Places to see in ( Guiseley - UK )

Guiseley is a small town in the City of Leeds metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is situated south of Otley and Menston, is now a suburb of north west Leeds. At the 2001 census, Guiseley together with Rawdon had a population of over 21,000, increasing to 22,347 at the 2011 Census. The A65, which passes through the town, is the main shopping street. Guiseley railway station has regular train services into Leeds, Bradford and Ilkley on the Wharfedale Line. Guiseley is also served by the stations of Menston to the north and Baildon to the south.

Guiseley was an ancient parish in the West Riding of Yorkshire from the 12th century. The parish also included the townships of Carlton, Horsforth, Rawdon and Yeadon, all of which became separate civil parishes in 1866. In 1937 the civil parish of Guiseley was abolished and merged into the new Aireborough Urban District. In 1974 Aireborough was itself abolished and absorbed into the City of Leeds Metropolitan District in the new county of West Yorkshire.

Guiseley's church, dedicated to St Oswald, was the centre of a large parish that included many surrounding villages. It was used by generations of the Longfellow family. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 5th great-grandfather left here for the New World in the 17th century. The rector of St Oswald's for several decades was Rev. Robert More (died in 1642), the father-in-law of the English explorer, Captain Christopher Levett.

Guiseley has two retail parks: Guiseley Retail Park in the centre of town, and Westside Retail Park between Guiseley and Yeadon. The town has a Morrisons supermarket, charity shops and beauty stores on the High Street, as well as many pubs, bars, takeaways and restaurants located around the town and a leisure centre with swimming pool and gym on The Green.

Many of the retail outlets in the town have been established on the converted sites of old factories or mills. Recently, an increasing number of stores of well known leading brands such as Argos, TK Maxx, Marks & Spencer (food), Asda Living, Currys, Costa Coffee, Next and Sports Direct have been opened in the area. McDonald's, KFC and Subway all have stores in the town. Poundworld have also recently opened a store in the Westside Retail Park.

Places to see in ( Leeds - UK )

Leeds is a city in the northern English county of Yorkshire. On the south bank of the River Aire, the Royal Armouries houses the national collection of arms and artillery. Across the river, the redeveloped industrial area around Call Lane is famed for bars and live music venues under converted railway arches. Leeds Kirkgate Market features hundreds of indoor and outdoor stalls.

Leeds is a local government district of West Yorkshire, England, governed by Leeds City Council, with the status of a city and metropolitan borough. The metropolitan district includes the administrative centre Leeds and the ten towns of Farsley, Garforth, Guiseley, Horsforth, Morley, Otley, Pudsey, Rothwell, Wetherby and Yeadon.

The current city boundaries were set on 1 April 1974 by the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, as part a reform of local government in England. The city is a merger of eleven former local government districts; the unitary City and County Borough of Leeds combined with the municipal boroughs of Morley and Pudsey, the urban districts of Aireborough, Garforth, Horsforth, Otley and Rothwell, and parts of the rural districts of Tadcaster, Wharfedale and Wetherby from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

For its first 12 years the city had a two-tier system of local government; Leeds City Council shared power with the West Yorkshire County Council. Since the Local Government Act 1985 Leeds City Council has effectively been a unitary authority, serving as the sole executive, deliberative and legislative body responsible for local policy, setting council tax, and allocating budget in the city, and is a member of the Leeds City Region Partnership. Thc City of Leeds is divided into 31 civil parishes and a single unparished area.

Places to see in ( Ilkley - UK )

Places to see in ( Ilkley - UK )

Ilkley is a spa town and civil parish in West Yorkshire, in Northern England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Ilkley civil parish includes the adjacent village of Ben Rhydding and is a ward within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford. Approximately 12 miles (19 km) north of Bradford and 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Leeds, the town lies mainly on the south bank of the River Wharfe in Wharfedale, one of the Yorkshire Dales.

Ilkley's spa town heritage and surrounding countryside make tourism an important local industry. The town centre is characterised by Victorian architecture, wide streets and floral displays. Ilkley Moor, to the south of the town, is the subject of a folk song, often described as the unofficial anthem of Yorkshire, On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at. The song's words are written in Yorkshire dialect, its title translated as On Ilkley Moor without a hat.

