The Temples of Lakkundi movie
Lakkundi is in Gadag district, Karnataka, India. It is about 11 km from Gadag city. In Lakkundi there are more than 50 temples, 101 step wells and 29 inscriptions built in the period of Chalukyas. Some of the most important temples here are Mallikarjuna, Virabhadra, Manikeshwara, Nanneshwara, Lakshminarayana, Someshwara, Nilakanteshwara, Halagunda Basavanna, Neelakanteshwara , Suryanarayana, Kashivishveshwara, Virupaksha, and a Jain temple Brahma Jinalaya Temple. Among all of these temples KashiVishveshwara Temple is more finely and beautifully carved. The temple structures of all these temple are perfectly carved and these are the master pieces of Chalukyas

The Mahadeva Temple is located in the town of Itagi in Yelburga Taluk, in the Koppal District , was built based on the general plan of the Amruteshwara Temple at Annigeri (used as the prototype).
The Mahadeva Temple at Itagi was built circa 1112 CE by Mahadeva, a commander (dandanayaka) in the army of the Western Chalukya King Vikramaditya VI. The well-executed sculptures, finely crafted carvings on walls, pillars and the tower make it a good example of complete Western Chalukyan art which speaks volumes about the taste of the Chalukyan artisans. An inscription dated 1112 CE in the temple calls it Emperor among Temples (Devalaya Chakravarti).
The temple plan consists of a shrine (cella) which is connected to a closed mantapa (hall) by a vestibule (antechamber). The closed mantapa leads to an open pillared mantapa, with the temple as a whole facing the east. Some parts of the temple, such as the cornice and parapet over the outer edge of the roof of the open mantapa are missing. The main temple, the sanctum of which has a linga (symbol of Shiva), is surrounded by thirteen minor shrines, each with its own linga. The temple has two other shrines, dedicated to Murthinarayana and Chandraleshwari, parents of Mahadeva, the Chalukya commander who consecrated the temple.
The closed mantapa has a doorway on each side, with the eastern doorway leading to the open mantapa and the western doorway to the sanctum. The door panels are well wrought and the ceiling of the porches have a ribbed design in them. The decoration of the outer walls follows the same pattern as that of the shrine. The great open mantapa has 64 pillars, 24 of which are full pillars which start from the floor and support the main ceiling. The remaining are half pillars (or dwarf pillars) which start from the bench (parapet wall) that surrounds the mantapa and support the sloping eaves.

We left very very early from Bangalore. It is the best time to avoid city traffic. #nelamangala is the first of 18 toll plazas that you have to cross on your way to Mumbai (it is 18 if you travel upto Mumbai City) costing nearly 2k in total.
We took the NH48-Tumkur highway and reached at Tumkur ( 63 kms from Blr) by 4am and covered Chitradurga by 7am (137 kms from Tumkur) .NH48 is so good that we could make it in 2hrs 30 mts, via Sira, Hiriyur
Windmills welcome you as you reach Chitradurga. The town is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with windmills on them. A very differently wonderful sight compared to other Karnataka towns.
through Davangere, we continued on NH48 to reach Haveri (131kms from Chitra).
The worst stretch in this highway is from Chitradurga to Haveri.
Roads are in a real bad condition, and work on the 4-laning is progressing slowly (dead in some places!) You end up driving zig-zag all the way
The 30km Dharwad bypass single carriageway (with no lane divider) is hell lot of difficult to cover. Impatience and the need to overtake despite several warning boards not to, are a hazard in an otherwise unbelievable stretch from Bangalore to Belgavi.
The road from Belgaum to Kolhapur is awesome! 4-Laning is complete, and is concretized in many sections! The road was pretty empty, and was twisty-curvy!
The traffic on the road increased as were neared Karad. There was pretty heavy traffic as we crossed Satara. Khambatki Ghat is one interesting section where the down traffic goes through a tunnel, while the UP traffic needs to climb up and down a ghat!
This ghat section of about 8 kilometers is separately tolled! The traffic could be attributed to the fact that the section is shared by the traffic coming from the popular hill station at Mahabaleshwar!
The Mumbai-Pune expressway is a real delight to drive.
This is the shortest, fastest and the best route to travel between Bangalore to Mumbai with no road closure in between. 981 KM done, in 15 hours
It took around one and half tank of fuel to reach Mumbai, ours is a petrol still car good on mileage. Total fuel cost was around Rs./-5,500
But yes, we had freedom to stop anywhere, take pics, enjoy the natural scenery on the way? We really enjoyed this road trip.

Itagi Mahadeva Temple
Itagi is a small village within the Yelburga Taluk in the Koppal District of Karnataka. It is located around 26 km from Koppal town and 46 km from Gadag.
The Mahadeva temple in Itagi is one of the show-pieces of Chalukyan architecture.
The complex has many monuments, the main structure in the middle being the Mahadeva temple, surrounded by many small shrines, a stepped tank, a matha (hindu monastery) and a shala (school).
There is an inscription slab dated to 1112 AD in one of the temples in the complex. It records that Mahadeva, a commander in the army of the Western Chalukya King Vikramaditya VI (ruled 1076 – 1126 AD) built this complex in his home-town Ittagi.

Mahadeva Temple | Itagi | ????????
The Mahadeva Temple is located in the town of Itagi in Yelburga Taluk, in the Koppal District of Karnataka state, India. It is about 7 km from Kuknur and 20 km from Lakkundi. Mahadeva Temple (Itagi) built in 1112 CE. Soapstone was found in abundance in this regions.The first temple to be built from this material was the Amrtesvara Temple in Annigeri in the Dharwad district in 1050 CE. This building was to be the prototype for later, more articulated structures such as the Mahadeva Temple at Itagi.
