Diving Bonaire’s Surf Paradise ep. 25

Bonaire’s Kite Beach – a kite surf paradise. Hawksbill turtles, blue parrotfish, gorgeous sponges, and much more. A sudden drop in the wind created a rare opportunity to dive this amazing underwater haven as the kite surfers pack up their gear and wait for the wind to return. Come with us dive this rarely dove stretch of reef between an old Fisherman’s hut and the Red Beryl dive sites. When there is less human impact the reef has an opportunity to rejuvenate. Join us as we dive deep to inspect the health of plate corals – some of the first to be affected by bleaching. You will not be disappointed. For travelers we have incorporated reef ID so you can be ready the next time you visit the Caribbean to dive.

Finally, in this episode we give thanks to all our viewers for enabling us to exceed 1000 subscribers. With the number of YouTube channels out there today this is a huge milestone that will help us grow the channel.

Bonaire's Forgotten Reef ep. 21 | A Diver's Life

Hi

Welcome to my Video: Bonaire's Forgotten Reef ep. 21 | A Diver's Life

A mystery reef and deep wreck on Bonaire! Come to Bonaire and let us take you to this forgotten reef system south of Small Wall and the Black Durgon Inn and north from the Dive Friends Hamlet Oasis Cliff dive site entrance. Due to development, access to this site is extremely limited so divers overlook the site. Since the area is rarely dove, many parts of this reef system, such as Jen’s reef, are spectacular! The area has a little known deep water wreck called Water Barge 101 - also called Cooper’s Barge. We believe we are the first to film this area in 4k and we are almost certain to be the first people to dive and film this wreck at night, the base of which is 46 meters down. So, in watching this, you will be among the first to experience the amazing, haunting beauty of this wreck at night. The colors ignite on the screen with our new 15,000 lumen lights. What will we find under the wreck?

There are other firsts for us in this episode. This is the first use of our newly acquired tec diving skills and equipment as well as the new lights. To film something at this depth you can't be a recreational diver.

We will give you an underwater tour of the area, tell you how to access it, share Captain Don's accounting of the sinking. We will use our new Tec diving skills to take you to this deep wreck in the day and night night. The wreck colors, at night, really pop with our new 15,000 lumen lights!
The island is considering putting a container port in this area. Should they do it? We would love to hear your thoughts.

We would like to take a moment to thank Captain Don Stewart as, although no longer with us, he was instrumental in our being able to tell you the story of the barge's sinking. Captain Don Stewart is the father of Bonaire SCUBA diving. We are fortunate that he wrote an accounting of the water barge's sinking in his book Reef Windows. Look below to see how to order a copy.

Rappel - A Dive Into Bonaire History ep. 20 | A Diver's Life

Rappel, one of the least dove sites in Bonaire’s West Coast and a site once thought undiveable from shore and difficult to even approach with a dive boat. It was not until 1974 when Bruce Bowker made his historic rappel down the 65 foot sheer cliff into the Caribbean Sea that the amazing wonderland was discovered. In this episode we will take you to the cliff face where Bruce made his dive using a rappelling harness and scuba gear to rappel down to be the first person to dive the site. We will take our boat, the Honey Bee, to Rappel and dive in the day and night. The sight is jaw dropping by any measure with a wide bowl-shaped plateau bordered by the high Rappel cliff. We will take you on a tour of the coral garden and the plateau between Rappel and Bloodlet dive sites giving you a front row seat to the marine life that awaits. This is the first video we shot largely in 4k and scaled down to deliver on the Internet. We have never seen video of Rappel that can come close. If you love diving, Bonaire, and amazing coral you will love this video. One look and you will want to book a flight to our amazing island. Be ready to be amazed.

If you want to see amazing things diving you have to get off the well beaten path. Boka Spelonk sits on Bonaire's east coast northwest of Spelonk Lighthouse. High seas, strong winds, and currents usually prevent access to this location. The topography and unspoiled nature of this site makes it a breathtaking dive. Only when the wind is down can you enter and dive this site. In this episode we will take you there. Strap on your fins and come with us to experience the magic.

Going Down On Bonaire's Hooker ep. 24 | A Diver's Life

Bonaire’s famous Hilma Hooker shipwreck. Sank in 1984, she is one of the most dove shipwrecks in the Caribbean. Yet, most who dive her don’t know its history and only dive it in the day. We take you there at night when it is most beautiful and we share it’s history on how it sank. We also show you how to find the Hooker’s huge anchor chain, and anchor, on the second reef and how to get back to the wreck. We also penetrate her seldom dove engine room. We also capture a pack of tarpon on the hunt, buzzing us to use our camera lights to feed on unwary predators. There will be a few other surprise discoveries too. Come see the Hilma Hooker like few have. Let’s go down on Bonaire’s Hooker!

For those underwater cinematographers, this is the first time we filmed with a Sony A7Siii and a wet lens. We ended up on an HLG3 picture profile and used a LUT to convert it to Rec the 709 standard for recording. This camera responded much differently than our Panasonic GH5s. We are considering another video to talk about the transformation.

Bonaire - A Diver’s paradise and more!

We learned about Bonaire during our trip to Aruba. One of the A-B-C islands (Aruba-Bonaire-Curacao) it offers plenty to explore other than diving. Of course diving is the main star of this wonderful island paradise as they have protected their reefs since 1979!

Surface Interval Bonaire's Fontein ep. 34 | A Diver's Life

Fontein, A secret oasis in the middle of Bonaire. Records of its existence go back as far as 1681 when then pirate and explorer, William Dampier, documented visiting Bonaire in his journal, A Voyage Around the World, and writes about the existence of true fresh water spring known today as Fontein. Today, few on Bonaire knows of its existence or only have feint memories of it from childhood. Imagine a desert island with an oasis, at its center ,having 30 foot almond trees, sugar cane, tall green grass, and ancient swimming pools at least as far back as 1928! Constant rains and wind reversals for the past month have made filming virtually impossible. So, in this episode we decided to introduce an A Diver's Life surface interval. What can you do when you can't dive and film? Well, you explore of course! In this episode we will take you on an adventure, on land, to Fontein and share with you its history. We show you old maps, of Bonaire, from archives dating as far back as 1794. We hope you will get to visit Fontein on one of your Bonaire diving surface intervals.

* Important correction: Fontein was not sold to Fundashon Aruba Parke Nacional. The property is still owned by the Mansur family in Aruba. We apologize for the error. *