Ilkley is within the travel-to-work radius of Leeds and Bradford. Leeds is 18 miles (29 km) away and Bradford 15.6 miles (25.1 km) by road, with a railway connection offering about 35 trains to each destination per day from Ilkley railway station. The railway, before the Beeching axe, also connected to Addingham, Bolton Abbey and Skipton to the west, and to Otley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, meeting the main Leeds to Harrogate line at Arthington.

Ilkley is a tourist destination and is used as a base from which to explore the famous moor and the countryside beyond. Ilkley is a shopping town that sells everything from game, fine wine, expensive fashions and fine art. The Victorian parades of the Grove and Brook Street have a selection of speciality shops. The town's original Victorian arcade has been restored as an indoor shopping walkway complete with a fountain and hanging baskets. Bettys, the Yorkshire tea room, has a shop in the town.

Ilkley lies on the A65 road, which runs between Leeds and Kendal. The nearest substantial motorways are the M62 at Bradford, and the M1 at Leeds, and the A1(M) at Wetherby. The civil parish is served by two railway stations: Ilkley terminus and Ben Rhydding. These are linked by the Wharfedale Line upon which trains run between Ilkley and Leeds/Bradford Forster Square stations.

Ilkley town centre is a tourist attraction with a high number of small independent shops. Of particular note is Lishman's of Ilkley, an award-winning butcher shop whose owner, David Lishman, became one of Rick Stein's superheroes in 2003. Ilkley is one of five towns to feature a Bettys tearoom and is home to the Michelin-starred Box Tree restaurant

Ilkley Toy Museum has a collection of toys dating from 350 BC and a collection of English wooden dolls. Ilkley is home to the largest and oldest literary festival in the North of England, the Ilkley Literature Festival.

RAWDON: Leeds Parish #34 of 38

LEEDS PARISH #34: RAWDON

Welcome to Rawdon, right on the Western boundary of the city of Leeds where it meets with neighbouring Bradford.

Rawdon is the newest civil parish in Leeds. It existed as one from 1866 until 1937, when it was merged into Horsforth, but it became one again in 2012

The land here has changed hands a few times over the centuries. One of its owners was Francis Layton, a great nephew of Richard Layton, who was a Dean of York

In 1718 the Layton estate which included all of Yeadon and parts of Horsforth, was split up. Rawdon landed in the hands of the Emmott family – a name carried by a local pub

Colonel Charles Payne Barras, who was an agent of the family in the 1860s, would found a brick and tile works in Yeadon using Rawdon’s most abundant local resource – clay

Perhaps a reference to that can be seen in its name. Rawdon comes from the Old Norse word “rauðr” which means “red”, and the Old English “dūn” which means hill – and there’s a few here

Rawdon is perhaps best known industrially though for the manufacture and dyeing of cloth, as there was a textile mill at the foot of its most prominent hill

There’s no way I could cover all of this one but I had a really good go!

These include Ryanair Boeing 737 EI-EMA, Titan Airways Boeing 737 G-ZAPW, Jet2 Boeing 757 G-LSAM, Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A310 AP-BEQ, Jet2 Boeing 737 G-CELV. After this the video goes to the end of the runway, where footage from Cemetery Road includes the runway approach lights and a Jet2 Holidays Boeing 737 flying overhead. Footage then is of the surrounding farmland facing the runway, and then of more aircraft movements taken from Warren House Lane including Jet2 Holidays Boeing 757 G-LSAD, Ryanair EI-EMA and a landing Flybe de Havilland Canada DHC-8-400Q Dash 8 G-JECO. Some of the local countryside and developed land including Carlton Beck and the waterfall are then filmed from the footbridge adjacent to the A658 Harrogate Road as is the Titan Airways G-ZAPW. After this the ancient marker stone on the roundabout is filmed before views through the foot / bike path which runs under the airport runway. From the other side of the runway aircraft movements are filmed including Jet2 Boeing 737 G-CELV, FlyBe Dash 8 G-JECO and Ryanair Boeing 737 EI-DPZ. The video ends at the Multiflight viewing area with a view across the airport to the airport buildings and parked aircraft. This video contains the locations of two Geocaches and one spoiler for the sharp-eyed.
