate the life I live. If you are reading this as well, consider yourself lucky because you have internet, which most of the people in Madagascar cannot afford.

Meeting the (Forgotten) Jews of Ethiopia

I'm back in Ethiopia for the 3rd time because it's one of my favorite countries in Africa! I am now exploring a city in the North called Gondar, and little did I know that I'd come across thousands of fellow Jews.

As you might know by now, I enjoy connecting with Jewish communities around the world, like I've done in Afghanistan, Yemen, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Philippines among many others -- but this experience has been the most eye-opening because of how alive the Jewish culture is. Some 4,000 Ethiopian Jews are here, studying torah, keeping Shabbat and learning Hebrew.

If this is not a fascinating story, then I am not sure what is! Join me as I take you inside the world of the forgotten Jewish tribe of Ethiopia.

THIS IS CRAZY!! Sorry Dutch people, you are not the tallest in the world. Not even close! You guys will not believe how tall the people are in South Sudan! Like EVERYONE on the streets of Juba (South Sudan's capital) is well over 6 feet tall, and many over 7 feet - even the females! It's one of the most unbelievable features of mankind that I've ever seen anywhere on this planet.

If you enjoyed this story, please share it with your friends! South Sudan can benefit from any positive attention as it's gone through rough times like civil war and political unrest.

Solo In Pakistan's Dodgiest Hood ????????

????????I have always wanted to travel to mysterious Kafiristan which is nestled in a couple of small valleys in the north of Pakistan. However to reach the northern mountains I would first need to pass through Balochistan, a region of the country that had been fought over for millennia but never quite conquered. In fact just the day before i arrived Iran bombed it. So let's just say, things didn't quite go as expected when I met the Pakistani military...Join me as we cruise the streets of Quetta.
