Places to see in ( Barnsley - UK )

Barnsley is a large town in South Yorkshire, England, located halfway between Leeds and Sheffield. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town centre lies on the west bank of the Dearne Valley.

Barnsley is surrounded by several smaller settlements which together form the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, of which Barnsley is the largest and its administrative centre. The town is accessed from junctions 36, 37 and 38 of the M1 motorway and has a railway station on the Hallam and Penistone Lines. Barnsley F.C. is the local football club.

Barnsley is a former industrial town centred on coal mining and glassmaking. Although both industries declined in the 20th century, Barnsley's culture is rooted in its industrial heritage and it has a tradition of brass bands, originally created as social clubs by its mining communities. It is also home of the Barnsley chop.

Divisions and suburbs of Barnsley are :

Ardsley, Athersley, Carlton, Cundy Cross, Gawber, Honeywell, Kendray, Kingstone, Lundwood, Monk Bretton, New Lodge, Oakwell, Old Town, Pogmoor, Smithies, Stairfoot, Worsbrough (includes Worsbrough Bridge, Worsbrough Common, Worsbrough Dale, Worsbrough Village and Ward Green), Wilthorpe, Dodworth, Mapplewell, Staincross, Royston, Wombwell, Hoyland, Elsecar, Kexbrough, Cudworth.

The main transport hub is Barnsley Interchange, a combined rail and busstation that was opened on Sunday 20 May 2007, and was the first project in the remaking Barnsley scheme to be completed. Stagecoach Yorkshire run most bus services within Barnsley, operating to and from Barnsley Interchange. Barnsley is also served by:

Dodworth railway station west of the town centre, which is a stop on the Penistone Line, and has one platform.
Darton railway station however, is on the Hallam Line, has two platforms and is in the north of Barnsley.
Goldthorpe railway station and has two platforms (east of Barnsley). The line is on the Wakefield Line and has no service to the above stations or Barnsley Interchange.
Thurnscoe railway station and has two platforms (east of Barnsley). The station is on the Wakefield Line and has no service to any Barnsley station other than Goldthorpe.
The nearest airport is Robin Hood Airport approximately 26 miles (42 km) away.

The WORST Place to Live in the UK? | BARNSLEY

Is this the worst place to live in the UK? In today's tour, we visit Barnsley. Barnsley was named one of the worst places to live in England in 2022. My intention isn't to offend anyone who is living in Barnsley, I wanted to see for myself why this town is considered to be one of the worst places to live in England and form my own opinion.

HIGH HOYLAND: Barnsley Parish #10 of 17

It seems like an age since I was last in a Barnsley parish but earlier this week I got back on the case out in the Western hills of South Yorkshire, aiming to put a big dent in the remaining eight parishes in the borough. These remaining ones are the hardest for me to access from my home so there's a lot of careful forethought and route planning going in to them.

By far the smallest of the ones that remain is today's offering, coming at you from the border with the Wakefield district of West Yorkshire. Sharing a border here is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park which straddles the line, and some of it falls within the parish boundaries here. Most of it lies in West Bretton, which you do get a really good view of from up in these hills.

In fact, that view defines this place. No matter where you stand in the village, even if it's up at the church, some way out of the main settlement, or at Longside Gallery with it's panoramic window view of the park below, you will always get something nice to look at.

Amenities are limited here, but there's a pub at least for the 128 residents and the visitors to this part of South Yorkshire to enjoy. There's a multitude of high value properties too, including the £1.2m hall, also known as Queen Anne House. The history surrounding the church is something fascinating too, a worthy visit to make if you're ever out this way.

The hills around here make sure you never forget the name of this parish. Welcome to HIGH HOYLAND.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the borough of Barnsley. There are 17. Here's the TENTH one - High Hoyland.

Places Tourist Might Miss on Their Visit to Margate, Kent, England?

The Lighter Side of Margate; usually when people think of Margate they think of a typical British town seaside resort and of Dreamland. Dreamland is still undergoing renovation, and there is little doubt that when it does reopen it’s going to be the major tourist attraction that in its heyday it once was.

We only made a flying visit to Margate so didn’t have the time to soak up the traditional side of such a place, although we did wander along the tourist town seaside resort pass all the restaurants, pubs and cafes looking for somewhere to have an evening meal; in the end settling on the Brewers Fayre restaurant close to the train station.

Tacked onto the end of our French holiday, and before finally making our way home, we made an overnight stop at Margate specifically to see the marvel of the Shell Grotto (made with 4.6 million sea shells); part of its fascination being who, why and when the grotto was built being a complete mystery to the experts.

We booked in at the Smiths Court Hotel, 21-27 Eastern Esplanade, Cliftonville; located just a short distance from the main sea front, in a quieter area of Margate but still with rooms with a sea view. The hotel was excellent, but what caught my attention was ‘The Blues Grill, at The Malvern Hotel just two doors up which had an unusual and fascinating frontage featuring the Blues Brothers.

The Shell Grotto, which we visited at 10:00 sharp the following morning, when it opened, was well worth the visit; such an unusual curiosity. Right opposite the Shell Grotto is R.G. Scott, Furniture Mart, the most fascinating reclamation yard we’ve ever seen; and consequently (after spending an hour there) we came away with a bell which we subsequently fitted to the outside of our conservatory and a grand 8 foot high Victorian style street lamp with three lamp holders wired for electrics; which we shall secure to the corner of our conservatory decking and get it wired into the mains and controlled from a switch in the conservatory itself.

The other place my wife specifically wanted to visit while we were in Margate was the famous ‘Cup Cake Café’; so before continuing our journey (after our visit to the Shell Grotto) we stopped there for a rest bite and took in the delights of their cupcakes washed down with a nice hot drink.

