This video was shot 3 weeks before the invasion of Ukraine. I do NOT support this war, and my thoughts go out to our friends in Ukraine. We love you.

Welcome to YAKUTSK, (SIBERIA) - AKA the WORLD'S COLDEST CITY. More than 300,000 people live here, where winter temperatures (like right now) reach as low as -55 Celsius.

I went to Yakutsk a few weeks ago with my good friend Ammar from @YesTheory. The city is so remote that we had to take a 9-hour domestic flight from Moscow to get there.

As soon as we arrived in this cold winter wonderland, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Completely frozen trees, frozen pipelines, frozen cars… frozen everything!! But underneath the layers of jackets are extremely friendly faces and warm smiles. And that’s what I came here to learn about - humanity. Who are the Yakutian people? How do they survive these brutally cold winters?

This video takes you on a 4-day journey through the world’s coldest city - Yakutsk. I think you will be quite surprised to discover that Yakutsk is actually a normal city, just like anywhere else. It just happens to be extremely cold!

Thank you to my local friends Maria #1 and Maria #2 (from @LifeinYakutia) for showing me around! And thanks to Andrey for the awesome work behind the camera. And thank YOU so much for watching — this video is really special to me and many long hours of work have gone into it.

Have a great Sunday and I’ll see you next week.

Journey from Yakutsk, The Coldest City in The World, to Lena Pillars

The next episode of the journey around Far East of Russia in 2021 is devoted to Yakutsk, the coldest city in the world, and Lena Pillars - one of the greatest landmark of the Yakutia, which is also known to be the largest country subdivision with the square of 3083523 km² (1190555 mi²). Everything seems to be the most in this remote part of Russia. The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) has dozens of incredible landmarks, and one of the most recognizable place of interest is Lena Pillars - rock formation on the bank of the Lena River. Having explored Yakutsk, I hitchhiked all the way to Lena Pillars, using boats at some stretches. Enjoy!

What People in the World’s COLDEST PLACE Eat? (Food in Yakutsk, Russia)

Check out Masterworks and skip the waitlist using our link:

What food do people eat in Yakutia, Siberia. We headed out in to Yakutsk, Russia, the coldest city on Planet Earth, with our local friend Maria to find out more about Yakut (Sakha) cuisine and culture. This region is almost completely covered in Permafrost, meaning growing staple crops here is near on impossible (due to the fact the soil is basically ice). Therefore the food here in the World's coldest region is mainly based on meat and dairy, with few fruits or vegetables. However the ecology of Yakutia is incredible meaning the quality of the products is so high, you can eat nearly everything raw and people here do exactly that, from raw fish, to every part of the meat - including liver and intestine! Life in this beautiful region of the world may seem difficult, but the locals love it and love their cuisine alike, let's explore it!

FULL DOCUMENTARY THE COLDEST CITY ON EARTH -71.2°C SIBERIA | YAKUTSK | RUSSIA | SAKHA | TRAVEL

YAKUTSK - The Coldest City

Yakutsk is the capital city of Yakutia, Sakha Republic, located in Siberia. The only large city in the world built on top of permafrost. Permafrost is ground that continuously remains below 0°C and does not have to be the first layer that is on the ground. It can be from an inch to several miles deep under the Earth's surface.

Yakutsk is known as the coldest city in the world. Winter temperatures regularly fall to -40°C, and the lowest ever recorded was a staggering -63°C.

At minus 35C, the air will cold enough to numb exposed skin quickly, making frostbite a constant hazard, photograph only 15 minutes or less at a time in the subzero temperatures before the camera froze. And at minus 45C, even wearing glasses gets tricky. The right clothing is crucial. For maximum warmth, it's all about fur: reindeer boots, muskrat hats, and fox coats.

When it’s -50/-60°C outside, an unprotected car freezes within minutes: all liquids inside thicken, the rubber parts become brittle and fall apart. October until April they park their car with the engine running, leaving the key inside and the alarm on, using a second key to open the car when they want to get back in.

After winter ends it will come springtime with pleasant weather, but comes with its own problems: the thawing of all the ice and snow can result in severe floods.

YAKUTSK-Kota Terdingin

Yakutsk - the capital of Yakutia (drone view)

Yakutsk is the capital of the largest Russian region in terms of territory, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
Sakha is the Yakut word for the people and the republic.

The area of Yakutia is 3,000,000 km², and the population is only 1 million, a third of which lives in Yakutsk. If translated from the language of numbers, Yakutia is 5 times larger than Ukraine, the largest European country. Yakutia is the size of India and has 1,340 times more people than Yakutia. If Yakutia becomes a separate country, it will immediately fly into the top 10 and knock Argentina off 8th place.

The majority of Yakuts live in Yakutsk. And also Evens, Evenks, Russians, Buryats and quite a lot of migrants from ex-Soviet Central Asia - everyone understands Russian and almost everyone speaks it fluently. Among themselves, Yakuts mostly speak Yakut. And in general, the language is absolutely alive: newspapers and other media, signs, cinema, voices in transport and songs of punk bands - Yakut will be around you all the time.

Ancient Yhyakh (Ысыах) Festival in YAKUTIA / RUSSIA

In Yakutia there is an ancient festival that is held on the summer solstice usually on or around June 21-22-23. The festival started 1,000 years ago but during Communist times was forbidden.

The festival draws thousands of people from all over Yakutia and beyond to not only enjoy the festivities but also participate in the games and celebrations.

We spent a full day there including the sun rise. It was one of the most awesome events of my life.
