Located on the western shore of Lake Garda, Limone sul Garda is immersed in a lush Mediterranean landscape and is among the most admired and visited places of the lake by lovers of sport, relaxation and nature. The particularly mild climate throughout the year has made it famous for the production of citrus fruits, grown since 1700 in the typical lemon houses, still in operation and open to the public.

Visit the picturesque alleys of the old town, relax on its Promenade full of flowers and palm trees, enjoy an aperitif and a delicious dinner by the lake. There is no shortage of taste, the traditional dishes are appetizing and genuine, based on fish and PDO extra virgin olive oil, and toasts are made with excellent wines. From the typical restaurants in the streets of the center, irresistible aromas emanate, inviting you to sit down and enjoy the hospitality of Lake Garda.

In addition to relaxation and food and wine, Limone is ideal for lovers of outdoor activities: there is a wide choice of walks among the olive groves, guided trekking on the trails, and water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. There are numerous beaches where you can recharge your batteries in the sun and dive into the refreshing waves of the lake. The 5 Legambiente flags have rewarded the purity of the water, while the European EMAS mark certifies the commitment to environmental sustainability.

Among the things not to be missed is a guided tour of the Limonaia del Castèl (the lemon house), which is easily reached from the center of the village. Don't miss a bike ride on the famous cycle-pedestrian path overhanging the lake, which runs for three kilometers from the center of the village to the border with Trentino.

Let yourself be enchanted by history and traditions thanks to the wide cultural offer. Visit the museums, churches, and the Comboni Centre with our Smart Tours, 5 thematic itineraries that can be easily downloaded onto your smartphone and that will lead you to discover an exciting territory!

Since the 10th century the name Limon appears in many documents, often transformed into Limonum, Limono and Limone. According to some, the name derives from limen = border or from lima = river. However, these are not derivatives of the fruit 'lemon', but, according to the most recent studies in toponymy, rather reflections of an ancient voice of Celtic origin limo, lemos = 'elm'; hence Limone = place characterized by the presence of elms. The name of the town has been Limone San Giovanni since 1863; in 1904 it took on its current name of Limone sul Garda.

In the nineteenth century, lemon production went through a crisis caused by 'gummosis', a disease that affected almost all the plants in 1855; then there was competition from lemons in southern Italy and the discovery of synthetic citric acid, which drastically reduced exports.

The Legend of Limone

Legend has it that the love of the god Benaco and the nymph Fillide gave birth to twins, Grineo and Limone. In their father's mind, the first should have devoted himself to fishing, the second to agriculture, but the two, since their adolescence, preferred hunting on the slopes of Mount Baldo, where Limone was attacked and killed by a wild boar. In despair, Fillide pleaded with her husband to bring her son back to life: she gave him an infusion prepared with mysterious celestial flowers and the miracle was accomplished. Promptly obeying his father's wishes, Limone settled down in front of Baldo, in a gentle inlet sheltered from the winds, and cultivated the fruit that took his name.

Discover Yvoire
The castle of Yvoire dominates Lake Geneva
Yvoire Castle dominates Lake Geneva
Yvoire is a flowery medieval village on the shores of Lake Geneva, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France
Located on the French shore of Lake Geneva, between Geneva and Evian, the village of Yvoire is nicknamed the pearl of the lake.
Built at the beginning of the 14th century, the medieval city of Yvoire has more than 700 years of history, witnessed by its ramparts, its fortified gates and its imposing 14th century castle.
During your walk in Yvoire, take advantage of the pretty shops and taste the local specialties in the restaurants for a wonderful day of relaxation.

Flowers and history
A flowery medieval village, Yvoire has been rewarded many times and is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France for the charm of its narrow streets which lead to Lake Geneva and its old stones which invite the visitor to immerse themselves in the history of Savoy.

In the fortified town, you will travel from the Middle Ages by discovering the gates and ramparts that protected the village and castle, up to modern times to discover a picturesque site that has very well preserved its character.

A magical break facing Lake Geneva
Finally, take advantage of one of the terraces to sip a drink or dine facing the grandiose panorama of Lake Geneva, the Jura, Switzerland and the Alps.

Yvoire is a magical place that combines authenticity and history. Time stands still...

History of the castle of Yvoire
Built from 1306 during the fortification of the village by the Count of Savoy Amédée V, the castle of Yvoire had the military objective of monitoring navigation and controlling the road which linked Geneva to the upper Rhone valley and to Italy. .

For several centuries, the village of Yvoire was at the heart of several strategic or religious wars between French, Bernese, Genevans, as well as the houses of Faucigny, Dauphiné and Savoie.

In 1591, a fire ravaged the building, which only regained its current form in the 20th century, when Félix Bouvier d'Yvoire undertook several interior and exterior renovation works, including the installation of the roof and the corner watchtowers. in 1939.