And finally, after leaving Margate and making our journey home to Bristol we made a pit stop at Pegwell Bay in Ramsgate, Kent, England (just a few miles from Margate) for the Viking ship that my son specifically wanted to see (The Hugin), a replica of a Viking longship built by Denmark in 1949 as a gift from the Danish government to Kent to mark the 1500th hundred year anniversary of when the Jutes settled in Kent as part of the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain in the 5th century.

So when visiting Margate there are more things to see than just sand, sea and tourists shops, amusement arcades and cafes and restaurants along the sea front.

Hotel Review: Premier Inn Barnsley Dearne Valley, Wombwell, South Yorkshire, England - August 2016

I stayed at the Premier Inn Barnsley Dearne Valley in August 2016, two of us stayed for one night, which cost £60 for room only, booked with booking.com. The hotel itself is not on any major public transport routes, so it is necessary to drive there or take a taxi. The hotel is located South of Wombwell, near the border with Brampton in the South East of Barnsley. This hotel is no good for Barnsley town centre, unless you want to drive there. It is around a 10 minute drive from Barnsley South / Sheffield North on the M1 (Junction 36), followed by a route along the Dearne Valley Parkway (A6195), which is interrupted by numerous annoying roundabouts.

The hotel offers free parking, and has a car park which holds approximately 150 cars. Upon entering the hotel, you go straight to reception. The receptionist was friendly and helpful, and check-in was quick.

We were allocated room 40, which was on the first floor at the back of the hotel. The room was fairly large with a good sized double bed (please note, double not King). There was also a second single bed, which had been set out like a chaise lounge. The room had a desk, open style wardrobe, tea and coffee making facilities, and some drawers. There was no air conditioning, but there was a fan. The room was quite warm and stuffy.

Frustratingly, there were no plug sockets next to the bed, which annoyed me slightly, as this is a brand new hotel. WHY there weren't any is an oversight on Premier Inn's behalf, and shows that the people who design these rooms don't stop in enough hotels themselves.

The bathroom was fairly standard, it was a shower over a bath arrangement (unfortunately as is often the case). There was complimentary shower gel in the shower.

At night the room was very warm, so I opened the window, however there was noise from lorries at the retail park behind, which meant that the window had to be closed, and we had to endure an uncomfortably warm night in the hotel. Again this is an oversight on behalf of Premier Inn, the room should have had air conditioning.

The hotel is built next to a Brewer's Fayre pub, which like Premier Inn is owned by parent company Whitbread. The pub serves as the hotel's bar and restaurant. We had dinner there off of the menu, but found the prices expensive and the portions small, in other words they were not good value for money dishes. There was an evening buffet option, which I'm sure must have represented better value for money. One thing that was annoying was the amount of flies in the pub, they really do need to invest in an electronic fly zapper.

Breakfast was served buffet style, continental was £6.99 and full hot breakfast was £8.99. Both options included unlimited drinks.

The quality of the food was excellent, particularly the bacon and sausages, but once again the fly problem was evident, and I saw flies crawling on the cold items of the buffet, which put me completely off of them. All items on the buffet should have hygienic covers over them.

After going out for the evening, we arrived back at the hotel for 11:30pm on Saturday night to find the bar had 'closed'. This was quite disappointing for a hotel. We did notice some of the regulars enjoying a drink 'after hours', which was a little galling to use as hotel guests who had to go to bed with a cup of tea in the bedroom.

In summary, this hotel served it's purpose, it wasn't perfect, but overall I enjoyed my stay there. I would possibly consider staying there again, but not for definite.

Hotel Review: Ramada by Wyndham, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England - October 2021

Hotel Review: Ramada by Wyndham, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England - October 2021 -

I stayed at the Ramada by Wyndham in October 2021 for one night. I'll be honest from the beginning here, i didn't like the hotel very much. Whilst the staff were very nice, the hotel felt a bit soulless and the bedroom felt more like a room in a hostel than a Ramada hotel. It was just very basic and not worth the £84 that we had paid for it, nevermind.

The room had a nice view, but I just wasn't enamoured with this place.

The film features exterior views of the hotel, a room inspection of 424 and the lift / elevator.

Hotel Review: B&B Hotel, Paderborn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany - March 2019

Hotel Review: B&B Hotel, Paderborn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany - March 2019.

I've just uploaded a new film to my Hotel Reviews: Germany playlist, here: of a review of the B&B Hotel in Paderborn, Germany, which I recently stayed in for one night whilst working in Germany. The room cost 69 Euro on a room only basis.

The hotel is a new build, which is conveniently located for Paderborn's main railway station (Paderborn Hauptbahnhof) on Bahnhofstraße, about a 4 minute walk from the railway station entrance. It is also next to the bus station and a public car park. To walk from the hotel to the city centre takes around 10-15 minutes along Bahnhofstraße.

B&B Hotels are a no-frills budget brand aimed at the business traveller. The hotels are modern, clean and perfectly functional, but lack some facilities that you might expect, so instead of a bar, there is a drinks vending machine. Instead of a room key there is a keypad on the door. The hotel is also largely cashless and built over four floors (including the ground floor).

The rooms at the hotel are clean, modern and functional, aimed at those who are likely to only be staying for a day or two. The bed was a double, it was perfectly comfortable. There was an abundance of plug sockets, flat screen TV, bedside units, table and two stools. There was an open wardrobe and storage shelves. The room was also air-conditioned.

The bathroom had a shower cubicle, sink and toilet.

The room overlooked the railway line, there was some audible noise, but nothing that bothered me.

This was my first foray into B&B Hotels, and based upon this experience, I do not think that it will be my last.
