YANAGAWA, JAPAN - Welcome to Yanagawa, located on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. Today is an extra cold day, snowing and so instead of driving we decided to take the train to get to Yanagawa - from Fukuoka it took about an hour.
Yanagawa is a very pleasant town, located along the beautiful Japanese coast, and home to plenty of fresh seafood and something they are most famous for; unagi, or eel. When it comes to Japanese food, Yanagawa is one of the capitals of eel! But first, we took a traditional boat ride through the canal system to enjoy the peace and natural beauty of the town.
Eel restaurant 1: Saraya Fukuryu:
While on the boat ride, I could smell the smoky aroma of eels being grilled and it was almost unbearable, so we decided to try our first eel - and this was a recommendation from our boat captain. The eel was delicious and fresh, caramelized with a sweet soy sauce glaze, and served over rice in a wooden lacquer box. It was my first taste of Yanagawa eel… but more and better coming up!
Total price - 8,150 JPY ($63.48 USD) for 2 boxes
Alien Fish Seafood Shop:
Next up we went to a legendary seafood restaurant, more like a seafood market with a restaurant in the back. They had a nice catch, but one of their specialties is alien fish - literally alien fish - something otherworldly which they catch right off the coast of Yanagawa. They recommended some as sashimi and some deep fried. I also tried a number of other dishes, all of which were as fresh as possible and delicious.
Total price - 8,800 JPY ($68.54 USD) for everything
Main eel restaurant: Ganso Motoyoshiya:
Finally we made it to our main reservation for the main meal of the day and the most highly regarded and renowned Japanese eel restaurant in Yanagawa; Ganso Motoyoshiya. They’ve literally been serving their eel recipe since 1681. I was extremely lucky to have a chance to enter the kitchen to see just how they grill the eels to perfection, dip them into the sauce, grill again, and then place them over rice in a wooden box before steaming it altogether. This style of serving unagi / eel, which is called Unagi no Seiromushi, is unique to Yanagawa and one of the signatures of Ganso Motoyoshiya. I went all out and ordering the biggest set includes 3 types of eel. It was outstanding!
Total price - 21,700 JPY ($157.94 USD), but my set cost 8,200 JPY ($59.71 USD)
Yanagawa is a fantastic town to visit on a day trip from Fukuoka to enjoy the peace of the canals and especially the delicious Yanagawa eels, and quick alien fish sashimi!

Yanagawa, Great Day Trip From Fukuoka ???? Canal & ???? Eel
We visited Yanagawa in Fukuoka Prefecture. It's known as the city of water and the Venice of Kyushu. It's about an hour's train ride from Fukuoka City.
Yanagawa was once a castle town. The scenic destination is popular for boat rides on the canals. It's also famous for its local cuisine, steamed eel. It's a great day trip from Fukuoka City.

【Japan travel】How to enjoy Fukuoka; Dazaifu, Yanagawa, Hakata city (2023.08.17)
This time, I'll introduce you to Fukuoka.
Fukuoka offers a blend of urban vibes and natural beauty, along with a thriving food culture including its famous yatai (food stalls). Personally, I find Fukuoka to provide a more relaxed urban atmosphere compared to Tokyo or Osaka, making it a recommended destination for enjoying both city life and gourmet experiences.
I'll introduce you to places like Dazaifu Tenmangu, known as the god of learning, the scenic boat ride along Yanagawa's river, the commercial complex Canal City, and the lively atmosphere of the yatai food stalls. While I couldn't visit all the recommended spots this time due to time constraints, I've shared some that I believe you should definitely consider exploring. Feel free to use them as a reference.

Yanagawa is a perfect day trip from Fukuoka in Kyushu. We went there in the afternoon, after visiting Dazaifu in the morning. We got the Dazaifu and Yanagawa Sightseeing Ticket from Nishitestu railways, which includes the return trip by train and a punting trip in Yanagawa. There are various other packages too, including some that include a meal at an eel restaurant, which is a local specialty. It's a relaxing and beautiful place to visit!

Kyushu is Japan's third largest island, located southwest of the main island Honshu and is made up of seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima.
It's also one of my favourite regions in Japan and such an underrated and undiscovered region.
Here are some of my recommendations for first-time visitors! It's best to stay 2-3 days in each prefecture so you can take your time to explore!
I've included everything from nature spots, activities/experiences, Japanese food, to things to do at night in the list!
I had so much fun filming and exploring Kyushu - it really had everything I wanted all in one region!
Hot springs for when you want to relax, nature for when you want to escape the city, activities for all ages, and also delicious fresh food!
Hope you can check out some of these places the next time you visit Kyushu as well!

We Were AMAZED, Traveling to Japan's Countryside ???????? Yanagawa (Kyushu Island)
We were amazed traveling to Japan's countryside! We decided to do something a little different and rented a car from Fukuoka to drive to the small town of Yanagawa, also known as the Venice of Kyushu. We were surprised that not many tourists visit this romantic little town as there's a lot to offer! Join us as we explore the canal city of Yanagawa by boat and try a 150 year-old recipe for grilled eel.
