Have you ever heard of ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN before? If not, then get ready to learn about how strange it is here in my 170th country.

I've spent the last 24 hours roaming around the capital city of Ashgabat, and IT REMINDS ME EXACTLY OF PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA in just about every way possible. Huge fancy buildings with very few people inside perfectly manicured gardens and boulevards with nobody on them and this eerie feeling that someone is watching over my shoulder 24/7. TURKMENISTAN IS WEIRD.

People had told me that Ashgabat was strange, but I had no idea to what extent it was until arriving here.... Find out everything you need to know about Turkmenistan's capital in this video!

How many of you guys actually knew about this place? Would love to see a show of hands :)

Astaná, Kazajistán / Glimpse of Astana, Capital of Kazakhstan [IGEO.TV]

Astana is the current capital of Kazakhstan.
It is the second coldest capital in the world (after Ulaanbaatar ) with temperatures between -35 to -40 ° C .

The city has not a large number of tourists because it is a city built recently and does not have a large number of attractions , it also has a limited number of quality hotels only has 14 hotels with four or five stars .

There are many buildings in Astana that are under construction already, such as embassies , which are along the River Ishim and some transport and communications infrastructure in the city center . The Avenue of the Republic is the main center of activity in the city , with shops, cafes , restaurants and nightclubs that are worth visiting.

• Bayterek tower : new symbol of Astana.
• Avenue of the Republic acts as the main hub of activity .
• Oceanarium .
• Islamic Center .
• Catholic Cathedral.
• Central National Mosque of Astana.
• Palace of Peace and Reconciliation .

Astana status as Capital, has made increased international interest in it by foreign states near and far, as well as commercial, economic , scientific, technological and cultural town.

During the last ten years, Astana, the new political and administrative center, multiplied its economic and cultural relations with major cities and regions of the world , and raised its prestige in the international arena. The rhythms and the wide range of achievements in Astana , as well as its scope and social orietación were not lost on the international community and in June 1999 the city was awarded the City of Peace of UNESCO.

Since 2000, the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, is a member of the International Assembly of Capitals and Large Cities ( MAG ), an association for cooperation in social and business purposes , other members of that asociaciación are Moscow , Minsk , Bishkek and other large cities of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Glimpse of Astana, Capital of Kazakhstan

Astana became Kazakhstan's new capital in 1997 after the decision was made to move the capital from Almaty. Astana is located in Akmola Province, northern Kazakhstan and experiences an extreme continental climate with long, dry winters and warm summers.

Astana is Kazakhstan's second largest city after Almaty, with a population of under 1million. There are many beautiful and symbolic buildings, designed by famous architects including Norman Foster, along Nurzhol Boulevard. In the middle of this pedestrian zone is Astana's symbol, Baiterek Tower, which can be accessed by purchasing a ticket. Other interesting architecture includes Akorda President's Palace, Nur-Astana Mosque and Khan Shatyr Entertainment Complex.

Despite the harsh climate conditions, Astana is a modern and beautiful city.

The World's Strangest Capital Cities

A capital is a city where a region's government is located. This is where government buildings are and where government leaders work. A region can be defined as a nation, state or province.

A capital city is usually a countries biggest, most popular and greatest city.

Like London, Bangkok, Tokyo or Rome.

However this isn’t always the case with the likes of Australia, New Zealand and the US whos most popular cities are Sydney, Auckland and New York respectively, not being their capital cities.

In this video we will give you some of the worlds wackiest, strangest and bizarre capital cities.

Some of these are strange for political reasons, some for geographical and some are just straight up bizzare and mind boggling.

Astana, Kazakhstan - Unravel Travel TV

Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan. It is located on the Ishim River in the north portion of Kazakhstan, within Akmola Province, though administrated separately from the province as a federal city area. It is the second-largest city in Kazakhstan. Founded in 1830 as Akmolinsk and renamed as Tselinograd in 1961, the city has evolved into a cultural and administrative centre of Virgin Lands Campaign. In 1992, it was renamed as Akmola, the original name meaning white holy place or white abundance. On 10 December 1997, Akmola became the capital of Kazakhstan. On 6 May 1998, it received the name of Astana, which means the capital in Kazakh. Since becoming the capital, Astana has undergone tremendous growth. It is home to many futuristic buildings, hotels and skyscrapers. In addition to serving as government headquarters, Astana is center for industry, sports, healthcare and education. Astana International Airport was designed by late-Japanese architect, Kisho Kurokawa. The Astana Metro is a planned underground construction in Astana.

