Places to see in ( Yeovil - UK )

Yeovil is a town and civil parish in south Somerset, England. The town of Yeovil lies within the local district of South Somerset and the Yeovil parliamentary constituency, situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, 130 miles (210 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton.

In the 20th century it developed into a centre of the aircraft and defence industries, which made it a target for bombing in the Second World War, with one of the largest employers being Westland Aircraft. Additionally, the Fleet Air Arm has a station RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron), the primary base of the Royal Navy's Westland Wildcat and Westland EH101 helicopters, several miles north of the town and is a major local employer (Ministry of Defence). Several other manufacturing and retail companies also have bases in the town. Plans have been proposed for various regeneration projects in the town.

Yeovil Country Park, which includes Ninesprings, is one of several open spaces in the town. There are a range of educational, cultural and sporting facilities. Religious sites include the 14th-century Church of St John the Baptist. It is on the A30 and A37 roads and has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. There is also a small railway museum.

Yeovil is situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, close to the border with Dorset, 130 miles (209 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton. It lies in the centre of the Yeovil Scarplands, a major natural region of England. The suburbs include: Summerlands, Hollands, Houndstone, Preston Plucknett, Penn Mill, New Town, Hendford, Old Town, Forest Hill, Abbey Manor, Great Lyde. Outlying villages include East Coker, West Coker, Hardington, Evershot, Halstock, Stoford, Barwick, Sutton Bingham, Mudford and Yetminster. Other nearby villages include Bradford Abbas, Thornford Corscombe, Montacute (where one will find Montacute House), and Pendomer. The village of Brympton, now almost a suburb of Yeovil, contains the medieval manor of Brympton d'Evercy. Tintinhull is also a village close to Yeovil featuring the National Trust owned Tintinhull House and Gardens.

One of the symbols of Yeovil is Jack the Treacle Eater, a folly consisting of a small archway topped by a turret with a statue on top. This is actually located in the village of Barwick, just to the south of the town. The hamstone Abbey Farm House was built around 1420 by John Stourton II, known as Jenkyn, and the associated Abbey Barn dates from the same period.

Hendford Manor in the centre of the town was built around 1720 and has since been converted into offices. It is a Grade II* listed building. Newton Surmaville is a small park and house which is also known as Newton House. It was built between 1608 and 1612, for Robert Harbin, a Yeovil merchant. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.

Yeovil has two theatres; The Octagon, and The Swan, a ten-screen cinema and 18-lane ten-pin bowling alley. Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides local health services. The Yeovil Railway Centre is a small railway museum at Yeovil Junction. It was created in 1993 in response to British Rail's decision to remove the turntable from Yeovil Junction. Approximately 0.25 miles (400 m) of track along the Clifton Maybank spur is used for demonstration trains.

The town has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. Yeovil has bus services provided by First West of England, First Hampshire & Dorset, Nippy Bus, Nordcat , South West Coaches, Stagecoach South West and Damory Coaches along with coach services from National Express, Berry's Coaches and South West Tours.

Sherborne and Yeovil

Exploring the connections between these two towns and King Alfred the Great. Sherborne was possibly the most important place in Wessex, at least in the early part of King Alfred's life. I take a brief look at Yeovil as it is nearby and also has a connection to King Alfred. My book, King Alfred: A Man on the Move, is available through bookshops and Amazon at amazon.co.uk/dp/1916182003

10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Yeovil Somerset UK - 7th April 2023

Please share with your friends.

We regularly visit Yeovil and it is always interesting to see the changes, or sometimes, the lack of changes.
The town centre seems to be undergoing constant redevelopment that never ends. Have a look and see what you think.
With that aside there are plenty of shops to be of interest and even some market stalls that were set up.
Lunch was at the Manor, a regular place for us, but on this occasion we had to wait a long time for our meal. The price seemed good and the front of house staff were very attentive. The problem seemed to be in the kitchen.
Hopefully, we caught them on a bad day and the service will return to their usual standard.

Thanks for watching.

