First Impressions of Dharamshala, India ???????? | McLeod Ganj
We made it to the mountains in northern India! This adventure started at 3:00 AM. Join us as we explore McLeod Ganj, a town next to the famous Dharamsala. This is the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh at the edge of the Himalayas. Our travel adventure goal was to explore the Himalayas in Nepal, Pakistan, and now India. McLeod Ganj is a beautiful mountain town, so different than anything we have experienced in India so far. It is a beautiful mix of Indian and Tibetan cultures. The exiled Tibetan government headquarters is located here. We’ll show you our hotel, take a walk through the town markets, and find lunch along the way. Before we call it a day, we visit the beautiful Kalachakra Temple, one of many Buddhist temples in this area.

Dharamsala is located in the district of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. Upper Dharamshala is home to Mcleodganj as well as other structures which remind you of its colonial past. The two different parts of the city have something different to offer. As a tourist, it offers you the opportunity to unwind and take in the beauty of the surroundings.
The colossal snow-dressed peaks of Dhauladhar Range overlook Dharamsala at all times. The much talked about Tibetan Buddhist culture can be seen at Mcleodganj, which is dominated largely by the Tibetan community. It is a suburb of the city and is situated at an impressive height of 2,082 meters.
McLeod Ganj, also spelled McLeodganj, is a suburb of Dharamshala in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is known as Little Lhasa or Dhasa because of its large population of Tibetans. It is a beautiful Town to stay in nature and visit around.

Key information with regard to this journey:
Hotel Vatika - Nice hotel located at a distance of half a km before Chamunda Devi temple, good service and owner involvement in the hotel is high. You can connect with them on 8728010808
Chamunda Devi temple - You should keep 2 hours for this, as there is always crowd, we went there at a time when there was no rush, avoid weekends.
Norbulingka institute - its a good idea to stay there, you need to book online, you can do overnight stay there, have their food as well.
Dharamshala - This place is commercial hub, Government offices are located here, so if you are travelling to this region, i will suggest you to stay either at Mcleodganj or Dharamkot or Naddi and avoid staying at Dharamshalla.
We stayed at Himachal tourism guest house by the name club house - nice property - it has parking place available. I checked with few locals to find out about parking space at hotels in Mcleodganj i was told that it is now available in most hotels earlier that was an issue.
Dharamkot - calm place, good to stay here, but i will prefer Naddi over Dharamkot as this 2 km journey between Mc.leodganj to Naddi is narrow road, you face traffic jam etc.
We at our late afternoon lunch at Norling restaurant - famous local joint for Tibbetan food.

Located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Mcleodganj is a scenic hill station that attracts a huge number of tourists from all over the world. Being home to the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness Dalai Lama, Mcleodganj is also a major seat of Tibetan culture. The Tibetan influence can be seen in all parts of the town. Being a popular tourist and pilgrimage destination, Mcleodganj boasts of some amazing cafes and eateries. In today's episode we are exploring a few of them along with our host Anika.
We started the tour with a visit to the Thekchen Choeling Temple which houses the Namgyal Monastery and Tsuglakhang Temple. Here we got to interact with a young monk who has just completed the ordination ceremony.
From there we went to Norling restaurant for some favourite local dishes. It is an old Tibetan restaurant that focuses on classic recipes. Our pick over here was the chicken lamen and veg fingstel. The former was a flat noodles based dish while the later one was a glass noodles and potato based dish. Both of them had mild flavours that mostly came from the sauces and seasonings.
Next we visited the Tibetan Kitchen for more yummy Tibetan food. Here they also serve some South Indian and North Indian options but we settled for some mutton steamed momo and veg bhaklap. The momo were light on the palate, well stuffed and quite juicy. With a wonderful cheese and veggie based stuffing, the deep fried veg bhaklap was irresistible too. They seemed to be a closer cousin of sha phaley.
Our next stop was Kailash Kunga cafe which was suggested to us by our guide at the Norbulingka Institute. This is a small and cosy eatery run by a passionate lady who manages everything along with a very small team. There is a homely feel to the place and the food too. Here we had big momo and veg thukpa. The momo came along with rice soup while the thukpa had hand made noodles in it.
From there we went to Tibetan Quality Bakery which turned out to be a gem of a bakery stacked with fresh and inviting goodies. It is a small stall run by a genial old man who was a chef. At his recommendation we tried the Tibetan special nut bar and yak cheese chocolate cake. Both the dishes were absolutely delightful.
The final stop of the tour was another cosy eatery specialising in crepes.

Mcleodganj is a suburb of Dharamshala and is also known as Little Lhasa because of its large Tibetan population and culture. It is a hub of Buddhist monasteries, temples, cafes, and shops, and offers stunning views of the Dhauladhar mountain range.

Mcleodganj has one of the most mesmerising landscapes in the entire state of Himachal Pradesh and attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year. The towns of Dharamsala, Mcleodganj, Bhagsu Nag and Kangra are situated very close to each other and tourists must cover all these destinations while travelling here.