The mystery of Yvoire
You will not enter the castle of Yvoire.
Property of the Yvoire family since the 17th century, it is not open to visitors (and it is not a hotel in Yvoire). This contributes to the mystery of the medieval village of Yvoire…

Lauterbrunnen is perhaps the most beautiful village in Switzerland.
Located in the swiss Alps valley, it is also known as the waterfalls village as it has 72 waterfalls that look absolutely gorgeous.

Foroglio is a real architectural jewel, hence the name, the village of the seven dwarfs from the story Snow White by the Brothers Grimm .

Foroglio, Switzerland is a small village away from the hustle and bustle of the larger cities and towns of Ticino, such as Lugano, Bellinzona, and Locarno. The beauty of this place comes from its peace and quiet, which allows you to slow down and enjoy it all. While it is becoming more and more popular over time, the site is rather secluded and would take time for a tourist to reach. It is not one of the first stops for tourists.

Where is Foroglio, Switzerland located?

The town of Foroglio lies in Bavona Valley (Val Bavona), arguably the wildest one among the valleys of Ticino. This spectacular side valley is part of the Maggia Valley. The whole region is part of the Lepontine Alps – a mountain range that covers various parts of Switzerland (Valais, Ticino, Uri, Graubünden) and Italy (Piedmont and Lombardy).

Bavona Valley

Let’s talk more about Bavona Valley now.

This place, a trough valley, is lined with granite walls left and right. The Bavona Valley has seen massive rocks fall from mountains time and time again. Sometimes the stones are as big as houses. Locals then build new houses next to the stones after they fall. Locals refer to it as Splui. As such, it is no surprise that the houses in this area are built from stone.

What can I do in Foroglio, Switzerland?

The Foroglio Waterfall is definitely the highlight of Foroglio, Switzerland. Foroglio Waterfall plunges from 108 meters high down the rock. This picturesque location is set within a beautiful village filled with stone houses.

Summary

Switzerland’s Foroglio is a scenic spot in the Italian-speaking region of Ticino. It is well worth a visit, especially if you are staying in Locarno or Ascona during your holiday.
Foroglio is located in the rocky, trough-shaped Bavona Valley. Waterfalls, stone houses, and granite walls abound in this valley. In spite of not being as popular as Verzasca Valley, Bavona Valley is equally beautiful. There are even those who claim it is more beautiful.

Switzerland is a small country full of surprises and wonderful villages. Since decades, Switzerland has been attracting numerous tourists from allover the world. It is the Alps that fascinates most of the visitors but also the very well preserved villages. Gruyères is THE place to experience the medieval vibes in Switzerland. The castle, the museums and furthermore the foodie world of Gruyères are really exciting to experience, do not forget to try fondue, Gruyère cheese and double cream! Zermatt is the most popular village on this list. Visit the many panoramas over the Swiss Alps, see the Matterhorn or simply explore the village of Zermatt itself! Discover the many beautiful traditional wooden houses scattered around this Swiss village! Visit what used to be the smallest municipality of Switzerland: Corippo. Corippo is located in the Valle Verzasca in Ticino. It's a wonderful village full of stone houses and very interesting: ONLY 12 people live in there! Surely, it's not crowded there. Saint-Ursanne is another medieval village; the town that could be in a fairytale. Saint-Ursanne is built along the river doubs and charms with its many medieval houses and wonderful abbey. Guarda - the town of Schellenursli - in the lower Engadin is located in the Rumantsch speaking region of Switzerland. It's far away the urban centres and very quiet. Best to visit during Summer or on Chalandamarz! Grimentz is THE stereotypical village of Switzerland. It's located up in the Swiss Alps and charms with its many traditional wooden houses. The houses are all decorated with red flowers; cheesy and alluring! Lauterbrunnen is another touristy favorite. The village is small but it's located in the Valley of 72 Waterfalls! Enjoy the scenery with its many waterfalls and greens! Do not forget to go up to Wengen and the Jungfraujoch! Epesses is located in Switzerland's wine region at lake Geneva! It's a wonderful village in the middle of the vineyards and definitely offers you enough viewpoints over the wine terraces, lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps. Stein am Rhein is also a very medieval and cultural village. The old town is perfectly preserved and charms with its many painted houses. Spectacular is the No e Wili play that is held on a 10-25 years base. Enjoy swimming in the river Rhine or dining at the Castle Hohenklingen. MORCOTE is the most beautiful Swiss village on this Top 10 list! It's located at Lake Lugano and charms with its appearance of being built at the hill. Stunning is the church Maria del Sasso, the wonder garden in the Parco Scherrer and furthermore the many viewpoints on the hill. Morcote is by the way considered not very touristy. Discover Alberobello
Alberobello is a small Italian town like any other at a first glance. The streets are narrow and hilly, houses are white, the weather is pleasant and life is slow.