Astana Railway Station is an important hub for northern Kazakhstan, served by Qazaqstan Temir Zholy trains to most major cities in Kazakhstan, including Talgo expresses to Almaty. International trains leave for Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. There is also a direct train to Urumqi in China's Xinjiang.

Astana, Kazakhstan is the host venue for EXPO-2017, which will focus on the theme Future Energy. The theme is aimed to concentrate on both the future of energy, but also on innovative, but practical energy solutions, and their global impact. EXPO-2017 will be the first time that a major international exhibition of this kind is coming to a country from the former Soviet Union. More than 100 countries and 10 international organizations are expected to participate. Around 2-3 million people are expected to visit the international pavilions from June to September 2017. 25 hectares is planned for the pavilions of Expo 2017. The site has convenient access to Astana’s city center, the international airport, and the railway station. The Expo Site is also linked with a network of Kazakhstan’s inter-city roads to ensure quick access from all over the country. Construction of the pavilions will begin in April 2014 with 20 companies from Kazakhstan and 49 companies from around the globe. Currently, designs are being considered for the grounds of Expo 2017 from architects in the UK, USA, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, and China. On April 24, 2014, the President of Kazakhstan Nurusltan Nazarbayev took part in a capsule-laying ceremony of the Astana EXPO-2017 Exhibition center construction in Astana, which will be located near the Nazarbayev University.

Astana - the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Terra Incognita №15

The idea of creation of a new, modern capital of Kazakhstan belongs to President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

On July 6, 1994, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan decided to move the capital from Almaty to Akmola.

On December 10, 1997, the capital was officially transferred to Akmola. In line with the Presidential Decree signed on May 6, 1998 Akmola was renamed into Astana. The new capital was unveiled internationally on June 10, 1998.

Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan
Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan. It is located on the banks of the Ishim River in the north portion of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region, though administered separately from the region as a city with special status. The 2017 official estimate reported a population of 1,029,556 within the city limits, making it the second-largest city in Kazakhstan, behind Almaty.Astana became the capital city of Kazakhstan in 1997, and since then has developed economically into one of the most modernized cities in Central Asia.Modern Astana is a planned city, like Brasília in Brazil, Canberra in Australia, Washington, D.C. in the United States and other planned capitals. After Astana became the capital of Kazakhstan, the city cardinally changed its shape. The master plan of Astana was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. As the seat of the Government of Kazakhstan, Astana is the site of the Parliament House, the Supreme Court, the Ak Orda Presidential Palace and numerous government departments and agencies. It is home to many futuristic buildings, hotels and skyscrapers.Astana also has extensive healthcare, sports and education systems.
Astana is located in central Kazakhstan on the Ishim River in a very flat, semi-arid steppe region which covers most of the country's territory. It is at 51° 10' north latitude and 71° 26' east longitude. The city encompasses 722.0 square kilometres (278.8 sq mi). The elevation of Astana is 347 metres (1,138 ft) above sea level. Astana is in a spacious steppe landscape, in the transitional area between the north of Kazakhstan and the extremely thinly settled national centre, because of the Ishim River. The older boroughs lie north of the river, whilst the new boroughs are located south of the Ishim.
The metropolitan area centred upon Astana includes the Arshaly, Shortandy, Tselinograd and (partially) Akkol District districts of Akmola Region. The area contains 1.2 million people.

A view of Astana

Astana has been the capital city of Kazakhstan since 1997, when it was moved from Almaty.
But its location in the middle of the Kazakh steppe - together with the harsh winter climate - has made Astana an unpopular choice for many in the country.
The BBC's Rayhan Demytrie offers a guided tour of the capital city - from a bird's-eye view.
