Number 7. National Museum
If you wonder about things to do in Zadar, visit the National Museum. This is a regional museum that shows more about the natural history, culture, and art of the Zadar area as a whole. It was started in the 1960s, but local scientists and historians have been involved with it since the 1800s. Part of the attraction is the Zadar City Museum, where you can see a lot of artifacts from the tumultuous Renaissance and Baroque times, when Mongols and Ottomans threatened the city.

Number 6.ST. ANASTASIA;S CATHEDRAL
St. Anastasia's Cathedral
The cathedral in Zadar is built on the site of a basilica that was built in the year 300 and could become a World Heritage Site. The construction of the building you see today began in the 1100s. It is another example of the fine Romanesque architecture in Zadar. Inside, you can see a mosaic from the first basilca that was made by early Christians.

Number 5.MUSEUM Museum of Ancient Glass
Croatia has a lot of Roman history, and many of the glass artifacts found during digs have made their way to this modern museum, which is in the 1800s-era Cosmacendi Palace. In modern displays, you can see cups for drinking, a cup for mass, jars, and tiny, intricate vials that can hold anything from medicine to skin creams.

Number 4. St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's is part of a Benedictine Monastery that was started in the 11th century. It is on the eastern edge of Zadar's forum. During the Second World War, the building was damaged, but it was fixed up and now has one of the city's most prized exhibits. The Permanent Exhibition of Religious Art has many religious objects made of gold and silver, as well as tapestries, manuscripts, reliefs, and embroideries from the 700s to the 1700s.

Number 3. City Walls and Gates
Zadar is unique in that it was never taken over by the Ottomans. This is because the Venetians built a strong defense system in the 1500s. A lot of the city is still protected by a wall of white limestone that goes all the way around it. The Land Gate and the Sea Gate are the only places where the wall breaks. The Land Gate must have been just as impressive 500 years ago as it is now.

Number 2. Roman Forum
The Roman forum in Zadar is the largest one east of the Adriatic Sea. It was established by Emperor Augustus at the turn of the first century according to two inscriptions found at the excavation site when the forum was rediscovered in 1930. During the Second World War, bombs damaged the space. It was cleaned up, and by the 1960s, the forum started to take shape again.

Number 1. THE CHURCH OF ST. DONATUS
The church of St. Donatus
The number one thing to do in Zadar is visiting the church of St. Donatus. This early-Byzantine church was built in the year 800, and it is still in almost perfect condition. Over time, the tall, round shape of St. Donatus has become a symbol of Zadar and a source of pride. It's the first building you'll see on postcards. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy the simple beauty of this building from before the Roman Empire.

Our visit Zadar travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Croatian), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting churches, parks, the old town, quirky neighborhoods, museums, observation points and roman ruins. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Zadar tourism brochure, Zadar itinerary or Zadar, Croatia city tour also known as Zadar, Hrvatska.

10 Things to do in Zadar, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Let's visit Zadar, Croatia together as we cover 10 of the best things to do in Zadar in this travel guide.

Our first stop was Queen Jelena Madijevka Park which has the distinction of being the oldest public park in Croatia. The park looks over the Land Gate which is the main entrance to the Old Town.

During the 16th century, the Venetians helped Zadar withstand the Turkish sieges by building a large water cistern with five wellheads, giving this square its name. These five wells were used to supply the city with water until the year 1838.

Among the ruins of the forum, you might notice there’s one particular Roman column that still stands intact. This one is called the shame post which during the Middle Ages was used to chain and humiliate people who had committed crimes.

The Church of St. Donatus sits in the middle of the Roman Forum and it dates back to the beginning of the 9th century. The church was built in the Byzantine-style in a circular shape - typical of the early medieval construction in Dalmatia. This church has seen many uses from warehouse to museum, but these days it hosts concerts.

