Schnorcheln in Island? Unbedingt!

Session 2 – Responsible tourism as an ally for safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)

This session will examine how through safeguarding, communities can recreate ICH
through the process of intergenerational transmission so that their practices continue
to respond to their environment and provide them with a sense of identity and
continuity. It will further look at the contribution sustainable tourism can make to
supporting the transmission of ICH to future generations, while creating products,
services and experiences for visitors.

How can tourism, culture and local community stakeholders work together to ensure
the dynamic and living nature ICH is respected and adequately interpreted? How can
we ensure that increased tourism around an element of ICH does not lead to its
decontextualisation? How can we ensure a positive role of tourism in this process?

Expedition Newfoundland | FULL MOVIE | Travel Documentary

Join us on our overland journey to Canada's Newfoundland Island. We spend 3 weeks July 2023 camping and traveling to some of the most beautiful places around the country. We spent 6 months mapping and planning for this trip. Packing in as much adventure as we can.

Trip Powered by REDARC, XVenture Trailers, Powertube TV & Rugged Bound Supply

PLEASE SUBSCRIBE

Our journey starts with a 1860 mile trek just to get to Newfoundland Canada. But first a border crossing into New Brunswick via the Deer island ferry. Our first night in Canada lands us at the Bay of Fundy. Next into Nova Scotia and our first epic Lobster Roll. Arriving in Sydney NS port to get on a 8 hr Atlantic Ferry going to Newfoundland.

Once in Newfoundland our real overland expedition can begin. We make our way up the west coast exploring the Long Island peninsula and small lobster villages. Next the Viking Trail, Great Northern Peninsula along beautiful shores, collapsed sea caves and barren landscapes. We camp at the furthest north Point Normans Cape. Next Lance Aux Meadows a viking village. Then to St. Anthony. Ending the day in Englee. A coastal fishing town that we camp above on a mountain lake.

Then we head off of the northern peninsula down to the abandoned town Round Harbor with our first humpback whale visitor. Landing on the cliffs overlooking the North Atlantic in the town of LaScie. We spend the afternoon watching humpback whales play in the bay. Followed by a visit to iconic Twillingate where a sickness may cut our trip short.

Next Newfoundlands largest offshore island, Fogo Island. After the ferry our first stop is the small town of Fogo. We visit an odd location The Fogo Island Inn. A remote 5 star hotel. We return to Fogo to camp at the Brimstone Head Park. Leaving Fogo we visit Cape Freels Beach. Then we head down to the beautiful island chain town of Newtown. We end our day on the island of Greensport with an afternoon of crazy weather. Our next day takes us through Terra Nova National Park where we find Mountain View’s, an extremely useful visitor center, showers and an aquatic touch tank. Our path then leads around the north rim of the Bonaviata peninsula. We check out the Cape Bonivista Lighthouse and Puffin Colony. Before heading to the Community Pasture full of wild roaming horses and the perfect camp spot. Ending the day with two whales slapping the water with fins and tails for hours just off shore.

Exploring Elliston we find more Puffin and whale! Next we head to Trinity to one of the oldest blacksmith forges around! A few hr drive takes us to Dildo and a bay side camp spot. The next destination is the islands largest city, Saint Johns. Where we see Signal Hill, Cabot Tower and Jelly Bean Row. Then we become true Newfoundlanders by getting Screeched In at Trapper Johns. We end the day camped on a 600 foot high cliff north of St. John’s.

The next day takes us as far East as you can go on the continent to Cape Spear. Then we wind our way down the coast through Ferryland and around to the South Avalon-Burin Oceanic Barrens. Where we end up at Cape Race Lighthouse. We do some trail riding before settling in a small cove full of seals. Our last day on the island takes us to Cape Pine (the furthest south you can drive) and then up to Castle Hill Fort before we Jump on our ferry in Argentia (MV Atlantic Vision) to head back home through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Guinea-Bissau: Natural Beauty Along the Atlantic

Guinea-Bissau, a small but culturally rich nation nestled on the West African coast, unfolds a captivating tale that interweaves its history, geography, people, fascinating facts, and economic journey. The country’s rich history stretches back through centuries, from ancient African kingdoms to colonial rule and a long-fought battle for independence. Its past is marked by resistance, resilience, and a quest for self-determination. The nation's geography offers a diverse and intriguing landscape, from its coastline along the Atlantic Ocean to its lush forests, rivers, and savannas. Guinea-Bissau's geography not only shapes its natural beauty but also influences the lives of its people. Please join us in this comprehensive journey as we delve deep into its historical narrative and traverse its diverse terrains.

