Best Of Transylvania: This Is BRASOV! (Romania Travel Vlog)

Medieval Brasov is one of Romania's most beautiful cities, right in the middle of the Carpathian mountains. Brasov is very picturesque and located in Transylvania (yes, it's where Dracula lives). It has maintained its medieval character throughout the centuries. Even though it is quite popular, it is a very relaxing and scenic city. Oh and Kim had been waiting for days to try out this great Romanian dessert (it involved a lot of cream, red fruit coulis and a super gooey filling...) - and we found the perfect spot in Brasov to try it!

We hope you enjoyed this Brasov Romania travel vlog, which is an easy day trip from Bucharest Romania by train if you want. We can't wait to show you Egypt! :) NEXT UP: exploring the historic old town of Cairo, Egypt. Care to join us on another adventure? Join us for our 24 hours in Brasov, Romania travel guide as we highlight how best to spend limited time in the city. Often before we visit somewhere we have a general idea of what we're planning on doing when arriving; however, while heading to Brasov for the 1st time we had no clue. Our 24 hours spent in the city allowed us to cover most of the Old Town, do a bit of hiking and tuck into some delicious food before heading out for nightlife. With such time scarcity we tried to pack in as much as we possibly could. The following are some of the places we had a chance to visit in Brasov, Transylvania (Transilvania):

24 hours in Brasov, Romania Travel Video Transcript:

So welcome to Brasov. We have finally arrived at our destination. It was a really pleasant train ride. I actually slept for most of it because the motion just puts me to sleep like a baby. But Sam did film some of the scenery and it was really pretty. The fall colors are starting to change. So yeah, now we're in the town. We're going to check it out. We're actually feeling a little bit hungry so I think lunch will be the first order of business and then we'll start exploring.

So last time I attempted riding a pennyfarthing we were in Germany early this summer and I was not very successful. I think these are more for decoration and it is actually attached to the bike-rack so you can just leave your bike and stack it there.

So ready for lunch? You better believe it. And we thought we were going to a local Romanian restaurant but it turns out it is Hungarian. I suppose it is close enough they share a border together.

And the bread has arrived. Oh, that is a nice loaf. It looks homemade. It looks nice and homemade. Look at how thick that is.

Take a bite for us. Woah. This is going to be nice with my soup. Mmmm, it's nice. Crispy on the outside and really soft on the inside.

It just needs some butter now.

So my soup has arrived and I'm very excited. It is a Hen's soup with vegetables. And it has huge semolina dumplings. Show us how big? Bigger than my spoon. Look at that.

Wow, let's get a close-up shot of that. Yeah, and it is nice and hot. It is steaming so let's try it.

Mmmmm.

It's almost like a bread dumpling. Or like Polenta. It's good.

So we've had our lunch and now we are checking out the town. This is actually one of those trips that we didn't plan too well. We just decided to come to Brasov spur of the moment. So we don't really know what the main attractions are which means this afternoon we're just going to be walking around and figuring it out as we go.

We've been walking around Brasov for a few hours what are your first impressions so far? Well, already I can tell you I like it a lot more than Bucharest. It definitely has more of a medieval feel here and it is more well preserved as well. You can walk around and there is lots of cool architecture and buildings and great restaurants and pubs to drop in to. Yeah, it is very colorful and lots of renovations happening. Exactly.

So where are we now? We are visiting the narrowest street in Brasov. And we've seen pictures of people jumping and touching both sides of the walls. So we're going to try to both attempt that.

So at its narrowest this is 1.3 meters so let's keep walking towards the most narrow part.

And I think this is probably it.

Something I've really been enjoying about this city so far are all of these little side streets and alleys. It's really easy to escape the busy sections of the city.

Alright guys, so this is Brasov on a Thursday night. It's looking a little bit quiet and I'm not seeing a lot of people but I'm sure there has to be a neighborhood where the pubs are open and people are hanging out. So let's go find one.

So that's a wrap from Brasov. We had a really good time here. It reminded us of a place we had visited in Europe and it took us all day to figure it out. That place is Tallinn, Estonia. Anyways, we had a really good time and tomorrow we're off to Bran Castle. To find Dracula!

This is part of our Travel in Romania series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Romanian culture, Romanian arts, Romanian foods, Romanian religion, Romanian cuisine and Romanian people.

Entry Title: Probably the best city in the world

Entry:

Yesterday after Peles Castle we came to Brasov and parked next to a palace hotel. We couldn't afford it but the parking spot was free so we left the car there and walked around. This city is gorgeous and there are dozens of patio umbrellas advertising Brasov: probably the best city in the world throughout the old town. Super cool.

We found a really nice hotel for two nights and walked around the town square. We had some trouble finding the hotel parking for our car but it turns out it was due to very bad directions and not my own stupidity, which is nice to know. There are a few small detached garages like a house garage, in a crammed parking lot tucked behind a large building. The man at the front desk didn't mention any of those things when giving directions.

Once the car was safe we decided to have a beer at one of the many terrace restaurants in the large square directly across the street from our hotel. They were out of Guinness so I tried a local beer that our hot server recommended and it was really good (and cheap!) while Ally had a disappointing ice cream. I know, how can ice cream been disappointing? I hope to never find out.

Our hotel is pretty sweet except for the lack of air conditioning. This morning we were both awake at 8am because the sun was already overheating the room. The weather has been really warm and a bit muggy so far in Romania, and we appreciate it.

Today we woke up and had our complimentary breakfast before crossing the street to the tourist office. It was closed even though the door was open and it was 10 minutes after opening time. After awhile we learned that today is a national holiday and everything is closed. Ally somehow sweet-talked the guy at the tourist office to give us a map after he kept telling her 10 o'clock. I actually think that was the only English he knew and he just gave Ally a map in the hopes it would make her go away. (It worked).

Once we had the map we walked around the city centre to the sights that didn't need to be open to visit. We checked out some city gates and churches fruther up the hill. At some point we realized the gondola up the mountain was running so we went up that, wedged into the car with a couple dozen children.

At the top there is a Brasov sign much like the famous Hollywood sign and from the sign there are great views of the city below. Apparently you can hike there instead of taking the cable car but we are all about supporting the local economy and saving our energy.

Once we were back down in the city we got in our car and drove to a watch tower high up on the mountain opposite from the Brasov sign. Then we decided to test the GPS out and try to locate the fortress in nearby Rasnov.

The GPS got us to Rasnov and once we were there we could easily see the fortress (and a large Hollywood-esque Rasnov sign). I started driving towards the fortress and we saw a few signs pointing us in the right direction. However the last one we saw pointed us in a direction that didn't make any sense to either of us so I kept on driving along the winding road that went up a mountain. We were pretty confident we were going the right way because obviously the fortress is near the top of the mountain, but then the road started winding downhill several minutes later and still no fortress in sight. After 8 kilometres or so more I decided to turn around and try that last sign we had seen. It turns out it was about 2 minutes from the fortress, pointing in the right direction.

Finally there, we got out and were very happy to find the fortress was open! We walked around and got more great views of the Transalvanian mountains and countryside. It was pretty cool but it would have been good to have more signboards telling us a bit about the fortress or a brochure or something. We like history. We did watch a video about Romanian fortified churches in general, but not this particular one. However as we were aboit to leave we did notice something intriguing: a sign ...