Located right next to St. Donatus, the bell tower is actually part of St Anastasija's Cathedral. Climbing this Romanesque bell tower is not for the faint of heart, especially once you reach the spiralling metal staircase on the last floor, but if you make it, you are rewarded with views of the town and the marina.

The meal came to 32 Euros for two mains, two glasses or red wine, and two desserts. The truffle gnocchi was our favourite truffle dish in Croatia.

When it comes to sunset, there are quite a few spots to choose from. We really enjoyed the pier right across from the Roman Forum, however, the Sea Organ is another popular spot. If you do go to the Sea Organ for sunset, you can also check out the Greeting to the Sun, which is another unusual art installation.
This solar-powered work of art lights up in an array of colours once the sun goes down.

Lastly, we leave you with a few scenes of Zadar at night.

We hope you enjoyed this video and we’ll see you in the next one as we continue our travels in Croatia.

Under Venetian rule between the 15th and 18th centuries, Zadar became the second-most important city in the Empire after Venice. The town had a sophisticated defensive system as the answer to the rise of Ottoman Turkey, and as part of the city walls, you can still see the gorgeous Landward Gate with the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of the Venetians.
Do not forget to visit the famous Zadar sea organ, an experimental musical instrument and architectural object playing to the rhythm of the sea. Its trumpets are placed under giant marble steps and descend to the water. Close to them, you can feel how they sound in different tones as the waves rise and fall on the seafront.
Next to the Sea Organ is another famous Zadar landmark, the Monument to the Sun also called the Greeting to the Sun. Completed in 2008, it comprises a 22-meter diameter circle with photovoltaic solar modules underneath. Get here in time to catch the scene of the Sun over Zadar, which Alfred Hitchcock, the famous English filmmaker, described as one of the most beautiful ever.
Don't miss a visit to the Forum Romanum when discovering the legacy of the ancient Roman rise. Due to its undisturbed layout, it is the most faithful image of an ancient city. It is the largest forum in Croatia (95m by 45m), commissioned by the first Roman Emperor Augustus, in the 1st century AD. The square was the center of public life, the largest on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea.
The Cathedral of St. Anastasia from the 12th to the 13th century, the largest church in the entire Dalmatia - the coastal area of Croatia, is also in contact with the historic settlement. However, the church's origins date back to a Christian basilica built in the 4th and 5th centuries AD, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in Croatia.
You can climb 180 steps to reach the top of the 56m freestanding bell tower for exceptional panoramic views over the city, the old town, and the neighboring islands. It is worth it.
On the northeastern part of the Forum Romanum, built on the square from which the material was also used, you can discover – The Church of St. Donatus from the 9th century. At 27m in height, it is the largest Pre-Romanesque building in the country. The circular shape characterized by simplicity and technical primitivism is typical of the early medieval age in Dalmatia.
Just opposite The Church of St. Donatus stands Saint Mary church with a large monastery founded in 1066. And if you're a real history buff, head to the Archaeological Museum next to the complex. Founded in 1832, it is the second oldest museum in Croatia. Here you will find precious artifacts from the development of Zadar from prehistoric times through the extensive Roman settlement to the early Middle Ages.

Top 15 famous places to visit in Zadar, Croatia

What is Zadar known for?
Zadar is the entry point for the majority of Croatia's many dance music festivals. From here, it's an hour to the island of Pag, best known for its cheese (more on that below) and long, pebbly, Zrce beach, which sees the return of Hideout Festival, along with the hip-hop happening, Fresh Island Festival, this year.
Is Zadar a good holiday destination?
It's one of the coolest places on the Adriatic. In Croatian terms, it's improbably crowd-free. The city sunsets are memorably beautiful. And its mix of cliffs, coves and ancient Roman streets are worlds apart from Split or Dubrovnik's cruise ship crowds.
Is Zadar good for families?
Zadar, Croatia with Kids. You may not think of Croatia as a family destination, but after our visit I can attest it is one of the best places to plan a family vacation with children. On the western coast of Croatia lies the extraordinary city of Zadar.