Looking at Guinea-Bissau Geographically
Guinea-Bissau, a country in West Africa, offers captivating geographical features that reflect its unique character. Situated along the Atlantic Ocean, this nation boasts a diverse landscape that spans from the coastline to inland plateaus and lush forests. As we delve into Guinea-Bissau's geography, we uncover a land of remarkable diversity and natural beauty. The country covers an area of about 13,948 square miles with a population of a little over 2 million, making it one of the smallest West African nations. Positioned on the western bulge of the African continent, Guinea-Bissau shares its borders with Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east. To the west for about 20 miles, it meets the expansive waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Guinea-Bissau's coastline is characterized by mangroves, estuaries, and sandy shores. This coastal region is not only a source of natural beauty but also vital for the nation's fishing industry, providing sustenance and livelihoods for coastal communities in the country. As we move inland, the landscape transforms into a mix of plateaus, savannas, and dense forests. The Fouta Djallon Plateau, an extension of the larger Fouta Djallon highlands in the region, dominates the central part of the country. This elevated plateau features lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, and fertile plateaus, making it a geographical highlight.
Guinea-Bissau is crisscrossed by several rivers and waterways, including the Geba, Corubal, and Cacheu rivers. The country's low-lying coastal plains are characterized by estuaries and tidal flats, forming a network of water bodies that are essential for transportation, agriculture, and the unique ecosystems they support. The southern part of Guinea-Bissau is covered by dense rainforests, home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. These forests play a crucial role in maintaining the nation's ecological balance and preserving its rich biodiversity.
Guinea-Bissau experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The wet season typically runs from June to October, bringing heavy rainfall and high humidity. In contrast, the dry season, from November to May, is characterized by drier and more comfortable conditions.

Historical Background of Guinea-Bissau
The region that is now Guinea-Bissau has a rich history dating back centuries. It was home to various ethnic groups and kingdoms, including the Balanta, Fula, and Mandinka. One of the notable early empires in the area was the Kaabu Empire, which thrived from the 14th to the 19th century. The Kaabu Empire played a pivotal role in shaping the region's history and culture, leaving a permanent mark on its people and general way of life.
Guinea-Bissau's coastal regions became a focal point for European explorers and traders during the Age of Exploration. Portuguese explorers arrived in the late 15th century, seeking to establish trade routes and exploit the region's resources. The Portuguese influence left a lasting impact on the area, including the introduction of Christianity and the Portuguese language. Guinea-Bissau fell under Portuguese colonial rule in the late 19th century. It was part of Portuguese Guinea, along with Cape Verde. During this period, the Portuguese extracted significant resources, including cashews and groundnuts, from the region.

Weeknights With Wander Gals : 06 Aug 2020 Unearthing Greenland

This evening at Weeknights With Wander Gals, we journeyed on a virtual trip to Greenland as we unearth more about the world's largest island! Let's enjoy the spectacular scenery of this beautiful country, rich in contrasts and full of wonders online together.

Sustainable flight

Air Greenland signs a historic agreement

It is estimated that the aviation industry accounts for 2% of total CO2 emissions worldwide. Air Greenland is aware that the aviation industry contributes to a significant part of the CO2 emissions and sees it as an important task to take our share of responsibility and contribute positively to limiting CO2 emissions. We therefore continue to work to reduce our impact on the environment and the climate.

There are three main solutions to
reducing the climate impact of the aviation industry.
- Route and operational optimisation
- Fleet renewal
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Most recently, we have introduced Sustainable Aviation Fuel, SAF, in our operations through a historic agreement with DCC & Shell Aviation Denmark. The agreement makes Air Greenland one of the leading airlines in the green transition in Europe. The European Union has a 2025 ambition for airlines in Europe to fly on a minimum of 2% SAF, while Air Greenland flies on 5% SAF on all A330neo Tuukkaq flights. In this way, Air Greenland is contributing to the goal of developing Greenland into a sustainable tourist destination.