Yeovil, Somerset - Ninesprings

Ninesprings is a country park situated in the South East of Yeovil, Somerset, the United Kingdom. It is the largest country park in South Somerset, spanning over 20 acres (8.1 ha).

The site lies on Yeovil Sands (a yellow micaceous sand) of the Upper Lias, in the Lower Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era, formed some 160 million years ago and includes several springs supplying small streams and ponds. It is believed to have been developed as an ornamental park, for the Aldon Estate, in the early nineteenth century and now forms a broad-leaved woodland with coniferous trees forming less than 10% of the total. The nationally rare Water Vole has been seen amongst the swans and other fauna at the site.

In 2007 £10,000 was received from the Big Lottery Fund's Breathing Places grant programme to enhance the environment and organise activities in the park. New Zealand artist Selwyn Price was commissioned by the local council to produce eight sculptures of Māori gods, which were placed between the carpark and the footpath at Ninesprings.

The main path of the walk, often referred to by locals as 'the yellow brick road', runs from BM Stores and the caravan park all the way to Pen Mill railway station on the other side of town. It follows the track bed of the former Great Western Railway route between Pen Mill and Yeovil Town railway station Notable landmarks along this path are Goldenstones leisure centre, the Ninesprings playground, the ski lodge, and Bowlplex/Cineworld.

Hills viewable from this walk include Tilly's Hill, Summerhouse Hill and Wyndham Hill.

YEOVIL, Somerset, United Kingdom, PART 1 UNCUT

Yeovil Country Park - Video Tour 2022

Yeovil Country Park is situated on the outskirts of Yeovil. Scenic park with footpaths to various landscapes and small waterfalls. Ample parking, dog friendly and it also has a cafe.

Yeovil Somerset short walk about

Lovely place in Somerset super shops amazing church and apologies the pavements were mega slippery at times nearly fell over. So the footage is at times a bit shakey please excuse this and thanks very much for watching.
Driving in was interesting and would have been better to have had a pair of skis rather than trainers.

Yeovil, Somerset - Wyndham Hill

Wyndham Hill, now bordered on three sides by concrete, development and car parks, lies on the immediate southern edge of the town with the River Yeo and Dodham Brook to its south. It always offers a quiet place to relax as more people tend to visit nearby Summerhouse Hill with its spectacular views.

Like Summerhouse Hill, Wyndham Hill was originally part of the Newton Surmaville estate. The lower, western area is known as Wyndham Field, while the summit of the hill has been known as Pen Hill, Kingston Penn, Windmill Hill and Victoria Hill. It only got its present name in the 1890s and was named as such for the first time in the 1891 census. Crowned by its four lime trees, the summit of the hill is recogniseable from many parts of Yeovil. The lime trees were planted to celebrate Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee in 1862, although contemporary photographs show that 25 trees were planted at the time.

Yeovil town centre - 13th July 2022

A lot of work seemed to be going on in Yeovil, but a lot needs to be done to bring back businesses to the town centre.

According to Somerset Live

The massive number of empty shops in Yeovil town centre

A walk through Yeovil town centre reveals a huge number of empty shops. A combination of growing online shopping trends, government-enforced coronavirus restrictions and lockdowns, and high business rates has led to the demise of many once-popular stores.

Prominent retail sites where the likes of GAME, Peacocks, Poundland, British Heart Foundation, Argos and Animal once traded are all now empty. And that's not to mention the two gaping high street holes where the well-loved Beales department stores once served loyal customers.

The Glovers Walk shopping precinct, in particular, currently hosts just one store, with ten empty retail spaces. But how many empty shops are there in total across the town centre?

Thanks for watching.

Quedam Centre, Yeovil, Somerset | Andy Wright UK Travel | Markets, Malls & Marts

In this episode of Markets, Malls and Marts Travel Blog I visit Yeovil's Quedam Centre in the heart of this Somerset town. It was first developed in the early 1980s and opened in 1984 following the demolition of parts of the center around Vicarage Street.

It is not a traditional mall, undercover, but resembles a secluded pedestrianized shopping street - there is one of those adjacent and running parallels to it.
