Why I want to go to YAMAGATA ????️⛩️ (Tohoku, Japan)

What's in Yamagata? Here's what there is to do there, around Sendai and this area of Tohoku in Japan, as well as where to stay and train passes that could save you money.

Yamagata prefecture's only a couple of hours away from Tokyo on the bullet train, so it'd be easy to spend a few days in Tokyo, then move north to Tohoku for a few days and see a different side of Japan, in the countryside and the mountains. Here's my wishlist of things I'd like to do there, including Yamadera, a temple in the mountains with a beautiful view, Ginzan Onsen, Mount Zao and its snow monsters, a wasabi farm, a sightseeing river cruise and local specialties: Yonezawa beef, cherries and soba noodles.

Autumn Day Trip to Popular Ginzan Onsen♨Hakama dress-up????

♨Ginzan Onsen is so popular (Especially during winter season) and because of that it may be difficult to get accommodations, but you can also enjoy it as a day trip! (just be sure to wake up early to catch the first shinkansen????)

????It seems that some Ryokan (Japanese-style inns) have started accepting day-use onsen again, which had been suspended for quite a while due to Covid19 restrictions.
(but many of them are closed on Thursdays).

????If you want to see the night lights of Ginzan Onsen, I recommend taking a cab on the way back (around ¥6,000 →$40 one-way fare).

????unfortunately the current schedule as of 2022, buses departing from Onsen in the evening or later will not be connected to the Shinkansen.

Here are some tips on how to enjoy Ginzan Onsen during the autumn season:
・A pleasant stroll in Shirogane park is highly recommended (beware of bears)
・Rent Hakama (traditional Japanese wear) and take loads of pictures at the retro onsen town

????Shinkansen and bus timetables are for 2022

For those who want more of a workout, it's a great starting place to hike to the other mountains in the Japan alps!

Stay tuned for part 2 where I share with you what you can do around the city and a hidden gem in Nagano!
