S1 – Ep 220 – Philippolis – A Little Town Situated in the Middle of South Africa!
The gravel road I had planned to take from Vanderkloof Dam to Philippolis was closed to the public so we had to take a detour of almost 200km to reach our destination, which meant we would only arrive in the dark. This actually gave us the opportunity to see this little town in a different light to how we normally see the places we visit. Since we arrived too late to explore, we booked into our accommodation at the Philippolis Hotel for the night, enjoyed pizza for supper and woke up ready for a day to explore. Situated in the middle of South Africa, this amazing town has a rich history and so many places of interest. S1 – Ep 219 – Vanderkloof - The Highest Dam Wall in South Africa!
When we left Orania we decided to go and see the highest dam wall in South Africa at the Vanderkloof Dam. We were not expecting to see this magnificent structure. We took a slow drive through the small town of Vanderkloof and also visited the Holiday Resort at the dam. Unfortunately it looked as if the resort was not functional anymore although there were a few people enjoying the place. We then left the resort and town and headed for the dam wall. What a privilege it was to drive over this magnificent piece of engineering! On our way to our next destination we crossed an absolutely stunning single-lane bridge which crossed the Orange River just below the Vanderkloof Dam. S1 – Ep 184 – Steynsburg – Surrounded by Mountains and Hills in the Eastern Cape’s Karoo!
The hills and mountains as you approach Steynsburg are amazing. When we entered we could see that it was surrounded by them. This small town is located in the Eastern Cape’s Karoo and we love the Karoo. After filling up with fuel, we made sure to find the train station. The station building must have been a grand old building in its day but it is not in use anymore and is not in good shape. We then took a drive to the Town Hall and found it also not to be functioning anymore. The churches seemed to be in good condition except for one which looked totally abandoned. The caravan park was another spot we were very keen on visiting but it too was sadly not open for business anymore. I was happy to see that the local authority is working on the roads and improving them. Despite the town in some need of serious attention and upliftment, it was a very interesting visit to Steynsburg. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #steynsburg #easterncape #karoo #mountains

S1 – Ep 202 – Gariep Dam – A Town on the Northern Bank of the Orange River!
We arrived late the evening at our accommodation at Gariep Dam and ordered delicious food which was delivered to our doorstep by the owner of a local restaurant. The next morning we started to explore this beautiful town located on the Northern bank of the Orange river. This town was the original dam-building community who did not want to leave after the dam was completed. So that is how it came to be. The view of the village from the top of the hill was breathtaking, not to mention the size of the dam, which is the largest in South Africa. We then took a drive through the holiday resort on the banks of the dam, it was simply fantastic. The Karoo Queen houseboat in the harbour was a beauty and what a privilege to take a tour through it. I would love to stay on board that luxury cruiser. Then we had to go and see the dam wall and it did not disappoint. It is a magnificent feat of human engineering. Unfortunately our time at the Gariep Dam came to an end way too quickly and we had to move on to our next port of call. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #gariepdam #freestate #orangeriver #karooqueen

S1 – Ep 211 – Reddersburg – A Small Free State Town with Magnificent Churches!
After leaving Dewetsdorp we turned off to see if we could visit the Jimmie Roos School but special permission is required, so we were not allowed access. Then we took off and found a gravel road which took us on a beautiful drive to Reddersburg. On this road we got to see some amazing birdlife, an absolutely beautiful cow which had a serious attitude and some stunning scenery. We could not believe our eyes when we saw the magnificent churches in this small Free State town. Driving through the streets we could also see a proud community working together. The Sarie Marais Hotel is under new management and they were finishing off the renovations when we visited and were open for business. Then we stopped off at the N6 Farm Stall, where they explained to us how they were helping the local community by selling their products. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #reddersburg #freestate #jimmieroos #travelongravel

Passage through Lesotho
DROVE from from Cape Town to Nieu Bethesda, Lady Grey and drove Jouberts Pass and then via Naudes Pass to Tenahead and then up Lundeans Nek to Tele bridge border post and into Lesotho. Across to malealea, and then traversed cross country to Semonkong and the 192m Maletsunyane Falls, highest in Africa, before crossing again to Katse Dam. Up and over a 3 090 m pass to Roma and home via Zastron, Willowmore, Calitzdorp and home.
4 000km trip in our Suzuki Jimny and crossing 10 huge passes including a 3 090 m pass.

With “God’s thumbprint on the mountain” you could only expect Lady Grey to be peaceful, spiritual and magical...
Beautifully set in a valley with a backdrop of mountains, many trees, a number of interesting old houses and more gravel than tarred roads, Lady Grey is the most scenic of all the villages in the area. It has a very interesting history and inscriptions on old headstones in the Cemetery confirms it.

S1 – Ep 155 – Vosburg – We Found the Fun Pan where they Race!
After our amazing lunch at Die Ketel, we decided to go and find the Fun Pan which is about 10km outside of Vosburg. We were shocked and surprised to see how big it was! This is the place where the locals from the whole district come to race with their cars once a year. We heard about the Fun Pan in Victoria West and were hoping to find it. The next morning before leaving the area I was given a tour of the museum by our host. It's a small, but really interesting place to visit. I loved the old glass hearse which is so unique and still in such good shape. On our way out of town we stopped to see the Vosburg Dam and the water points where the town gets their water from. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #vosburg #funpan #dieketel

S1 – Ep 183 – Rosmead and Schoombee – Two Stations we Discovered While Travelling!
We left the amazing town of Middelburg and started our journey to Steynsburg. What we were not expecting were the two stations we discovered while travelling. Rosmead station is a functional station dealing with the transportation of Manganese from the mines at Postmasburg through to the harbour in Port Elizabeth. We were also surprised to see that there is a community living in all the old houses at this station. Not too far down the road we found yet another station but Schoombee station is not a functional station anymore. As a matter of fact, this station has not been a working station for many years. It has big trees growing amongst the tracks but I was so happy to see the old water tank which supplied the steam trains with water still out there and still intact, albeit very rusty. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #rosmead #schoombee #station #train
