Welcome to Essentuki! In this episode of the film about my road trip to the Caucasus, we will explore the resort town of Yessentuki, which is famous throughout the Caucasus, its healing springs of mineral water. Essentuki is the city and administrative center of the Caucasian Mineral Waters eco-resort region, which is widely known for its healing, carbonaceous, salt-alkaline springs. Unlike the same Pyatigorsk, Essentuki do not strike the imagination abundance of historical landmarks, spa facilities almost never attacked the bohemian, and in general, seriously invested in this picturesque place on the shore of the River Great Essentuchek, began only in the early XX century. Maybe that's why life in Yessentuki flows more quietly and thoroughly than in other, more publicized resorts of the Caucasus. Enjoy the tour!

Travel during a pandemic: the city of Zheleznovodsk
Six months ago, about 10 thousand cases were registered in Russia every day. At that time, not only were flights canceled, but it was also forbidden to drive a car without a pass. I stayed at home apart from short trips to nearby shops. If someone told me in those times that I will be traveling around the country at the end of the year, when every day, more than 25 thousand cases will be registered in Russia, I probably would not have believed it.
In December, I decided to attend the conference held in the city of Zheleznovodsk during the pandemic.
Zheleznovodsk is a small resort town in the North Caucasus, which has always been very popular with Soviet citizens.
The town's name means iron-water-place, as the mineral waters springing from the earth in Zheleznovodsk were considered to have high iron content.
Zheleznovodsk, along with Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Yessentuki, and Mineralnye Vody, is a part of the Caucasus Mineral Waters, a famous Russian spa resort. The town economy rotates around sanatoria, where dozens of thousands of people from all over Russia and former Soviet republics come year-round to rest and prevent and treat stomach, kidney, and liver diseases.
Judging by the abandoned houses on the outskirts of the city, the population of Zheleznovodsk in the past was much higher. Nevertheless, the central part of the town is well-groomed. I was surprised at the considerable number of tourists in the city for December.
I visited the city's mineral water springs, walked along the terrenkur and the town's streets.

Kislovodsk is a spa city in Stavropol Krai, Russia, in the North Caucasus region of Russia which is located between the Black and Caspian Seas.
This pleasant spa town has been a popular destination for Russian holidaymakers since the early 19th century when the Romantic writers Mikhail Lermontov and Alexander Pushkin spent time in its verdant parks and rugged countryside.
The name means ‘Sour Waters’, but Kislovodsk has a decidedly sweet vibe. Despite the many tourists and sanatoriums scattered about, Kislovodsk remains relaxing to the core. The landscape is green, the many gardens well-manicured, and the air, at nearly 1km above sea level, is crisp.

The Caucasian Mineral Waters is a group of spa resorts protected by government ecological region in the Russian Federation. It includes the towns of Pyatigorsk, Zheleznovodsk, Yessentuki, Kislovodsk, Kumagorsk (Mineral Waters), and resort location of Naguta.
Beshtau is an isolated five-domed igneous mountain near Pyatigorsk in the Northern Caucasus. Its height is 1402 m. The slopes are forested with ash, oak, hornbeam, and beech, and the summit is treeless. Beshtau used to have uranium mines, which were closed in 1975