Alberobello trulli
But if you take a closer look to some of the houses, you will think you landed in a fantasy book. Small houses with conical roofs are dotted everywhere around you.

Trulli in Alberobello
Upon closer investigation, you will find that these small dwarf houses are actually real and people still live in them. In case you have decided to see what a hobbit house could look like, you should go to Alberobello the land of dwarf houses is a small town in Puglia, a region in Southern Italy, not far from the city of Bari.

It is famous for its unique small historical houses called trullo (plural trulli). The name of the city originated from the medieval Latin name of the region “siva arboris belli” (The wood of the tree of war).

Trulli Houses
The trulli are drystone dwellings with conical roofs. A typical trullo has thick walls and is either round-shaped or square. In Alberobello most of the trulli are square-shaped.

Usually a trullo is a single-storey small building. It is technically hard to construct a multi-storey trullo. There are only few two-storey trulli in the town. The second floor in these constructions is made of wood, but this happens rarely. It is easier and more practical to construct several small trulli than a big one.

That is why big families in Alberobello were living not in one single trullo, but rather in trulli groups. Big families could have a group of dozen trulli constructed next to each other. The interior of a trulli is mainly made from wood. The roofs are not painted, but the walls are traditionally painted white.

Trullo is a rural building type. It was meant to serve as field shelters and storehouses. Alberobello is a unique case where they became the main lodgment for the local population.

Trulli History
The history behind Alberobello is of course connected with money and cunning Italian aristocrats.

When in the 14th century the previously uninhibited area became under the control of the Count of Conversano, he and his successors decided not to construct permanent dwellings here for their peasants, as far as the taxes for the lands with no permanent settlements were lower, than those with officially recognized towns. In order to pay small taxes Alberobello was supposed to be classified as an uninhabited area. For this reason trulli in Alberobello were being constructed in a specific way.

Trulli were being constructed from roughly worked limestone, because this material could be easily dismantled and later reused for reconstruction of the dwellings. Because of the jiggery-pokery of their landlord the inhabitants of Alberobello have already been living in trulli for several centuries.

Up to the mid 17th century there were only several dozen trulli in the area, but during the following century the population of the town rapidly increased.

By the end of the 18th century the town had a population of 3,500 inhabitants. In 1797 Alberobello was finally granted a status of a town, but up to that date its population was living in trulli, which could be easily and quickly disassembled if it was necessary.

Today, AlberobelIo is one of the best preserved historical urban areas of this type in Europe. The historical value of the town increases because the Alberobello trulli are still serving as houses for the local population.

I thank you for watching, please excuse my breathing, I don't do it on purpose, health problems ☹️ , see you soon in other unique places, be blessed, I love you all, peace to all, with respect , Sebastian

Population: permanent 518 inhabitants. (December 31, 2020)
German language
Altitude 1200m
Canton Valais

Idyllic, the mountain village of Ernen is located on the left side of the Goms valley, on the heights of Fiesch. This locality is part of the Binn Valley Nature Park and is also known as a music village, with its music festival welcoming artists from all over the world.

Description
For centuries, Ernen was a stopover on the road to the Furka and Grimsel Passes. With the opening in 1861 of the Furka road on the other side of the valley, the place found itself on the sidelines and hardly developed any more. The municipal authorities understood early on the value of authenticity of the village and established in 1943 the necessary protective measures to preserve the cultural value of the buildings of the former chief town of the valley.

Ernen is characterized by its sunny location on a natural terrace above the Fiesch basin. Well-maintained gardens and orchards form a semi-circular setting towards the valley. In the center of the village are close to each other typical buildings of the region, generally oriented towards the southwest. Plots and gardens reduce the density of buildings. The central square, in the heart of the village, is exceptional and is one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. It is lined with remarkable buildings, including the “Tellenhaus” (the house of William Tell), with one of the oldest representations of the Swiss national hero.

The sumptuous Sankt Georg church, built between 1510 and 1518 in a late Gothic style, is located slightly higher and, in fact, clearly visible from afar.

Ernen is known as a musical village far beyond the country's borders. Once a year, the association “Musikdorf Ernen” organizes a classical music festival.

ISOS
ISOS is the Federal Inventory of Built Sites of National Importance to be Protected in Switzerland. This inventory is compiled by the Federal Office of Culture (OFC). The ISOS designates the most valuable sites in Switzerland. It now includes nearly 1,200 sites of all sizes, from hamlets to large cities. The Inventory makes it possible to understand the evolution and identify the identity of the sites it identifies. It thus contributes to safeguarding the architectural diversity of Switzerland and promotes sustainable planning, as well as a culture of quality construction.
