Kalandula Falls Angola

Kalandula Falls, Angola - The 10 Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Africa.
Known as the Duque de Bragança Falls until independence in 1975, Kalandula Falls is one of Angola’s best-known natural features. It is situated on the Lucala River in Malanje Province, and at 344 feet in height and 1,300 feet in width, is one of the largest waterfalls by volume on the continent. Similar in appearance to its larger sister, Victoria Falls, it is a horseshoe-shaped waterfall on the edge of a dense forest, with many separate cataracts and plumes of spray thrown up by the plummeting water. It is most impressive towards the end of the rainy season (from February to April), and visitors are allowed to swim in the pool at the bottom. Kalandula Falls is 10 minutes by taxi from Calandula village, and roughly five hours from Luanda. Book a stay at Pousada Calandula hotel at the top of the falls for a chance to see them at sunrise and sunset. .

HD Angola - Kalandula falls 2nd biggest waterfalls in Africa/Calandula quedas de agua

SYTExperience's trip to Kalandula falls 2nd biggest waterfalls in Africa after the Victoria Falls.
We first crossed the Lucala River, to arrive to the top magnificent Kalandula Falls, then we followed our two local guides and went all the way down to contemplate them from bellow, Awesome.

At the Kalandula falls, some local kids told us that there where another waterfalls, smaller but even more beautiful. We weren't quit sure if we should believe them but, we decided to take a chance and search for them.

That was an adventure on itself. We wondered on dirty bumpy roads for what seemed to be hours but, when we where about to give up... there they were: the Musselenge Falls. Small but provided of such an unique beauty that made it all worth.

If you don't believe me, check out by yourself:

View from the bottom of Quedas de Kalandula in north-central Angola. Considered the 2nd largest waterfall in Africa (after Victoria Falls) it is certainly a natural wonder to behold.

You can reach this view from the Pousada de Kalandula (the only restaurant - hotel near the falls) probably about 20-30 mins hike or 15 minutes by rough and muddy road (4x4 required).

Reach the edge of a quarry cliff to photograph an example of nature's wrath and beauty at Kalandula Falls. Regarded as Africa's largest waterfall by volume, it measures 105 m (344 ft) in height and 400 m (1,300 ft) in width. To reach the sightseeing spots, you have to follow certain pathways and directions through the rocky landscape, but bear in mind that some access bridges were have been destroyed in war. As you reach the site, notice how the waterfall fed by seasonal rains forms a horseshoe shape, which continues to retract due to water's relentless erosive power. You can also hire a local to help you reach the bottom of the falls.
